T he true story of Dr Johann Faust the alchem- ist is merely the seed that generated this tree of masterful fantasies. An artist does not copy he steals, then lets his imagination transform his work into a new, never-done-before reality This applies to all the masters mentioned but also to a few more who gallantly helped us to grow our own tree of dreams. H aydn s Mercurio, Mozart s Jupiter, Schubert s An die Sonne, Holst s Neptune, Kurt Weill s A Touch of Venus, Mahler s Lied von der Erde begin the festival in a concert planned as a leisurely walk between houses of light. Intermission The model Dr. Johann Georg Faust (c ), was a brilliant, disreputable astrologer/alchemist from Staufen in Breisgau. Accused of practising black magic, he was executed in 1540 to the bigoted satisfaction of his fellow-villagers and loving neighbours. A German chapbook about his sins translated into English in 1587 captured the undivided attention of Christopher Marlowe, resulting in his Doctor Faustus. It was a success. And as the mantle of lie wraps itself around any success, the Metamorphoses flowed forth. 22 The Celebration of Time Joseph Haydn ( ): Clockwork Music Zahharenkova In 1780 a rather interesting character appeared in Prince Esterhazy s famous orchestra, a priest named Primitivus Niemecz. Besides playing the cello, being the new court librarian, a scholar and writer, he also played keyboards and did music-machine maintenance. In no time at all, his music boxes and clockwork organ caught the attention of Haydn, who thereupon wrote 32 pieces for the clockwork organ. And Niemecz made three exquisite machines to Haydn s specifications. Intermission The Abolition of Time Ludwig van Beethoven ( ): 33 Variations on a Waltz by Anton Diabelli in C, Op. 120 for Piano Sigfridsson Useless to play advocates to Beethoven. But we might just mention one of the endless revolutions brought (un)willingly into the world of sound by the Bonn maestro. The honour of being neglected in those variations goes entirely to Diabelli. The practical indifference to the musical material and microstructure, the Lisztian introduction in the first movement and the gradual abolition of time in the variations made the road to the Lied von der Erde not long any more. Like all modern music, it leaves us with an unanswered question: Is it a step forward or a step towards autodestruction? There is, after all, an answer It is an unavoidable masterpiece.
