2 1. Please provide a brief overview of your organization s mission and work. The National Law School of India University came into existence through a Notification under the National Law School of India University Act (Karnataka Act 22 of 1986). It signified the culmination of efforts by the Judiciary, the Bar Council of India, the Karnataka Bar Council, the Bangalore University and the Government of Karnataka to reform legal education and to establish a centre of excellence for legal education and research in India. The Chief Justice of India is the Chancellor of the University. The Chairman, Bar Council of India, is the Chairman of the General Council. Degrees offered in the University include B.A. LLB (Hons.), LLM, M.Phil, LLD, Ph.D. The University also runs distance education diploma courses. Quite a few research centres actively operate in various streams of Law in the National Law School of India University. Some which are associated with Human Rights in particular are Human Rights Lawyering Project, Centre for Women & the Law (CWL), Centre For Child and the Law (CCL), Centre for Environmental Education, Research and Advocacy (CEERA), Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy(CSSEIP), National Institute of Human Rights (NIHR), The Institute of Law & Ethics in Medicine (TILEM), and Commons Cell. Endowment Chairs associated with the area of Human Rights in National Law School of India University are UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) Chair on Refugee Law, the NHRC (National Human Rights Commission) Chair on Human Rights, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment Chair on Juvenile Justice, and Ministry of Consumer Affairs Chair on Consumer Law & Practice. The Law School has undertaken many research projects funded by the UGC, the Government of India, the Government of Karnataka, the Department of Women and Child Development, the UN agencies, the World Bank, HIVOS etc. These have served to strengthen research and teaching at the Law School. The National Law School of India University has exchange programmes with the National University of Singapore, Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Canada and Buceuius Law School, Germany. Students from the Law School have spent a Semester in these Law Schools and their students have spent at least a Trimester here. Eighteen batches have completed their studies here. Many students have pursued further studies in their chosen areas of Law in other prestigious Universities like Oxford, Cambridge, Warwick, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Michigan, York and other Universities abroad on prestigious scholarships like Rhodes and INLAKS. 3 2. Please describe, to the best of your ability, the anticipated assignments and responsibilities of a summer Fellow in your office? A summer Fellow can anticipate research assignments on various areas of research in Law and other allied streams of studies. The research may include field work if so required. A summer Fellow working for the Human Rights Lawyering Project can also expect to work with practicing human rights lawyers and be involved in planning and strategizing. 3. What, if any, specific skills (i.e., language proficiency or computer familiarity) do you require of the Fellow? The fellow should be fluent in English and should be well-versed with MS Word, MS Power Point, and should familiarize herself/ himself with online databases at the Law School. If the Fellow would like to do field work, knowledge of the local language would be essential. 4. Please provide any additional information about your organization that may be helpful to interested applicants. Nil 5.
