2 Dear Colleagues, Science - Education - Friendship The 9th EFORT Congress, held in Nice, France, from 29 May to 1 June 2008, was a great success. It also marked a further step forward for EFORT and the European orthopaedic community in all aspects of science, education and friendship. More than 3,400 participants from over 60 countries came to listen to free paper sessions, symposia, instructional courses, ExMEx sessions, industry symposia and poster sessions. More than 2,800 abstracts were submitted and 455 were accepted for oral presentation. Over 100 exhibiting companies presented their products. Yet the event was about more than just figures it was about passing on knowledge and experience. The level of the scientific programme was outstanding, and the booked-out ExMEx sessions will be a particular point of focus for next year. Don't miss your chance to pre-register for next year's sessions on the Vienna congress website. We are all looking forward to next year's EFORT congress from 3-6 June 2009 in Vienna, Austria. The planning for this congress is already well advanced. EFORT is also organising an ExMEx Forum on March 2009 in Berlin on MIS and navigation in hip, knee and spine. EFORT internal affairs 1.1 General Assembly, Nice, 29 May 2008, and changes to the EFORT ExCom The EFORT General Assembly took place at the Hotel Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice during the 9th EFORT Congress from 29 May to 1 June One of the important items on the agenda was the election of a new EFORT Treasurer, a new Member at Large and a new Finance Committee Member. Delegates to the General Assembly voted unanimously in favour of the following appointments for the period:

3 Mr. Stephen R. Cannon to be Treasurer, and Prof. Enric Caceres Palou to be Member at Large Following these appointments, the EFORT Executive Committee for 2009 will consist of the following individuals: President: Prof. Dr. Karl-Göran Thorngren, Sweden Vice-President: Prof. Dr. Miklós Szendroi, Hungary Secretary General: Dr. Manuel Cassiano Neves, Portugal Treasurer: Prof. Dr. Martti Hämäläinen, Finland Past President: Prof. Dr. Wolfhart Puhl, Germany Member at Large I: Prof. Dr. Pierre Hoffmeyer, Switzerland Member at Large II: Prof. Dr. Maurilio Marcacci, Italy Prof. Ketil J. Holen, from Norway, has been elected new EFORT Finance Committee Member to succeed Mr. Michael Benson, United Kingdom, who will retire from all his official positions within the BOA at the end of Obituary: Prof. Erwin Morscher The President and Executive Committee of EFORT were saddened to hear of the death of Professor Erwin Morscher. Professor Morscher was a charismatic individual who occupied many important posts in the worlds of academic and professional orthopaedics. He was elected President of the German Orthopaedic Society for the term (a rare occurrence indeed for a non-german!) and was appointed President of the Swiss Society of Orthopaedics between 1982 and Erwin Morscher was a Trustee of the AO Foundation and a SICOT national delegate. He was also an associate and honorary member of many national and international orthopaedic societies. His major interest, however, was the development of EFORT, which he served at the executive level from 1994, when he was first elected to the Executive Committee as Vice-President. He then served as President for the term. Erwin Morscher understood immediately the importance of a strong and unified orthopaedic field throughout Europe and using his charisma and diplomatic skills he worked tirelessly towards that goal during the latter part of his career. The EFORT community will remember Professor Erwin Morscher as a dedicated surgeon, an original researcher, an outstanding teacher and an esteemed colleague. 4 2. EFORT Advanced Training Programme 2.1 After the congress is before the congress: EFORT is celebrating its 10th Congress in Vienna 3 to 6 June 2009! No sooner has one congress ended than preparations begin for the next. The EFORT Executive Committee and the Austrian Society of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery are delighted to invite you to participate in this event and celebrate EFORT s 10th Anniversary Congress in Vienna from 3 to 6 June Vienna2009 Vienna Congress flyer What is new in Vienna? Apart from our attractive sessions that include symposia, instructional lectures, controversial case discussions, industrial symposia and free paper sessions, the EFORT Scientific Committee has established and enlarged two new formats: For the first time and as a new feature of our congress, EFORT features a Comprehensive orthopaedic Review Course (CRC). This new format is designed for young orthopaedic surgeons and residents in training. It aims to teach the knowledge that is needed for every specialist, and broaden the participant's orthopaedic horizons. This course provides up-to-date presentations in five major areas, e.g. lower

5 and upper extremities, spine, paediatrics and basic science. Attending this comprehensive full-day review course will provide the necessary knowledge base to prepare for the European Board examination (EBOT). The Comprehensive Review Course (CRC), 4th June. Vienna2009 Our ExMEx Sessions are designed for established specialists and senior consultants. The sessions give a review of specific surgical techniques and generally include a technical workshop. A critical review of the individual presentations will take place. ExMEx Sessions are structured for a maximum capacity of 100 participants. The active involvement of attendees maximises the personal and professional gain from these unique encounters. The ExMEx sessions require advance registration. Vienna2009, ExMEx Sessions 2.2 EFORT Instructional Courses As the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, EFORT has established as one of its goals the development of orthopaedic care by improving the level of training and making it more uniform around Europe. EFORT portal news 3.1 Portal news from Nice: Activities of the EFORT Portal Content Steering Group During the 9th EFORT Congress, held in Nice from 29 May to 1 June 2008, the EFORT Portal Content Steering Group (CSG), under the guidance of its chairman Prof. Klaus-Peter Günter, met for its 2008 annual meeting to discuss and prepare future activities surrounding the new EFORT portal.

More details about the CSG: EFORT - CSG Five scientific reporters young European orthopaedic surgeons visited symposia and workshops to report on these events from their expert perspective and to draw up Scientific Reports, which are now available on the EFORT portal. See videos of the scientific sessions: Scientific sessions 3.2 Introducing the new EFORT Portal Manager Mr. Karl-Hans König took over responsibility for the EFORT portal as its Portal Manager from 1 April With his wide range of experience in the fields of internet, intranet and online communications, Karl-Hans König will raise the portal to a new level of communication, collaboration and knowledge exchange. After analysing the expectations and needs of our European orthopaedic community, Karl-Hans will redesign and restructure the portal and update its content on a continuous basis. Using a new content management system called Kentico, to be implemented within the next month, the new EFORT portal offers many opportunities to improve communication and collaboration within EFORT. We wish Karl-Hans every success with his new challenge.
