3 May 14, 2015 NGNA Distinguished Nurse Educator Award of I have had the great privilege and honor to be a student and research assistant under the tutelage of Dr. Sharon Wexler. Two years ago, as a junior in the RN4 program at Pace University, I met Dr. Wexler as the professor of the Gerontological Nursing course. To this date, Dr. Wexler has been an extraordinary teacher regarding the care of older adults. Her ability to present information in a format that a student can understand and implement to deliver evidence based, patient centered care for older adults is exceptional. It was here in her class that I found my true calling to specialize as a geriatric nurse. Dr. Wexler took me under her wing and provided me with the opportunity to work on the Gerontological Research team. Seeing my love for older adults, Dr. Wexler established me as a student member of the NGNA whereby I could continue to learn cutting edge advancements in the field of gerontology. Through her mentoring, I was able to present my research poster at the NGNA National Convention in Texas, 2014 as well as many other conferences here in New York City. Dr. Wexler provided guidance and advisement on my research that culminated in its publication by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in May She has instilled confidence in me and pushed me to excel in everything I do. Just this March, I was accepted into the 3 year Adult Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, B.S.N. to D.N.P. program at the University of Hawaii. I owe her a debt of gratitude that can never be fully expressed to Dr. Wexler for empowering me to reach for the stars and make my dreams come true. I can think of no better way to pay tribute to all Dr. Wexler has accomplished in leading future generations into Geriatric Nursing than to award her the NGNA Distinguished Nurse Educator 2015.

4 To Whom It May Concern, I have had the privilege of knowing Dr. Sharon Wexler for almost three years and they have been wonderful years. The first project I worked with Dr. Wexler was a research project examining the attitudes of nursing students toward older adults through an aging sensitivity experience. It was Dr. Wexler s passion and direction that first interested me in geriatric nursing. Additionally, this experience with Dr. Wexler lead me to realize my niche in nursing: nursing research. We presented out work at the Pace University Research Showcase and won second place. Dr. Wexler encouraged me to submit an abstract on our aging sensitivity project for the 2013 NGNA convention and we presented our work there together. Dr. Wexler introduced me to her nursing colleagues who were tremendous and inspirational nurses who are doing wonderful things in geriatric nursing. I truly felt Dr. Wexler had my best interests at heart and she would me frequently about other professional conferences she thought I would find interesting and would promote my professional advancement as well. Dr. Wexler also recruited me to work on her Gerijoy project where I d bring this technology to older adults living in public housing on the lower east side of New York City. The technology is a virtual service dog that improves the quality of life of older adults. I worked on the gerijoy project through my senior year of my undergraduate studies and I continued on this project through graduate school. I received general instructions and guidelines regarding the vision and protocol for this project and I was allowed a lot of leeway how, when and to whom I would introduce this technology to. This independence and the confidence it implied in my abilities boosted my self-confidence significantly and allowed for tremendous personal growth. Working on this project transformed my personal outlook on myself as a working professional, competent nurse, and worthwhile human being. Dr. Wexler is so generous with her praise and her expressions of unwavering confidence in me and my abilities and this has been a priceless gift to me. Dr. Wexler has a unique presence; she somehow manages this incredible balance where she is supportive and patient yet never tells me what to do or spoon feeds me any information. She allows me to grow and mature on my own while she is always present in the background to give advice or direction. She has a strong commitment to nurturing geriatric nurses for the future and has demonstrated this commitment by taking students such as myself under her wing. She introduced me to the world of professional conferences I would not venture into otherwise. She also piqued my interest in geriatric nursing and demonstrated the possibilities for a career path in this field by setting an example. Getting to know Dr. Wexler and being the recipient of her generosity, kindness and guidance has been a true gift to me and I cannot think of a more distinguished educator than she. Sincerely, Chava Pollak

22 Lienhard School of Nursing Office of Academic Affairs 163 William Street Room 502 New York, NY PHONE: (212) FAX: (212) May 15, 2015 To Whom it May Concern, It is my pleasure to nominate Dr. Sharon Stahl Wexler for the National Gerontological Nursing Association s (NGNA) Distinguished Nurse Educator Award. I was on the search committee for the Lienhard School of Nursing and recruited Dr. Wexler for our faculty because of her long-standing expertise and commitment to geriatric nursing. She is a tireless advocate for older adults and a dedicated practitioner and educator who leads students and staff by exemplifying the highest standards of professional practice. As Program Director for our Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program, Dr. Wexler has been instrumental in raising the profile of geriatric nursing across the entire undergraduate department and mentoring other faculty in gerontology. She has developed a cadre of exemplary students who have blazed a trail for their peers implementing evidence based practice projects that improve the care of older adults in acute, long-term and community-based settings. In addition to her inspiring teaching (see letters of support), Dr. Wexler maintains a clinical and consulting practice with Mt. Sinai Medical Center and guided their staff to attaining and maintaining Magnet status. Her role as Nurse Researcher/Gerontological Clinical Nurse Specialist at Mt. Sinai lead her to develop an interprofessional program of funded research in the evolving field of gerontechnology. She is currently the primary investigator on an NYC supported project using an innovative tablet-based computer interface to improve the quality of life for hospitalized older adults. Dr. Wexler is also a steadfast supporter of NGNA. A continuous member since 1996, she served six years as chairperson of the research committee was instrumental in developing the joint Sigma Theta Tau/NGNA Research grant in She became Director at Large in 2014 and participates in strategic planning and organizational government. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any further information that would be helpful. I can be reached by at ldrury@pace.edu or by cell phone Best Regards, Lin Drury, PhD, RN Professor N E W Y O R K C I T Y W E S T C H E S T E R
