3 MEET BCBA S AMAZING STAFF CHRISTINE HYLBERT and LAURA ZANG The Boulder County Bar Association is so fortunate to have an unbelievably talented, creative, and hard-working staff to oversee the operations of the Bar Association. Christine Hylbert has been the Executive Director for nearly 19 years. I have heard from more than one BCBA President that they would not have opted to be Bar President if Christine wasn t serving as E.D. She not only keeps things on track but she is constantly developing innovative ideas to keep the Bar Association relevant for its members. Laura Zang is the Assistant E.D. and after only one year she has quickly become an indispensable part of the organization. Simply put, BCBA just couldn t begin to do all that it does without these amazing PRESIDENTS PAGE BY STAR WARING and classy ladies. So, even for those of you who may know them, I think you will enjoy learning a bit about their interesting backgrounds and talents. Christine grew up in Northbrook, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, where her father was an executive for the Culligan Corporation. She had three brothers so she had to be tough in order to hold her own as the only girl in the family. Christine participated in team sports throughout school which explains why she is such a great team player. Her family moved to Brussels, Belgium after she finished high school and she attended the Sorbonne in Paris where she studied music, piano, traveling and partying (her words). She still speaks French almost fluently. Christine came to Colorado to study at Colorado Women s College. She also studied at Northwestern and the University of Denver. She graduated with a degree in Political Science and Education and taught school in a program for gifted and talented children in Denver. Later on, Christine worked at the Colorado and Denver Bar Association for 11 years and headed up the Public Education Department. BCBA was very fortunate to hire her as the E.D. I asked Christine what she likes about her job at BCBA and this is how she responded: I really love working with lawyers. Most of all, I love my job because of the diversity and the many hats I get to wear. I learn something new each week. I am out in the community to enhance legal education and make sure that the legal profession is respected. An important aspect of my job is to provide opportunities for the bar members t to provide legal services and education. I am very proud of the Boulder bar members and their community eforts. I hope that our members appreciate the educational and networking opportunities our sections coordinate for their benefit. We have many excellent programs throughout the month at a very reasonable price. This year s Bench Bar Retreat was the best ever and I want to thank the judges for their continued support of the practicing bar. Our annual Judges Dinner is a wonderful fun event to honor our fantastic judicial officers. The Food Wine Jazz Art, which will be on Feb. 19th this year, is in the 14th year and it is all about wine tasting and raising money for The Legal Aid Foundation of Colorado. I love this event because it often attracts a group of lawyers who are not always active in BCBA. Maybe it s the great wine from The Wine Merchant along with the food and art. It is always fun for me to be with our members and share great collegiality. One of my goals this year is to improve our outreach to the younger lawyers to encourage more of them to take part in our CLE programs and events. 3 (continued on the next page

4 PRESIDENTS PAGE (continued from page 5) Here are a few things you may not know about Christine: She is married to Peter Dietze of Dietze and Davis. She participated in Ride the Rockies the first four years it started; she has played piano for many years, she played a twelve string guitar in high school and college and a banjo in a jug band. Christine has two grown children, Tyler (a tax attorney) and Tracy (a PhD in Immunology).. She has three grandchildren who are very lucky to have such a fun and charismatic grandmother. Laura applied to be Christine s assistant because she was looking for a job that would give her more time to spend with her family. She also wanted to be in an interesting and challenging environment and she hit it off with Christine when she interviewed for the job. She feels that she has the best of both worlds because her job allows her time to be with her kids and a great group of lawyers to be associated with. She says that she has been able to achieve that rare balance of career fulfillment and quality of life though her work with BCBA. Laura believes that the most important thing that BCBA offers its members is the opportunity to network and to attend live CLE s at a reasonable price. As she noted, the face-to-face contact is what makes BCBA such and active and involved group. Her favorite BCBA events are the happy hours for the members. Laura has two daughters of her own and her fiancée has three daughters. The girls are all within a few years in age and enjoy spending time together. Her family loves to go camping in the Colorado mountains in the summer. Laura and her fiancée are building a new house in Longmont and they are planning a wedding on the beach in Hawaii in April. If you haven t had the good fortune to meet Christine and Laura, I encourage you to stop by the BCBA office on the second floor of 1942 Broadway (Broadway Suites building) to say hello. They would love to meet you in person and I can guarantee that you will enjoy getting to know them. Laura has lived in all four time zones: She originally hails from Peoria, Illinois. She moved to Salt Lake City when she was eight, to Philadelphia when she was 15 and then to Portland, Oregon when she was 21. She came to Colorado when she was 30. Laura has a B.A. in Journalism from Portland State University. She has worked as a physical therapy assistant for the clinic that did rehab for the Reading Phillies. She worked for the sports section of an Oregon paper taking high school scores. She was a veterinary technician for the original Banfield pet hospital that all the Petsmarts are based on. She also worked in Real Estate finding rentals. Her favorite jobs (besides the Boulder County Bar Association, of course!) were in event planning for both restaurants and corporations.
