Kibler, Ph.D. REGISTRATION Register for Day One only = $ Register for Day Two only = $ Register for Both Days = $ Includes breakfast and lunch each day and all event materials THE TOPIC As a result of campus shootings, other emerging campus violence and the increasing frequency and intensity of mental illness related issues on campus, colleges and universities have responded by implementing a variety of campus safety initiatives, yet, existing threat assessment models translate awkwardly into the campus setting. Law enforcement-based threat assessment models depend at best on sophisticated tools that are not readily applied outside the law enforcement context, and at worst on profiling. When effective, they offer insight into potential criminality. However, much of the behavior that is concerning to campuses today is not criminal in nature.

2 Colleges and universities have historically relied on campus counselors for some measure of insight and analysis of threat assessment. The tools used in the mental health field, often based on actuarial data, are essential for accurately assessing the potential for harm to self and suicidality. While counselors bring a necessary element to the table, they are only part of the overall threat assessment capacity needed. Assessing for the potential of harm to others is also an essential element. Recognizing the limits of current threat assessment capacities, NCHERM has developed a multidisciplinary threat assessment approach that holistically synthesizes three essential bodies of knowledge into a cohesive model encompassing mental healthrelated risk (harm to self), generalized risk (harm to facilities, reputation, finances, etc.), and aggression (harm to others). This Summit provides a multi-faceted exploration of threat assessment and its applicability on campus, not just in behavioral intervention, but in crisis response, emergency management and felony admissions. NCHERM EVENT REFERENCES Here is what some of our attendees thought about the four previous Behavioral Intervention Institutes conducted by NCHERM across the country. For those who attended these events, this upcoming Summit is a perfect follow-up for expanded training and professional development. The NCHERM Threat Assessment Institute provided a valuable opportunity to examine models of best practice, federal laws, and innovative ideas in prevention, identification, and early intervention. What made it so worthwhile for me was how approachable and engaging each presenter was, not just during the sessions, but throughout the entire conference. Anne Lawing, Sr. Asst. A. Sokolow, J.D. is the President of NCHERM, a national multidisciplinary consulting firm dedicated to helping colleges and universities manage risk by advancing student health and safety. NCHERM serves 19 campuses as outside counsel, and serves as a consultant to hundreds of other colleges and universities. Sokolow is the author of ten books and more than fifty articles on student affairs law and policy topics. He is the Editor Emeritus of the Report on Campus Safety and Student Development. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Council on Law in Higher Education (CLHE). Mr. Sokolow serves on the Directorate Body of ACPA s Commission on Student Conduct and Legal Issues. He has recently co-authored, A Model Approach to Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment and he has coauthored an article for the Journal of College and University Law, College and University Liability for Violent Campus Attacks (April 2008). W. Scott Lewis, J.D. a partner with NCHERM. Formerly, he served as the Assistant Vice Provost for Judicial Affairs and Academic Integrity at the University of South Carolina, as well as the Chair of the Behavioral Intervention Team. He serves as adjunct faculty for the College of Business at USC. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and his Master of Science degree in Higher Education Administration from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. He received his Law degree from the University of Houston Law Center in Houston, Texas. Scott is a mediator, and has consulted in the areas of policy development

5 and review, procedural development and implementation, classroom management and judicial board training for over 10 years. John D. Byrnes is a trainer, author and lecturer. He became interested in the subject of aggression management after concluding that there were no comprehensive training programs dedicated to preventing aggression in the workplace. In 1993, he founded The Center for Aggression Management, headquartered in Lake Mary, Florida. Byrnes was selected by the US Department of Labor to represent the United States at the Violence as a Workplace Risk Conference held in Montreal, Canada, and has conducted seminars and workshops for some of our country s largest corporations, organizations and schools. Byrnes is the author of the book "Before Conflict, Preventing Aggressive Behavior," and has written articles for publications such as the Wall Street Journal, the LA Times, and the Denver Post, while also appearing on radio programs across the nation. William L. Kibler, Ph.D. serves as the Vice President for Student Affairs and Professor of Counselor Education at Mississippi State University. He has over thirty years of experience in student affairs administration, serving at the University of Florida, Texas A&M University, and Mississippi State. Dr. Kibler oversees the University Crisis Action Team and commands the Incident Command Center. He earned a bachelor s degree in economics and masters and specialist degrees in counselor education from the University of Florida, and a doctorate in educational administration from Texas A&M University. Carolyn Reinach Wolf, Esq. is Senior Partner, Mental Health Law, Hospital Litigation Practice at the Abrams law firm in Lake Success, NY. She received her B.A. with Honors, from the University of Maryland, an M.B.A. in Management from Hofstra University, an M.S. in Health Care Administration from the Harvard University School of Public Health, and her J.D. from Hofstra University School of Law. Ms. Reinach Wolf is affiliated with the Nassau County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, Association for Healthcare Risk Management of New York, Inc. (Board of Directors, President-elect), American Society of Law and Medicine, National Health Lawyers Association, National Association of College and University Attorneys, Metropolitan Health Administrators Association, and Health Care Executives Club. Ms. Reinach Wolf s law firm specializes in legal representation and consultation in the fields of mental health, healthcare, risk management, and college and university counseling centers. Ms. Reinach Wolf also writes and lectures extensively to all levels of mental health and healthcare professionals and attorneys specific to mental health and healthcare law. Saundra K. Schuster, Esq. Saundra K. Saunie Schuster serves as the General Counsel for Sinclair Community College and is an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio. She previously held the position of Senior Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio in the Higher Education Section, and as Associate General Counsel for the University of Toledo. Prior to practicing law, she served as the Associate Dean of Students at The Ohio State University. Ms. Schuster has over twenty-five years experience in college administration and teaching. She frequently presents nationally on legal issues in higher education. Ms. Schuster holds Masters degrees in counseling and higher education administration from Miami University,

6 completed her coursework for her Ph.D. at Ohio State University, and was awarded her juris doctorate degree from the Moritz College of Law, The Ohio State University. Brian Van Brunt, Ph.D. has worked in the counseling field for over fourteen years. He served as Director of Counseling at New England College from and currently serves as Director of Counseling and Testing at Western Kentucky University. He is a certified QPR suicide prevention trainer and trained in BASICS alcohol intervention. Brian is also a certified trainer in John Byrne's Aggression Management program. Brian has presented nationally on counseling ethics, mandated counseling, and testing and assessment for the American College Counseling Association (ACCA), Association of College and University Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD), American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and the National Association of Forensic Counselors (NAFC). He has taught graduate classes in counseling theory, ethics, testing and assessment and program evaluation. He completed his doctorate from Argosy University in Sarasota Florida (formerly the University of Sarasota) in counseling psychology, finished his masters degree from Salem State College in counseling and psychological services and received a bachelor s in psychology from Gordon College.
