15 MHI s Long Term 10 t/d CO 2 Capture Demonstration Tests from a Coal Fired Boiler Influence of SOx, NOx & dust in the flue gas (1) SO x The SO x removal efficiency in deep FGD section: =<98% Almost all of the SO x at the outlet of the flue gas cooler was absorbed by the solvent and generated heat-stable salts (HSS) The HSS concentration was maintained at low levels by installing a deep FGD scrubbing section in the bottom of the flue gas cooler (2) NO x Absorption ratio-of NO x Flue gas cooler: almost zero Absorption: 1-3 % The HSS concentration was maintained at low levels (3) DUST An advanced filtration system maintains dust at low levels: =<10mg/kg Influence of dust: no accumulation observed & no flooding or plugging Heat transfer coefficient: No significant decreases were observed in the heat exchanger operated without cooling water 15

16 MHI s Long Term 10 t/d CO 2 Capture Demonstration Tests from a Coal Fired Boiler Conclusion Demonstration operation of ~6,000 hrs was achieved at a commercial coal-fired power station in Japan Behavior and impact of dust, SO x and NO x confirmed Results show that no significant, adverse influences on the process or the equipment were recorded Results indicate that flue gas pre-treatment is important to reduce the level of impurities entering the CO2 Recovery plant In conclusion The MHI CO2 Recovery process can be applied to coal-fired boilers. MHI is working on a next step larger scale demonstration of this process on coal fired flue gas 16

18 Conclusions A) MHI has extensive PCC R&D History (~20 years) B) MHI has multiple commercially operating PCC plants (up to 450 t/d scale) C) CO2 capture was successfully demonstrated on coal fired flue gas using a 10 t/d test plant located in Japan D) Medium scale demonstration of PCC is the next important step leading to commercialization of the technology for coal fired boilers E) MHI continues development of energy efficient solvents and processes through several ongoing projects F) MHI is the only company that can provide a total, integrated environmental solution for CCS at a coal fired power station G) MHI is ready to participate in large scale demonstration or commercial CCS projects and has unmatched experience and expertise in post combustion CO2 capture technology MHI s CO2 recovery process will provide an important counter measure against global warming 18
