1 MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT SUPPORTS GRANT. REPORT ON IEEE COMSOC COLOMBIA MDSG EVENT IEEE COLCOM 2008 Date: September 25 and 26, 2008 Event: IEEE Colombian Communications Conference, COLCOM Place: Dann Monasterio Hotel, Popayan, Colombia No. of attendees: 220, of whom 45% were ComSoc members. Website: Background: The IEEE Colombian Communications Conference, COLCOM 2008, took place in Popayan, Colombia, from September 24 to 27. The IEEE COLCOM 2008 had the goal of stimulate, promote and spread the development of the management, technological, normative and regulatory knowledge in the areas of communications in Colombia. The technical program allowed the academic and industrial community to show their research advances; it also opened a space for the discussion about the impact of the communications in our community. Proceedings: The IEEE Colombian Communications Conference took place in Popayan, Colombia. There were, approximately, 220 attendees, from this number, 45% were members of the IEEE Communications Society. The Conference had six lectures, two from international experts, Ph. D. Subra Ganesan, DV from the IEEE Computer Society and Ph. D. Anna Scaglione, supported by the IEEE Communications Society. Four of the lectures were given by national lecturers, Ph.D. Ana Maria Cardenas Soto, Ph.D. Marco Aurelio Alzate, Ph.D. Cesar Collazos, Ph.D. Roberto Bustamante Miller and Eng. Luz Victoria Diaz Assessor of the Communication Ministers. They share their research experience and their vision about the telecommunications in the country and in the world. The Conference also had 36 paper presentations, selected from a call for papers that was attended by research groups, universities and industry, who presented their last year research results. In addition to the Conference, three short tutorial courses were given. Short course "CAN, LIN, FlexRay protocols for Military vehicle inside -communications and Automotive Collision Warning Systems and Military application", by Ph. D. Subra Ganesan, with 100 attendees; short course Human Computer Interfaces, by Ph.D. Cesar Collazos, with 120 attendees, and the short course Cooperative Networks and Growth of Wireless Infrastructures, by Ph.D. Anna Scaglione, with 80 attendees. All the tutorials are developmented in the Francisco Lemos Arboleda auditorium of the Universidad del Cauca.

2 According to the evaluation from the attendees, the Conference, had a high technical level and a high level of satisfaction in the areas of infrastructure, logistics and general organization.
