9 North American Wetlands Conservation Fund Funding comes from fines for violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Criminal fine BP agreed to pay for one misdemeanor count of violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. NAWCF to receive $100 million over 5 years. Funds projects to restore and conserve wetlands in the Gulf, or that would benefit migratory bird species and other wildlife and habitat affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. 9 I RALLY 2015
10 Why Land Protection for Gulf Restoration? It works. Permanent protection of land allows for the restoration of natural resources It is feasible. There are thousands of willing property owners in the Gulf region who would sell their land or enter into conservation agreements It provides co-benefits. Decades of research show that permanent land protection restores and protects habitats, restores and protects water quality, protects and restores living coastal and marine resources, restores and enhances natural processes and shorelines, and promotes community resilience and provides recreational opportunities. More than 80% of land in the Gulf region is privately owned. 10 I RALLY 2015
