Pennsylvania s comprehensive transportation network includes: 3 Major Ports o Access to the Atlantic via the Port of Philadelphia o Access to the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean via the Port of Erie. o Port of Pittsburgh is the 2nd largest inland port in the U.S., with access to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic, as well as the Pacific through the Panama Canal Modern Freight Railroad System o Pennsylvania leads the U.S. with more than 65 operating railroads and ranks 5 th in the nation in total track mileage at approximately 5,600 miles o Pennsylvania rail freight employment ranks 8 th in the nation with 6,490 jobs o 3 Class 1 railroads serve the Port of Philadelphia Airports o 6 international airports and 15 scheduled service airports, boarding over 20 million passengers and moving nearly 1.2 million metric tons of cargo annually Extensive Highway System o Pennsylvania has over 120,000 miles of highways and invests nearly $3.2 billion annually on road and bridge construction and maintenance Pennsylvania provides 7 approved general-purpose foreign trade zones. Individual manufacturers also hold sub zones, which are special-purpose zones, usually located at manufacturing facilities.
