OASIS One-Stop Academic Student Integrated System Magdy Attia, Ph.D. Chair of the Council of Deans, Dean of the STEM College

Overview of STEM College Within the newly established STEM College, the university awards Bachelor of Science degrees in the following fields of study: Biology, Chemistry, General Science, Mathematics, Mathematics Education, (in the Natural Sciences & Math Department) and Computer Science-Information Systems, Computer Engineering, and Information Systems Engineering (in the Computer Science & Engineering Department).

Quick Facts Over 400 STEM majors. 33 full- time STEM faculty. (4 female faculty in CSE Dept and 7 female faculty in NSM) High ranking (top 1% among all university in US) for producing African Americans undergraduates majoring in Computer & Information Systems and supporting services since 2004 (Diverse Issues in Higher Education Magazine ). Ongoing assessment programs for student achievement, course retention and student success.

Funded STEM Initiatives Department of Homeland Security/Jackson State/JCSU/UNC-CH: Establish the Center of Excellence for Natural Disasters, Coastal Infrastructure and Emergency Management. Assisting Bioinformatics efforts at minority schools: in collaboration with Pittsburgh Supercomputer Center (PSC). Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LS-AMP) NSF Students & Technology in Academia, Research & Service (STARS Alliance) with UNCC. NSF Innovation Through Institutional Integration Project NSF Broadening Participation Research Initiation Grants in Engineering Towards more Effective Design and Operations of Relief Distribution Networks. 5 Strategic Vision Creates a sustainable academic unit designed to broaden the nation s STEM workforce by enhancing the quality of undergraduate STEM education. Build market-driven curriculum Bioinformatics Medical Informatics Cyber and Electronics Security Renewable Energy Smith Institute of Applied Research-Homeland Security STEM

What is OASIS? JCSU is creating a comprehensive STEM achievement system designed to increase synergy and collaboration among intra and inter-institutional faculty and students. The One-Stop Academic Student Integrated System (OASIS), combines the goals and objectives of STEM activities listed above and establishes an individualized STEM education plan for each STEM student.

OASIS Goals Establishment of Management Framework. Creation of STEM Coaching and Advisement Component Implementation of Individualized STEM Education Plan (ISEP) Development of a STEM Orientation Symposium/Course Development and Implementation of a STEM Student Monitoring System

Model: Engagement, Capacity, and Continuity Engagement: Having an orientation to the sciences and/or quantitative disciplines that includes such qualities as awareness, interest and motivation. Capacity: Possessing the acquired knowledge and skills needed to advance to increasingly rigorous content in the sciences and quantitative disciplines. Continuity: Institutional and programmatic opportunities, material resources and guidance that support advancement to increasingly rigorous content in the sciences and quantitative disciplines.

OASIS Toolbox OASIS proposes to create a toolbox of meaningful Trilogy activities that appear in each of the existing STEM programs at the university, with Individualized STEM Education Plans being developed and implemented for each student. The toolbox will include, but not be limited to: Strong Advisement, Meaningful Research Experiences, Internships, Hospitable Campus Climate, Caring Learning Environment, Tutoring, Faculty/Student Travel, Orientation, and etc.

OASIS Activities Hire and train a team of coach/advisors. Implement a training module for STEM Coaching and Advisement. The Individualized STEM Education Plan (ISEP) consisting of Engagement, Capacity, and Continuity goals will be customized for each STEM, and prospective STEM major. Each student will meet quarterly with assigned STEM Coaching and Advisement staffs. Each student will meet each semester with an anchor program ISEP Review Team for progress monitoring and receive suggestions for tool enhancements.

OASIS Activities (Cont.) Develop an enhanced Orientation course syllabus which includes STEM-related topics around the ECC Trilogy framework. Incorporate a Service Learning activity each semester. Automate the collection of ISEP data elements. Upload student activity data to the Student Progress Monitoring System. Create a centralized web-based monitoring application.

Thanks! One-Stop Academic Student Integrated System
