2 PROGRAM PURPOSE The goal of the Bachelor s of Kinesiology program at Boise State University is to help students understand the interdisciplinary nature of kinesiology and the importance of making connections within and between the content areas. We want to enable graduates, as practitioners, to understand and evaluate information and enhance their ability to make evidence-based decisions as they help others improve health, fitness, performance, movement outcomes, safety, and efficiency. The B.S. in Kinesiology has three emphasis areas: Biomechanics, Exercise Science (two foci: Exercise Physiology or Applied Exercise Leadership), and Pre-Allied Health. In addition to the Boise State University Learning Outcomes, the overall objectives of the degree in Kinesiology are for students to: demonstrate knowledge about physical activity, exercise, sport, and health-related issues demonstrate the knowledge and competencies necessary to make appropriate evidence-based decisions recognize the role of physical activity in health and function across the lifespan integrate knowledge across the Kinesiology sub-disciplines develop analytical and problem-solving skills demonstrate the ability to effectively work in teams demonstrate personal appreciation of physical fitness Kinesiology Degree Advisors: Academic Tina Freeman Senior year, Internship, and Career Biomechanics: TBD Exercise Science: Dr. Simonson Pre-Allied Health: Dr. Conger 2
3 PROGRAM ENTRY APPLICATION The Bachelor s of Kinesiology degree program requires an entry application during the spring of the student s sophomore year. The intent of this application process is to ensure that the student understands the degree and the curriculum requirements that they wish to pursue and that students are prepared for upper division courses. This process also helps students complete the degree requirements and graduate in a timely fashion. Thirty-two students will be admitted to each cohort. The successful candidate will be committed to the process of developing the skills, knowledge, and professional dispositions of highly effective Kinesiologists. The Bachelor s of Kinesiology application process includes: Step 1: Complete the Fitnessgram fitness assessment during the fall of the sophomore year. Step 5: Entry-level Interview (occurs prior to Spring Break). Step 6: The Admissions Committee, consisting of three Kinesiology faculty, will screen Kinesiology degree candidate applications, review concept and fitness assessments, and conduct entry-level interviews. Admissions Committee selection notification will be sent prior to 5 days before students may register for fall courses. Students who do not make the final selection will be able to submit an appeal for reconsideration into the program (see page 9). Those Kinesiology degree seeking students admitted to the program will be assigned a cohort* and will be permitted to enroll in upper division Kinesiology courses during the Fall enrollment period.
