4 In response to a national call to increase the number of bachelor s prepared nurses, the School of Nursing launched a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree in fall This new degree is based on a conceptual approach to teaching nursing fundamentals; experts call it a quantum leap in preparing the next generation of nursing leaders. 1 Our Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree continues to address the dramatic shortage of registered nurses. Our roots lie in the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy; a religious community of Catholic women who were founded to serve people who suffer from poverty, sickness and lack of education, with special concern for women and children. Over the last century, our educational programs have grown to meet the healthcare community s needs through the establishment of educational programming in nursing (est. 1899), clinical laboratory science (est. 1956), radiologic technology (est. 1960), to name a few. 8 A Community Waiting For You Mercy College of Health Sciences is a specialized institution located in the heart of downtown Des Moines, a vibrant Midwestern city. As the capitol of Iowa, Des Moines boasts a healthy economy, with low unemployment and is home to a number of national and international businesses, including major insurers and healthcare providers. Students have two unique housing options available while attending school. Some choose to live across from the College campus at Mercy Court Apartments.
