1 MALONE UNIVERSITY Department: Theology Undergraduate Assessed By: Larry Reinhart & Susanne Nicholson Assessment Period: Mission Statement* The mission of the Malone University Department of Theology is to provide practical theological education that transforms men and women into effective Christian leaders who bring glory to God. Program Goals 1. Students will understand the content and social/cultural contexts of Scripture. 2. Students will use correct hermeneutical principles to apply Scripture to Christian ministry. 3. Students will know two major figures and two key events/developments from three main periods of church history (early, medieval, modern) and explain their relevance to Christian ministry. 4. Students will know and be able to apply to ministry theological convictions in eight central areas of Christian doctrine (Scripture, God, Christ, Holy Spirit, humanity, salvation, church, eschatology). *NOTE: The Department of Theology revised its mission statement during this academic year; since program changes have not yet occurred to reflect this revised statement, this year s report is based upon the previous Mission Statement. 1 T heology - Undergraduate

2 Program Intended Learning Outcomes (PILO) 1. Understand the content and social/cultural contexts of Scripture in order to be able to apply it to current ministry contexts. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success Assessment Exam: Success would involve (for seniors): 10% passing with honors, 80% passing, and 10% or less failing. Summary of Data Collected 13 seniors completed the Bible Honors 2 = 15.4% Pass 10 = 76.9% Fail 1 = 7.7% Goal met: Honors plus Pass = 92.3% Use of Results This is the first year that grades for qualifying exams affected grades for the THEO 460 course overall. The result indicates that students took the exams more seriously and performed better as a result. Freshmen Pre-test Freshmen take a pre-test for Bible (which is the same as Senior Assessment Exam) 14 Freshmen completed the Bible Honors = 0 Pass = 2 Fail = 12 Comparison of improved scores demonstrated student progress from freshman to senior years. Senior Written Exit Reports and Interviews: Benchmarks for written Exit Reports Questions 2, 3, 11, 12 have a minimum of 70% Disagree/Strongly Disagree Questions 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, have a minimum of 70% Agree/Strongly Agree Written Exit Reports and Interviews revealed the following: 1. Benchmarks were met in almost every area (see #2 and #3 for areas for improvement); students generally had a very positive attitude about their education and professors in the Department of Theology. 2. Students expressed a desire for more practical ministry experience. 3. Some students are unsure of their future and need more direction in this area. 1. Results indicated that major restructuring is not necessary, but minor revisions may be helpful. 2. DOT faculty discussed incorporating assignments into Bible and Theology classes that have a practical component. 3. THEO 460 (Senior Seminar) has been approved to be offered every semester starting in the fall. The DOT discussed implementing a regular review of the grad school application process as part of THEO 460 and opening that discussion to all interested DOT students in order to assist their future planning. 2 T heology - Undergraduate

3 Internships: Supervisors used an evaluation form with a 5- point scale and defined rubric. Evaluation scores should average 3.0 or above. Evaluation Scale 1-5 Use of Results This is the first year that grades for qualifying exams affected grades for the THEO 460 course overall. The result indicates that students took the exams more seriously and performed better as a result. There were more honors students that last year and fewer failing exams (even though the number was still a bit high). This indicates that the revised method implemented in Church History class has been helpful. *** Comparison of improved scores demonstrated student progress from freshman to senior years. *** 1. ADDENDUM: The Department of Theology Program Review was completed in March As this review is more comprehensive than student learning assessment, the results have not been incorporated above. Nonetheless, the external reviewers made several recommendations that, when implemented, will impact student learning: Curriculum review is necessary to bring courses into alignment with the new mission statement; Potential new majors should be explored, such as Pastoral Assistant and Worship Arts The Department should consider expanding its Missions and Cross-Cultural Ministries minor into a major; Sport Ministries could perhaps be placed under the Missions umbrella, rather than remaining as its own major; Three faculty hires should be considered: OT, practical theology, and theology Artifacts for eportfolios should continue to be identified Internships that link practice to course requirements should be considered A new ethics course should be considered THEO 211 should be modified to include more church history and to add an ethics component Annual review of adjuncts should be implemented Training for adjunct instructors should be instituted To Mission Statement 8 T heology - Undergraduate

9 By provide we mean the delivery of theological knowledge in both traditional (daytime, semester-long classes) and nontraditional (partial semester, evening, electronic) formats. By practical we intend that the course of study offered be explicitly linked with the practice of Christian ministry in all its various forms, including youth ministry, sports ministry, pastoral ministry, evangelism, missions, and Christian education. By theological education we mean courses in all the theological disciplines: contemporary theology, systematic theology, practical theology, biblical studies, biblical languages, and church history. By effective Christian we mean individuals whose Christian faith is explicitly Evangelical and is clearly evidenced in their personal theology, piety, and morality. Theology, the intellectual component, includes correct and complete doctrine as well as biblical knowledge. Piety, the affective component, includes love for God as evidenced in prayer and worship. Morality, the behavioral component, includes a life characterized by service to others and personal holiness. While each of these components can be considered separately, we believe that in the life of an individual they are intimately interconnected. By leaders we mean the broadest sense of the term. We recognize that Christian leaders do not only serve in churches or guide large organizations. They also operate in sports and campus ministries, on mission fields, in government, in business, in neighborhoods and in homes. They lead worship, lead prayer, lead small groups, lead organizations, lead work teams, lead peers, and lead families. Most importantly, they lead people into a personal relationship with Christ. 9 T heology - Undergraduate
