1 Shoreline Community College Information Guide UW College of Engineering Transfer Handout Engineering Advising Center 301 Loew Hall, Box Seattle, WA Phone: Written by UW with notes by Shoreline CC in italic. Admission Requirements UW Application Deadlines Pre engineering students must complete prerequisite courses and apply for admission to a Department. Admission is competitive. Transfer applicants wishing to enroll in any of UW s engineering departments must submit two applications one to the UW Office of Admissions and one application to the College of Engineering. Please keep in mind that the University application deadlines are significantly sooner than the College of Engineering application deadlines. More information about requirements and deadlines is provided below. SCC note: UW Admission requires completion of the College Academic Distribution Requirements through either high school or college courses. An Associate s degree and the pre-engineering courses do not automatically complete all of these. Be sure to check the UW Admission requirements early, so that you can take any missing courses before you apply. Qtr. Transfer/Postbac Students International Transfer Students Aut. February 15 February 15 Win. September 1 No Admission Spr. December 15* December 15* (BioE/ChemE only) Sum. February 15 February 15 Students can find out more about applying for transfer to UW at: Departmental Application Deadlines Autumn Quarter July 1 All Departments, with the exception of Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering, admit transfer students Autumn Quarter. Students interested in Bioengineering should visit the Bioengineering website for information on transfer strategies ( *Spring Quarter February 1 Bioengineering, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Materials Science, Bioresource Science, and Human Centered Design and Engineering admit students Spring Quarter. Aeronautics and Astronautics, Civil & Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering DO NOT ADMIT students Spring Quarter. *Spring quarter admission to the University is only an option for students who are also applying for direct entry to an engineering program that offers spring admission. Because spring quarter is not open for general admission, the University online application will not be available. Applicants will submit a paper application to the UW Admissions Office. Note: Students interested in applying to Bioresource Science and Engineering can apply on a continuous basis please [email protected] for more information. The departmental application generally opens two weeks prior to the application deadline: Last Revised September 2012/ Update February 2013, June 2014
2 College of Engineering Application and graduation requirements in mathematics, natural sciences, Admission/Graduation written and oral communication and engineering fundamentals for all Requirements engineering programs are summarized on the next page. A majority of these requirements are typically completed in the first two years of study prior to transfer. For more information on Human Centered Design and Engineering program requirements, contact the department adviser or the Engineering Advising Center ([email protected]). For graduation all programs require minimum of 10 credits of VLPA and 10 credits of I&S course work plus an additional 4-10 credits of coursework from either category. The total VLPA/I&S requirements as well as other graduation requirements for each department is available on line here: It is generally recommended that about half of the VLPA and I&S requirements be taken during the first two years of study. Other Information Each department has similar minimum requirements for application. The requirements listed are a minimum only however, the GPA of those offered admission is much higher. Departmental Minimum Application Requirements AA, CEE, MSE, ME ChemE, ISE, BSE BioE EE HCDE 2.0 in each prerequisite course 2.50 cumulative average 2.50 cumulative average 2.00 cumulative average 3.00 in the 13 required Written and Oral Communications credits SCC note: Many departments have an admission average of 3.4/3.5, some even higher. Since this is the average, some students with a lower gpa are also admitted. This gpa is calculated from the Upper Division Admission Requirement course grades. For courses taken twice, both grades are used. Besides the gpa, departments also look at the pattern of grades and information you provide in your application statement. As always, for specifics and the most current information, contact the department. The Upper Division Admission Requirements listed on the following pages are for admission only and are subject to change. Some courses not demarcated by a diamond may count toward an upper division engineering elective. Please see individual department requirements for an exhaustive list of graduation requirements. Associate Degree SCC note: The Associate in Sciences Transfer, Track 2 is designed to help students prepare for entry to a university at the junior level in engineering or related field such as astronomy and physics. AS-T Track 2 course requirements generally match pre-engineering course requirements; please see the Shoreline CC handouts for specifics. Universities do not require an Associate s degree for admission.
