2 Words of Welcome... Institute for Procedural Law and Attorney Regulations (IPA) Hanover Vis Alumni Association (HVAA) On behalf of the Institute for Procedural Law and Attorney Regulations (IPA) and the Hanover Vis Alumni Association (HVAA) we would like to give you a very warm welcome to the 7th Hanover PreMoot. For three days Hanover will become Vindobona, Danubia. We are proud to organize and host this event, which has become a wellestablished tradition since its first edition in With 22 participating teams the Hanover PreMoot is among the largest PreMoots in Europe. Nevertheless, we hope that this event will still provide you with the honest hospitality in a familylike atmosphere it is known for. Moreover, we are sure that our PreMoot will serve you with a combination of an academic and intellectual challenge where you can improve strategic thinking and experience law in a cross-cultural atmosphere. For the second time we are hosting an international PreMoot conference as a warm up for arbitrators and coaches. The topic of this year s conference is Autonomy vs. Policy. We are very proud and thankful that we can present an outstanding penal of international well recognized practitioners. Our special thanks go to: Professor Dr. Eckart Brödermann, LL.M., Amy Cohen Kläsener, Professor Dr. Hartmut Hamann, Wang Yuan, LL.M. and Professor Burt Newborn, LL.B. (for more detail, please see page 9). Many thanks also go to all the arbitrators, who devote themselves voluntary to the great Willem C. Vis Moot Community serving as arbitrators here in Hanover. In each pleading the mooties will find a tribunal composed of high ranking practitioners and coaches or former mooties.

3 The Willem C. Vis Moot is designed to be an educational program with many facets of real Legal Profession in the form of a competition. Hopefully, this PreMoot will similarly be an educational and beneficial experience for everyone. Therefore, all teammembers and coaches are encouraged to watch other pleadings when not scheduled to argue or to arbitrate (and if not forbidden by the rules of the Willem C. Vis Moot). We hope that the day s events will not only allow teams to further refine their arguments and oral presentation but also to get in contact with each other. One especially will have the opportunity to socialize during the evening reception at the Dachgeschoss on Thursday night and the dinner party on Friday night. These events are both sponsored by Gleiss Lutz and Göhmann Rechtsanwälte und Notare. We are very thankful for the support given to us by both law firms. May the Hanover PreMoot be one harold for the spirit of the Willem C. Vis Moot in Hong Kong and Vienna. It is great privilege for us to have you all here in Hanover. We hope you will enjoy your stay. 5 About... Hanover Vis Alumni Association (HVAA) Hannoverscher Ehemaligenverein des Willem C. Moot Wettbewerbs e.v. The Hanover Vis Alumni Association e.v. is a forum for former and current participants of the Willem C. Vis Moot Court and the Willem C. Vis (East) Moot Court to unite and network. It shall serve as a platform for exchanging experience and knowledge. Another major aspect for the Hanover Vis Alumni Association is the ideal and financial support for the current Vis Moot Team. The participation in the Willem C. Vis is a unique chance for every student but is also a challenge. Being aware of that, the Hanover Vis Alumni Association tries to forward experiences from former team members, having started their career out in the world already, to the next generation of Mooties. Moreover, we are supporting the Hanover PreMoot by acting as Arbitrators and by organizing pleadings in Law Firms. We appreciated that for our former participation in the Willem C. Vis only personal qualification was decisive but not any personal financial aspects. Together with the sponsors of the Willem C. Vis we regard it as our duty to help the next generation of participants to keep it like that. For more information about the HVAA visit our website 5

6 Special thanks to... Gleiss Lutz, Stuttgart Göhmann Rechtsanwälte und Notare, Hanover The Hanover Vis Moot Team and the Institute for Procedural Law and Attorney Regulations thanks all Arbitrators and Teams for coming to Hanover and making the PreMoot such a valuable event. To make this PreMoot a rememberable experience it needs more than tremendous arbitrators and perfectly prepared teams. In this regard we would particularly like to highlight the importance of the funding given to us by our supporters. Without the generous support of Gleiss Lutz, Stuttgart and Göhmann Rechtsanwälte und Notare, Hanover it would have been very difficult for us to offer you the two evening receptions on Thursday and Friday and therefore making the 7th Hanover PreMoot the event it should be. 6
