In its 17 th edition, this Federação das Indústrias do Estado de Santa Catarina FIESC (Santa Catarina State Industries Federation) publication is sponsored, for the fourth time, by Brasil Telecom. This inventory includes data for 2006 or the most recent data made available by different Brazilian institutions, as well as by FIESC economic and industrial policy unit. It borders the state of Paraná in the north, the state of RioGrande do Sul in the south, the Atlantic Ocean in the east and the Argentine Republic in the west.the state is located inastrategic position formercosur. The capital city, Florianópolis, is km away from Buenos Aires (Argentina), km away from Asunción (Paraguay), km away from Montevideo (Uruguay), 705 km away from São Paulo, km away from Rio de Janeiro, and km away from Brasília, the Brazilian capital city. Santa Catarina territory lies between parallels 25º 57' 41" and 29º 23' 55" south and between meridians 48º 19' 37" and 53º 50' 00" west.

8 SANTA CATARINA STRATEGIC INFORMATION 7 Industrial Santa Catarina Santa Catarina has an outstanding industrial park in Brazil. Santa Catarina s transformation industry ranks fourth in the country in number of companies, and fifth in number of employees. The food sector is the main employer, followed by apparel and textile sectors. Santa Catarina has the seventh highest GDP in Brazil: R$70.2 billion in Preliminary estimates for 2005 are R$83.9 billion. The secondary sector is responsible for 52%, services, for 34%, and the primary sector, for 14%. The share of the transformation industry in the secondary sector is 42%. Our industrial economy is characterized by its concentration in different hubs, which gives the states different regions a balanced development pattern: ceramic, coal, and disposable plastics hubs in the south, food hub in the west, textile and crystal hubs in the Itajaí River Valley, metal mechanic and furniture hubs in the north, timber hub in the Highlands and technology around the Capital City. Despite this regional concentration, many counties have been making different choices, which leads to the strengthening of different sectors, such as the apparel industry in the north and in the south, and furniture in the west. There are many important industries in Santa Catarina, some of which are internationally renowned. We lead the Latin American household appliances (white goods), machinery for the timber industry, starting drivers, automotive pulleys and bearings, crochet threads, elastic bands, and jersey shirts markets. In addition, Santa Catarina features Latin America s largest independent foundry. It also outstands as the world s largest producer of hermetic compressors, dental instruments, beer mugs, and twoply toilet paper. The state is also considered the second main producer of jersey clothing. We are the largest swine and fish producers and the second chicken producers in Brazil. We are leaders in the domestic production of trophies and plaques, telephone exchanges, air compressors, forged and fire galvanized electrical hardware for electric energy, cable TV and telephony distribution, pine doors and jambs, bicycle parts, plastic packaging for fertilizers, corrugated cardboard packaging, recycled PET and polyethylene ropes and strings, processes food (poultry and pork), telephone directory assistance software, casting technology for the automotive industry, cast iron connections for hydraulic and gas networks, machinery for the wood sector, sportswear, mainly surfware, and exhaust replacement. The largest Brazilian distributor of disposable medical and hospital products is located in Santa Catarina. The state stands out for being the number one Brazilian state in the use of the transformation industry installed capacity, which operates at an average of 83% of its production capacity. Santa Catarina is one of the main exporting states in Brazil. In 2006, we exported US$6 billion 4.3% of total Brazilian exports, which made Santa Catarina rank ninth amongst Brazilian states, with a positive result of US$ 2.5 billion in the trade balance. The main destination markets in 2006 were the United States (23%), Argentina (6.6%), Germany (4.7%), and the Netherlands (4.3%).

9 8 SANTA CATARINA STRATEGIC INFORMATION The share of the industrial sector in the state s exports is 70%. We have a significant port structure, through which a great part of our production is marketed: ports of Itajaí, São Francisco do Sul, and Imbituba. The Laguna port is dedicated to fishery. Additionally, the ports of Navegantes and Itapoá will be operating in the short and medium terms respectively, which will add logistic value to our region. SOME PROMINENT SECTORS: FOOD Santa Catarina has a very strong food industry. It ranks first in the swine production and second in the czhicken production in Brazil. It also leads the national fish production. CERAMICS Santa Catarina features an important ceramic hub, with most industries located in Southern SC. Exporting to 118 countries; we are Brazilian number one ceramics exporters. Our main import markets are the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Argentina. MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT As the second most important industrial activity in the state of Santa Catarina, the machinery and equipment sector stands out in the production of compressors and household appliances (white goods). The most important companies are located in Northern SC, mainly in the city of Joinville. TEXTILE AND CLOTHING INDUSTRIES Brazil s second largest textile and clothing hub is located in Santa Catarina. The world s second major manufacturer Tshirts is also located here. We lead the Latin American crochet threads and elastic bands. The manufacturing of bed, table, and bathroom linen is also significant. We are Brazil s largest exporter of bathroom and kitchen textiles, cotton tablecloth fabrics, and jersey Tshirts. ELECTRIC MACHINERY, EQUIPMENT, AND HARDWARE The share of the electric machinery, equipment, and hardware sector in the SC industry is 5.7%, whereas its share in the same sector at the national level is 12%. Most important is the manufacture of electric generators, transformers, and motors. Santa Catarina is Brazil s largest exporter of electric motors; this sector has 13 thousand employees. PAPER AND PULP The paper and pulp industry has 15 thousand employees in its 340 companies. Its share in the SC industry is 5%, whereas its share in the same sector at the national level is 7%. We lead the nation s manufacture of corrugated cardboard packaging. FURNITURE Santa Catarina stands out in the domestic production of mainly wooden furniture items, and it s Brazil s main exporting state in this area. It has 31 thousand employees, 34% of which work in São Bento do Sul and Rio Negrinho. In Western SC is located our second most important furniture hub. PLASTICS The state s plastics industry has 26 thousand employees in 690 firms. It stands out in nationally in the manufacturing of PVC pipes and connections, packaging, disposable plastic items (cups, jars, and dishes), home utilities, recycled PET ropes and strings. TIMBER The SC timber industry has 43 thousand employees in firms. It s share in the same Brazilian domestic sector is 16%. We are Brazil s top manufacturers of pine doors and jambs and lead this sector s exports. METALLURGY Latin America s largest independent foundry is located in Santa Catarina, with special emphasis on the manufacturing of cast items for the automotive industry and of iron connections for water and gas networks. We lead the national market of galvanized electrical hardware for electric energy, cable TV, and telephony distribution. Basic metallurgy employs 17 mil workers and the metal production sector, 22 thousand.

Technology complex Main hubs: Blumenau, Florianópolis, and Joinville.In the Great Florianópolis, there are close to 230 technologybased companies, with a total turnover of R$ 593 million and direct jobs. For the three above hubs put together, the estimated figures are: 1,500 companies, turnover ofr$1billion, and 15 thousand direct jobs.

Main products: porcelain tiles, glazed tiles, flooring, façade tiles, as well as specialty ceramic pieces. In 2006, its production volume was 30,878 thousand m, with a turnover of R$ million. In this segment, it ranks second in turnover and first in profit amongst Brazilian companies. Cecrisa participates in national and international fairs such as Revestir (SP), Cersaie (Bologne Italy), Covering s (USA), Surfaces (Las Vegas USA) as an exhibitor. It launched a new type of porcelain tiles, Tecno, in the following lines: Intense, Loft, Duramax, and Denim. Eliane Revestimentos Cerâmicos S/A It is located in Cocal do Sul, where it has 1,804 employees. Eliane manufactures glazed and ceramic tiles for walls and flooring. In 2006, its turnover was R$ million and its production, 21,108 thousand m2. The company s share on the domestic market is 6.5%, on the Latin American market, 3%, and on the world market, 0.6%. It s part of Maximiliano Gaidzinski School group, offering vocational training in ceramics, which now became an institute because it offers, since 2006, undergraduate studies in: Ceramics engineering, Accounting, Business Administration, and Pedagogy Product: ceramic tiles. In 2006, its production volume was million m, with a turnover of R$ 511 million. Cerâmica Urussanga S/A This company is a part of the Ceusa group. It is located in Urussanga, where it has 271 employees. In 2006, its turnover was R$ 80.6 million, and the production, 2.6 million m2. Products: ceramic tiles, floorings, and specialty pieces. Oxford S/A Indústria e Comércio Manufactures china and porcelain (dishes, cups, platters, etc). It s located in São Bento do Sul, where it has 1,444 employees. In 2006, its production was 38 million pieces, and its turnover, R$64.6 million. Carbonífera Criciúma S/A It is located in Criciúma County, and has 749 employees. Product: coal. In 2006, its turnover was R$94.3 million, with a production of thousand tons. Cristallerie Strauss S/A It is located in Blumenau County, where it has 270 employees. In 2006, its turnover was R$ 15 million, with the production of 1.1 million pieces. Main products: lead crystal 24% Pb cups, glasses, decorative objects, and tableware. Moliza Revestimentos Cerâmicos Ltda. Manufacturer of ceramic flooring in Morro da Fumaça County, where it has 175 employees. In 2006, its production was 12 million m2, and its turnover, R$21.4 million. Indústria Cerâmica Imbituba S/A Manufacturer of glazed and ceramic wall tiles. It is located in Imbituba, where it has 336 employees. In 2006, its turnover was R$ 24 million, and its production, 3.36 million m2. Casagrande Revestimentos Cerâmicos S/A The company has 197 employees in it s plants in Mafra and Rio Negrinho Counties. Product: ceramic tiles. In 2006, its turnover was R$ 40.7 million, and its production, 4.7 million m2. Cerâmica Novagres Ltda. The company is a part of the Ceusa group, located in Urussanga County. It has 74 employees. Schmidt group company (from São Paulo), has a plant in Pomerode. Manufactures cups, saucers, and dishes. METALLURGY Electro Aço Altona S/A Located in Blumenau County, has 1,007 employees. Main products: special steel cast and machined components for different sectors machinery, such as building, mining, energy generation, oil drilling, capital goods, and others. In 2006, their production volume was 13,896 thousand tons, with a turnover of R$ million. The company ranks sixth on the domestic market and seventh in Latin America. It is ISO 9001:2000 (BVC), ISO/TS :2002 certified. The company invests strongly in environmental control and social responsibility, safety, and occupational health; it will soon be ISO 14001, AS 8000, and OHSAS certified. Metisa Metalúrgica Timboense S/A It is located in Timbó and has 944 employees. In 2006, the company produced 46,769 tons and had a turnover of R$ million. Main products: tractor parts, parts for agricultural tools, manual tools, blades for cutting ornamental stones, railroad accessories, and parts for road tools, etc. NBR ISO 9001:2000 certified. Metisa is the number one Latin American manufacturer of parts for soil penetration, world leader in blades for cutting ornamental stones, national leader and one of the largest world manufacturer of shoves, national leader in the manufacture of plow discs, grids, planting machines, and other agricultural tools in Brazil. Has been exporting for over 30 years, to over 40 countries, in all continents. Tupy Fundições Ltda. The company is located in the city of Joinville, where it has 6,748 employees. Amongst its main products are cast iron products for the global automotive industry, cast iron connections for water/ gas systems, and steel dust for foundries, steel mills, and marble companies. In 2006, its production volume was 399,383 thousand tons, with a turnover of R$ 1.5 billion. It s the domestic market leader, the largest independent foundry in Latin America, and the fifth largest one in the world. The company is renowned for the high technology and quality of its products. Amongst its clients are Jaguar, Audi, DaimlerChrysler, Honda, Ford, General Motors, Peugeot, Cummins, Renault, Volkswagen, and others. The company complies with international environmental protection standards and with the Brazilian government regulations (ISO 14001:2004). Açopeças Indústria de Peças de Aço Ltda. Manufacturer of forged parts for the automotive industry, the company is located in Guabiruba County, where it has 210 employees. In 2006, its production volume was 14 million parts, with a turnover of R$ 35 million. Vega do Sul S/A The company is located in São Francisco do Sul County, where it has 354 employees. Main product: galvanized steel coils. Its 2006 production was 933 thousand tons, and its turnover, R$ 2.22 billion. The company is a part of the ArcelorMittal group, from Luxembourg. Docol Metais Sanitários Ltda. The company is located in the city of Joinville, where it has 939 employees. Main products: flush and ball valves, slide valves, automatic hydro mechanical faucets, mixers for washing basins, bidets, and spray showers. Some of its product lines are: DocolMatic (faucets, mixers, and valves water saving products) and Pressmatic, which uses the exclusive Docol s Hydromechanical System. The DocolTronic line operates with an electronic system, which is triggered by a sensor that detects the approaching of the user s hands and is shut down when the user withdraws his/her hands. In 2006, its production volume was 2,931 tons, with a turnover of R$ 179 million. It is the country s second largest manufacturer in this industry, and the first in metal exports. The company s management is participative, based on a partnership with its employees by means of the Improvement Suggestion Program.

13 12 SANTA CATARINA STRATEGIC INFORMATION Indústria Metalúrgica Santa Líbera Ltda. The company is located in Forquilhinha, with 311 employees. Its 2006 production was 13,937 thousand tons, and its turnover, R$ 67 million. It manufactures fire galvanized electric hardware for electric energy, telephony, and cable TV distribution. It s the number one domestic company in this sector. For 13 years in a row, the electric sector journal Eletricidade Moderna conducted market surveys and pointed out that this company is the market leader. Tuper S/A The company is located in São Bento do Sul County, where it has 631 employees. In 2006 its turnover was R$ million. Main products: steel tubes with seam, special tubes, parts, components, exhaust systems for O&M, automotive exhausts for the spare part market, roofing tiles, and profiles. The company increased its production capacity with a new plant designed to manufacture special tubes (drawn, chemically, and thermally treated), parts, and components. With this new plant, the company s turnover should increase 20%. These products will supply industries such as: automotive, motorcycle parts, shipbuilding, machinery, agricultural equipment, boiler, building, chemical, and petrochemical, amongst others. Sicap Escapamentos is the leader of the spare parts market. Indústrias Vitória Ltda. Located in Joinville County, has 75 employees. The company manufactures mainly trophies and plaques. In 2006, its turnover was R$ 12 million, with the production of thousand units. It s a domestic leader in this industry. Metalúrgica Fey S/A It is located in Indaial and has 382 employees. In 2006, its turnover was R$ 87 million due to its production volume of 12,500 tons. Main products: nuts, bolts, screws, washers, threaded bars, and center pins. It s the fifth largest manufacturer of fixation elements in Brazil. Wiest S/A The company is located in Joinville and has 539 employees. In 2006, its production volume was 13,520 tons, with a turnover of R$ 64.7 million. Main products: car, truck, and bus exhausts, steel tubes with seam, with or without anticorrosive coating, and tubular parts. Acearia Frederico Missner S/A It is located in Luis Alves, and has 150 employees. In 2006, its production volume was one thousand tons of finished parts, with a turnover of R$ 13 million. The company manufactures steel and nodular iron cast parts. It is ISO 9001:2000 certified, and has being exporting since Mill Indústria de Serras Ltda. Located in Lages, has 94 employees. Main products: machinery for timber cutting, conveyor belts, trimming machines, railing machines, and saws. In 2006, its turnover was R$ 13.6 million. Mill Serras is the domestic leader in the new concept of wood sawing technology. Cia. Industrial H. Carlos Schneider The company is located in Joinville and has 945 employees. In 2006, their production volume was 27,636 tons, with a turnover of R$ 234 million. Main products: hexagonal, French, and slotted screws, nuts, bars, and on demand items. The company is number one in Latin American commercial segment. It s a part of CS Participações e Empreendimentos group. Milano Estruturas Metálicas Ltda. Located in Criciúma, has 83 employees. Manufactures towers and substations for electric energy transmission lines. In 2006, the company s production was 4,085 tons, and its turnover was R$ 10.4 million. It ranks fifth in its sector in Brazil. It s an exporting company. Wetzel S/A The company is located in Joinville, where it manufactures components for residential and industrial electric wiring, electric energy transmission and distribution, as well as on demand car parts. In 2006, its production volume was 13,789 tons for the iron department and 4,862 tons for the aluminum department. The overall company turnover was R$ 214 million. Wetzel S/A has 1,269 employees. Metalúrgica Riosulense S/A see under Transportation Material. Metalúrgica Trapp Ltda. Located in Jaraguá do Sul. Main products: electric and gas powered, as well as manual lawn mowers; grinders, fodder grinder, lawn trimmers, sprayers, gardening tools, side grubbers, hedge trimmers, as well as spare parts. The company is a leader in gardening ware in Brazil and Latin America. MECHANICS Whirlpool S/A (Embraco) Part of the Whirlpool Corporation group (USA). Its activities are centered in Joinville and it has 5,401 employees. In 2006, the company s turnover was R$ 1.3 billion, and its production volume, 17 million units.
