Plan of Study for Acoustical Engineering Concentration in Multidisciplinary Engineering. 120 credits. ABET accredited (BSE). Credits First year Engineering Program: If the common first year program in engineering is changed, the BSE requirements will be changed to reflect these changes. Students are very strongly advised to take a CAD course such as CGT or during their first year in engineering. A CAD course is required for this concentration Communications: COM or equivalent. These courses can count towards the first year program, towards the general education program, or towards the Area requirements. Recommendation is to take COM as part of the FYE program. (3 counted elsewhere) General Education: Follow Engineering s General Education Program requirements. 18 Strongly suggest MUS 25000, MUS 36100, MUS 36200, and THTR Required sophomore mathematics: Multivariate calculus (MA 26100), and linear algebra & differential equations, MA or (MA & 26600), or equivalent 8-10 Sophomore Science selective. Must take PHYS 24100, or equivalent. 3-4 Statistics selective: One of the following: IDE 49500*, IE 23000, CHE 32000, STAT 35000, STAT or equivalent. The engineering courses (IDE 49500, IE 23000, IE 33000, or CHE 32000) count towards the required 45 credits in engineering. If used, STAT or count towards the Area requirements and help fill the accreditation requirement for Math and basic sciences. * IDE is normal course. (3 counted elsewhere) Accreditation Requirement for Mathematics and Basic Sciences: There must be a minimum of 30 credits of mathematics and basic sciences (biological, chemical and physical). Students who take MA 16500, 16600, 26100, 26200, CHM 11500, CHM11600, PHYS 17200, and PHYS meet this requirement with 31 credits. Students who take this sequence with CS (3 cr, which counts in the FYE program) in the first year instead of CHM are 3 credits short. Students in the Acoustical Engineering concentration should strongly consider taking SLHS 30200, Acoustics Bases of Speech & Hearing (3 cr.). An alternative is to take a 3 credit science or mathematics or statistics course. Credits are counted either in FYE program or in non-engineering area electives. Engineering: Minimum 45* credits at 200+ levels, of which at least 18 credits are at 300+ levels and 6 credits of the 18 must be at 400+ level. Maximum number of credits in any engineering discipline is 24. Note: It is the student s responsibility to see that all prerequisites are met. *With prior approval from the Director of the Multidisciplinary Engineering program and the professor teaching THTR 59700, 3 credits of THTR may substitute for 3 credits of engineering.
Required Engineering Core: (Can substitute or transfer equivalent courses except for IDE and major design experience courses, which must be taken at Purdue-West Lafayette.) A minimum of 15 credits of engineering at the 200+ level must be taken at Purdue-West Lafayette. Topic: Example Courses: Credits Electrical circuits ECE or equivalent 3 Statics and Dynamics* (ME ), AAE 20300, (CE ) or equiv. 3/6 Fluid mechanics* ME (1 cr. counts as lab), CE 34000, AAE 33300, CHE (1 cr. Counts as lab) or equivalent 3 Thermodynamics ME 20000, ABE 21000, CHE or equivalent 3 or 4 Engineering Economics IE or equivalent 3 Major design experience EPCS , IDE 48500, or other approved major design experience courses [e.g., ECE IDE or THTR IDE 48700] 3 or 4 Professional Preparation IDE Typical Engineering Core total credits Most common core 22 *Most fluids courses require a statics/dynamics prerequisite. The recommended sequences are: CE CE CE CE cr core + 1 cr lab ME ME ME cr core + 1 cr lab AAE AAE AAE cr core + 1 cr lab Students who plan to earn a minor in mechanical engineering should take the ME sequence. Some mixing of courses is allowed because courses are considered to be equivalent (for example, ME CE CE CE 34300), but students should discuss other sequences with an advisor first. Engineering Selectives: Do parts a, b, and c. a. Three additional credits of engineering design. In this POS take either ECE (cannot be used both as major design experience and as design selective) or ME Should be completed before senior major design experience. (3 counted elsewhere) b. Three credits of hands-on (not computer) laboratory. At least 2 credits must be in engineering (Example courses: AAE 20401, AAE 33301, AAE 35201, AAE 36401, BME 20600, ECE 20700, ECE 20800, ECE 32300, CE 34300, CE 34400, and the following count for 1 credit each: ABE 30500, ECE 27000, CE 35200, CE 35300, CHE 37700, CHE 37800, ME 30900, MSE 23500, MSE 33500, MSE 36700, NUCL 20500). One credit of hands-on lab (not computer) may be in other disciplines (e.g., science, THTR, AD) but courses cannot be one of the required courses in the First Year Engineering Program. (Note: Since CHM or BIOL may be used as a science selective for students in FYE, it satisfies the requirement of one credit of lab, but the credit cannot be double counted.) Only the credits assigned to lab can be included in this category.1 cr. lab (may be counted elsewhere) + 2 engr lab Note: The lecture credits of engineering courses with 1 or 2 credits of lab can be included in engineering electives, and the lecture credit for courses in other disciplines can be in area.
c. Engineering course in materials or strength of materials. (Example courses: MSE 23000, NUCL 27300, AAE 20400, ABE 30500, CE 23100, CE 33300, CHE 33000, or ME 32300). 3 Most commonly taken materials or strength of materials courses, respectively. NUCL is required for the Vibrational option. Total credits engineering selectives: 8 engr + 1 cr lab Area Required Selective in Area: CAD Course such as: CGT 11000, 16300, 16400; THTR or 2 Sound System Engineering Option If possible students in this option are expected to earn an ECE minor, which has a GPA requirement. In selecting engineering area electives and selectives, remember that of the 45 credits of engineering at the 200+ levels, 18 credits must be at 300+ levels, of which at least 6 credits must be at the 400+ level. Selectives: Choose three of the following (also part of ECE minor): ECE Linear Circuit Analysis II 3 ECE Intro to Electronic Analysis and Design 3 ECE Digital Logic Design (also counts as 1 cr lab) 3 (not incl lab) ECE Signals and Systems (3) and ECE 207 (1) (ECE 207 counts as 1 cr lab) ECE Semiconductor Devices (3) and ECE 207 (1) 3+1 ECE Electromechanical Motion Devices (3) and ECE 207 (1) 3+1 ECE Microprocessor Systems and Interfacing (4) (counts as 1 cr lab) 3 (not incl lab) Sound System Selectives total: 9 not incl lab Suggested Engineering electives: CE 35000, CE 35500, ECE 30100, ME 36500, ME 37500, ME (Practical Experience in Vibrations), any courses taken on selective list not taken as selective, additional design courses, and undergraduate research in acoustics. Engineering course taken as Statistics Selective counts as engineering area course, but is not double-counted. Total Engineering Area Courses Minimum total required Engineering 200+ level 45* *42 if THTR IDE with permission are chosen as major design experience. Theatre Selectives: A minimum of seven credits of the following are required for the Sound-System option. Do as many of the following as you can schedule: THTR 16300, , 35300, 36300, 36800, 55300, 56300, 56900, 59700, and DANC Minimum 7 Note 1: Since scheduling is often difficult, substitutions will be allowed with permission of both ENE and the Theater Department. Note 2: After taking a minimum of 7 credits of THTR, students may use one THTR 59700, 3 credit course as an engineering design selective or as the major design experience course (IDE must also be taken) with prior agreement from the Director of the MDE program and the THTR course instructor, but it is not double-counted for graduation.
Area Electives: Strongly consider earning a minor in Theatre Design and Production, which requires THTR in the area (and THTR as a general education elective). Students who did not take a CGT course in the first year program must take a CAD course as an area elective THTR is highly recommended. Also consider ENGL 42100, COM 32500, MA (if take MA 26200), MGMT 20000, MGMT 20100, OBHR 30000, course on entrepreneurship, additional engineering courses, and other courses to meet educational objectives. In selecting engineering area electives and selectives, remember that of the 45 credits of engineering at the 200+ levels, 18 credits must be at 300+ levels, of which at least 6 credits must be at the 400+ level. Do two of the following: ME Noise Control (fulfills design selective requirement, but cannot double count credits) 3 ME Engineering Acoustics 3 ECE Sound Reinforcement Design (design selective, but cannot double count). Cannot use as selective if taken as major design experience course. 3 Additional Selectives. Do either A or B or C. A. A minimum of four of the following credits. Select from: THTR 16300, 25300, 26300, 35300, 36300, 36800, 55300, 56300, 56900, (but not substituted as an engineering major design experience course), and DANC Note: Since scheduling can be difficult, substitutions will be allowed with permission of ENE and THTR. B. Undergraduate research in acoustics (Mechanical Engineering) 3-6 Very highly recommended, particularly for students considering graduate school. C. ME (Practical Experience in Vibrations) 3 Engineering electives: 1. Minor Students should strongly consider a minor in mechanical engineering (To the core and NUCL 27300, add ME if take ME 30900, or add MSE and MSE or add ECE 20700(lab course), ME and ME 37500). Note that this minor has a GPA requirement. 2. Other Engineering Electives: CE 35000, CE 35500, ECE20200, ECE 25500, ECE 27000, ECE 30100, ME 36500, ME 37500, MSE 23000, and additional design courses. Engineering course taken as Statistics Selective counts as engineering area course, but is not double-counted for graduation. Total Engineering Area Courses Total required Engineering 200+ level 45
Area Electives: Consider ENGL 42100, COM 32500, MA (if take MA 26200), MGMT 20000, MGMT 20100, OBHR 30000, courses on entrepreneurship, additional engineering courses, and other courses to meet educational objectives. Statistics course taken as Statistics Selective counts as area course. If needed for accreditation math and basic science requirement, a 3 credit math or basic science course may be counted here. 0-9 Typical total in area 7-17 Minimum required for graduation 120 Other Graduation Requirements: Plans of study for all concentrations must be approved by the School of Engineering Education. All concentrations must be sufficiently different from plans of study in the Schools of Engineering (other than ENE) so that the student s educational goals could not be met in one of those Schools. An overall Graduation Index of 2.0 or higher and a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the engineering courses at the 200 level and higher included in the plan of study are required. All other Purdue University graduation requirements must be satisfied including the requirement of at least 32 credits at the 300 level or above. December 2012
