2 Mediterranean School of Oncology PRESENTATION The rapid advance of science and technology in human medicine has opened huge new opportunities in prevention, diagnosis and therapy. The application of these advances to cancer medicine is essential for human health. The Mediterranean School of Oncology aims at providing health care professionals, i.e., physicians, nurses and investigators who are involved in management of cancer patients, with the best possible deepening of their oncological skill in a specific area or organ site. Additionally, there are training courses designed to fulfil the educational needs of those who have only recently approached cancer medicine and health professionals who are not frequently dealing with cancer patients. The School, which is located in, Italy, is open to candidates of any nationality, allowing the interaction of students with somewhat different national and educational background. I would like very much to welcome you to the courses of the Mediterranean School of Oncology in because we expect both and the courses to be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience. Since only a limited number of students can be accepted, we invite those interested to register as early as possible, to ensure both the possibility of attending the chosen course(s) and the preferred type of accommodation. 3 Introduction New Perspectives in Metastatic Prostate Cancer, June 15, 2012 Domus Nova Bethlem Director Paolo Carlini Oncologia Medica A Istituto Nazionale Tumori Regina Elena - IRCCS Dear Colleagues, it is with great pleasure that we announce this course on: New Perspectives in Metastatic Prostate Cancer. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the western countries among men, and this disease is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in males. Most prostate cancer related deaths are due to advanced disease, which results from any combination of lymphatic, blood, or contiguous local spread. However, not only continuous advances have provided a new understanding of the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of metastatic and advanced prostate cancer, but the earlier definition of advanced disease (bone metastasis and soft-tissue involvement) has also been improved in recent years. This course provides an overview of the current modalities available in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer, highlighting the following points: (i) identification of the population at risk of developing advanced prostate cancer; (ii) how to diagnose metastatic disease; (iii) androgen suppression strategies; (iv) hormonal therapies; (v) systemic chemotherapies; (vi) new drugs for treatment of hormone-refractory prostate cancer, including abiraterone and cabazitaxel. Let s hope that participants will remember this course of the Mediterranean School of Oncology as a highlight of up-to-date training in the field of metastatic prostate cancer.

7 LOCATION AND HOUSING The School venue is situated in the heart of s Old Town; its proximity to Termini station and Metro line B allows the visitor to easily get anywhere in the city. Participants will be housed at the: Domus Nova Bethlem Via Cavour, Italy phone: (+39) Fax (+39) The Domus offers a quiet, confidential environment in the center of, very close to transport links (Termini central train station, the metro, rail link to Fiumicino airport, main roads, etc.). There is also a church and a museum inside the Domus, and these can be visited by appointment. Accommodation is in a single room basis with a limited number of twin rooms available on a first-come first-served basis. The hotel has 24 rooms on two levels, including single, double, and quadruple rooms, as well as a room equipped for disabled access. All rooms are equipped with centralized air-conditioning, safe box, en suite bathroom with shower and hairdryer, telephone, digital terrestrial TV, desk, free wifi connection. In addition to the rooms in the Domus Nova Bethlem, some participants may be housed in local hotels, depending upon the size of the group.

8 HOW TO GET TO THE SCHOOL By plane From within the airport terminal, go to the train station and take the direct train to Termini Station. The train schedule is available on the website of the State Railways: Upon exiting from Termini Station on to Piazzale dei Cinquecento, go straight and turn left onto Via Cavour. Continue along the right side of the road for 500 meters up until number 85. By train Once on Piazzale dei Cinquecento with Termini station behind you, turn to your left and move in the direction of Viale Cavour. Continue along the right side of the road for 500 meters up until number 85. By car Take exit 14 towards Centre/Tangenziale Est. Once you come onto the A24 and have passed through the tunnel, take the left exit to San Giovanni. Enter the Circonvallazione Tiburtina. Continue to Viale Castrense. Then turn right and you will come to Nola street. Turn right again then take the first left at Via di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. Continue on Via di Conte Verde. Turn left and take the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. Turn right to stay on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. Take the left on to Via Carlo Alberto. Turn left again and come onto Via Esquilino. Then take the first left at Piazza Esquilino and continue on Via Cavour up to number 85.

9 REGISTRATION FEE Advanced registration is encouraged as courses are limited to a total of 50 participants. The registration fee includes participation to the classes, educational material and a group photo. The registration fee varies from course to course; the registration fee will be reduced for participants who register 60 days before course commencement, for members of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), for residents and Ph.D. students in oncology or oncology-related disciplines. Cancellations received 15 days before the beginning of the selected course: 30% refund; cancellations received after 15 days before the beginning of the course: no refund.

10 SCHOLARSHIP A limited number of scholarships is made available to candidates who are 30 years of age or younger. The school may grant a full or a partial scholarship. To apply for a scholarship, please send a brief curriculum vitae and/or a letter of presentation from an authorised officer at the institute of your affiliation. Scholarship applications will only be considered if they reach the School secretariat at least 70 days before the commencement of the course. Successful applicants will receive an offer of scholarship from the school approx. 60 days before commencement of the course. Please note that acceptance of the scholarship is subject to your commitment to come to to attend the course. Your acceptance and consequent NON-attendance will prevent another applicant who may not have been as fortunate as yourself, from benefiting from your unused scholarship opportunity. ACCREDITATION All course programs will be submitted for accreditation to the Italian Ministry of Health (Ministero della Salute) for Continuing Medical Education (ECM) credits. Upon completion of the courses, participants will receive a certificate of attendance including an indication of the number of credit awarded. LANGUAGE Most courses will be conducted in English; therefore a good command of the English language is necessary.
