1 A45720 DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: On or before April 5th 2015 RESPIRATORY THERAPY PROGRAM INFORMATION FOR FALL 2015 The admissions process for the Respiratory Therapy Program is as follows: 1. If not currently enrolled at CPCC, go to the Student Success Center in the Central High Building, and complete an application to the college or submit an online application. Designate Respiratory Therapy as the program of interest. If you are a current student see Admissions to change your program of study. 2. Meet with a college counselor. 3. Request an official copy of your high school and college transcripts be sent to CPCC Student Records, PO Box 35009, Charlotte, NC Transcripts are processed in the order of which they are received. Please allow up to four weeks for processing. You will be notified to your CPCC student when the evaluation is completed. 4. All applicants must take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Version V at a cost of $ If you have not had the required English and Math courses you must also take the English and Algebra tests. Schedule and take placement tests in Central High Admission into the Respiratory Therapy program is competitive and is determined by the TEAS results (pg.5). 7. Submit a completed Respiratory Therapy Program application and related documentation on or before April 5th, Acceptance letters are sent out after May 10 st, 2015 The application and all related documentation should be turned into the locked drop-box in the mailroom BL 3545 or office BL PLEASE NOTE: In order to participate in clinical education experiences at health care facilities, students will be required to submit results of an annual NC state or national criminal background check and annual drug screen at their own expense. 1
2 Procedure for Taking TEAS Version V. The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS Test) was developed by Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) to predict the academic readiness of applicants prior to admission into a healthcare program. The TEAS is a four-part, web-based assessment that includes subtests in Reading, Mathematics, Science, and English language usage. There are 170 questions in total. The test can only be taken once every three months. Total testing time for all four test areas is 3 ½ hours. Scoring is automatic; you will receive your score when you have completed the test. Complete the permission slip for the TEAS Test seen below. Present the permission slip to the Central Campus Cashier s office in the Central High building and pay the testing fee there. The cost of the TEAS Test is $ A receipt is issued at the time of payment. Attach your payment receipt to the permission slip and take both with you to the testing center when ready to take the test. The TEAS Test is offered in the Central High Building, room 248, by online appointment, on Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. It is recommended that you complete some coursework prior to taking the TEAS. A study guide is available at Atitesting.com. Please note: No calculators or dictionaries are allowed during the TEAS test. Use of these will result in disqualification from the test. A copy of your TEAS test results MUST be attached to the application. Total adjusted scores from your test will be added up, then multiplied by 0.10 to calculate the TEAS Test Points Awarded. _ TESTING CENTER PERMISSION SLIP FOR TEST OF ESSENTIAL ACADEMIC SKILLS (TEAS) Version V. Please complete this form and take it to the testing center on Central Campus of Central Piedmont Community College, along with payment receipt, in order to be permitted to take the TEAS Test. 3 Essential Functions CENTRAL PIEDMONT COMMUNITY COLLEGE RESPIRATORY THERAPY TECHNOLOGY (A45720) The following are essential functions necessary for completion of the Respiratory Therapy Technology Program. They are provided here to help you assess the appropriateness of this career field for you. FUNCTIONS STANDARD EXAMPLES (not all inclusive) Physical Requirements Critical Thinking Communication Rapport Motor Skills and Manual Dexterity Environmental Exposures Hearing Intelligence Quantitative literacy Emotional Stability Vision Physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, respiratory and other medical equipment. Possess problem-solving and requisite judgment to function in the clinic setting. Must be able to communicate effectively with others through several means (written etc.) Possess interpersonal demeanor and decorum to interact successfully with patients, peers, professionals, family members and health care providers. Gross and fine motor abilities sufficient to provide safe and effective respiratory therapy treatment. Students may be exposed to infectious media and agents, toxins, medications and latex. This may prove a potential hazard to specific populations (pregnant, child-bearing age, adult exposure etc.) Auditory ability sufficient to monitor patient responses to treatment and safety/warning signals on equipment. Utilize reasoning ability to complete tasks in an accurate, timely and effective manner. Requires the ability to use formulas, percentages, ratios, indices, decimals, scales, fractions, the metric system, algebra and statistics. Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under high levels of stress. Visual ability sufficient to observe and measure as necessary, to provide quality care and to use sophisticated patient treatment equipment Must be able to lift and carry fifty pounds. Must be able to walk, run, stoop, and crouch for several hours. Must possess keen discriminatory vision and hearing. Using observational cause and effect, reasoned summation and logical conclusions to arrive at an appropriate patient plan of care. Ability to comprehend and generate documents and reports utilizing proper grammar, spelling, syntax, tone, voice and self-assuredness. Being congenial, convivial, non-confrontational and not self-defensively when presented by preceptors with instructions or constructive criticism. Use sophisticated equipment and patient manipulation; mechanical ventilators, oximeters, analyzers, metering devices, artificial airways, obtain blood or sputum. Student will be assigned to a patient(s) with wounds, lesions, fluid-discharges, radiation or pharmaceutical agents requiring appropriate PPE/radiation or isolation classification. Monitor alarms, noise levels, and critical care emergencies and devices. Use scientific and logical thought for problem solving and conceptualization of multivariate, intensive care problems. Must perform drug calculations, predicative norms, entrainment ratios, laboratory value interpretations and respiratory critical care arithmetic functions. May be confronted with an emergency and exposure to blood, deep cuts, severe burns, open wounds, amputated body parts, death, etc. Observe patient responses to treatment; correct cues for patient, assessment, observe nonverbal communication, and act appropriately. Visualize operation, calibration and equipment alarm settings. In addition to the physical capabilities required during the classroom and laboratory sessions, clinical training includes moving with or without reasonable accommodation between patient care areas, and meeting the mental and physical demands of twelve-hour shifts. 3

Otherwise, they should enroll in CHM 121 and 121A or arrange with Science Division Director to take the CLEP examination. Acceptance into the Respiratory Therapy program is contingent upon successful completion of the Chemistry requirement by the end of Fall Semester
