2 Attending a private college has been very valuable to me. I love having smaller class sizes and being able to get to know everyone around school At a private college you re not just a name or a face in class, your professors actually want to be able to get to know who you are and they want to help you succeed in their class and for your future. 4 LETTER from the Board Chair and President There are over 76,000 reasons to be grateful this year. The Georgia Independent College Association (GICA) and our 26 member institutions are privileged to provide high-quality, affordable education to more than 76,000 diverse students. The private, not-for-profit higher education sector not only provides students with an educational choice, it also saves the State of Georgia tens of thousands of dollars for each student we educate. GICA and our member institutions are grateful to our legislators, donors and corporate partners for their support of the not-for-profit sector. The continued support of both federal and state student aid programs is vitally important to students wanting to choose an institution that best fits their educational, social and spiritual needs. We are indebted to the individuals, foundations and corporations supporting both GICA and the students our members serve. In 2013, GICA continued its efforts to form alliances and collaboratives aimed at creating further efficiencies and sharing resources and expertise. Sixteen of our member institutions are partnering with the state to better educate students regarding the transfer process through the Ga-TRACS program. GICA members are also participating in GA-AWARDS, the new state longitudinal data system designed to assist education policy researchers to better evaluate and create educational policies across Georgia. Seven of our members are participating with GICA in a Robert Woodruff Foundation research grant to explore issues related to low-income student degree completion. Additionally, all of our members are collaborating on their purchases to save money and participating in professional development opportunities through GICA. Within these pages, you will read more about the private, not-for-profit sector and the various ways GICA supports our member institutions. None of this would be possible without the continued support of our donors. Your support of our initiatives and to our scholarship programs is transformative. Sincerely, Dr. Dan McAlexander Board Chair, GICA President, LaGrange College Dr. Susanna L. Baxter President, GICA 4
