3 1. Data Recovery, Conversion and Migration IPL has been delivering high quality, complex solutions to the public and private sector for more than 30 years. Irrespective of whether data requires migration due to the replacement of legacy systems, consolidation of a complex systems landscape, a move to cloud storage, or due to business reasons such as mergers, Our quality-driven approach to data migration can ensure that each migration exercise is designed and tested robustly so that all aspects of the migration process are managed successfully. We have been very successful in carrying out large-scale migration of business critical data. For example, the migration of more than 5 million end-customer Current Accounts across from a legacy banking platform to a new strategic platform. IPL helps mitigate the risks involved with such projects by defining a migration strategy and phased plan which focus on data quality and incorporate appropriate testing procedures. We can provide end-to-end capability for data migration, utilising security-cleared data migration experts to ensure the project results in a successful conclusion, on time and with minimal post-migration issues. Detailed Service Definition IPL provides an end-to-end service for data migration and data conversion, with data migration experts who are able to participate in project management, planning, analysis and design, as well as being able to provide build, delivery and support services. We have extensive integration experience across all major technology platforms. Experience with migration technology tools such as ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) tools from a number of different vendors, allows us to develop and test complex migration processes to ensure successful project delivery. Security-cleared data migration experts work with the client to define a data migration strategy tailored to their specific situation. A typical data migration strategy will include the following stages: Planning Analysis Design Build and Test Execution Support Scope Source Mapping ETL Coding ETL run Monitoring Priorities Target ETL ETL Testing Verifying Incident Management Data Quality Auditing and Logging 2.1. Planning Early-stage planning plays an important role in any data migration exercise and requires close liaison with the client to ensure the project scope and priorities are defined and agreed Analysis Successful migration relies on a deep understanding of the data and systems involved. Thorough analysis provides input for the design process and defines data lineages (source-to-target mappings) that need to be implemented. We recommend the use of Data Profiling techniques and tools to understand applicable data quality issues Design A detailed design will be established to define data models to be used, the structure of the ETL to be implemented, auditing and logging requirements for feedback and control of the process, and develop project plans for go-live and data recovery Build and Test ETL packages are implemented and tested to ensure they meet the project requirements. Testing will focus on several levels, from detailed Unit Testing to ensure data lineages are being implemented correctly, to higher level Integration Testing for validation of the high level business logic and finally Performance Testing and User Acceptance Testing. 5 2.5. Execution and Support Final execution of the data migration package(s) is planned in detail to ensure data migration minimises any impact on systems and their users. A substantial data migration, such as migrating more than 5 million banking customers, requires comprehensive support after go-live to monitor the ongoing Data Quality levels and incorporates Incident Management, where appropriate, to track issues with data integrity. 3. Glossary Term ETL Data Quality Data Profiling Unit Testing Integration Testing Definition Extract, Transform and Load. A category of tools used for moving data from one place to another, and typically used for loading data warehouses and data migrations A discipline within Information Management that aims to ensure, using tools and processes, a high level of quality of data in an organisation. Tools with Data Profiling capability allow systems to be interrogated to understand the quality of data within, for example, how many customer records have a blank postcode? Testing of low level units of work, for example ETL packages designed to implement an aspect of a data migration, to see how well they fulfil their goals. Unit tests will ensure the data lineages for a package are adhered to. Testing of a combination of packages to ensure they fulfil their goals when they work in concert as part of a data migration execution.
