1 PROGRAM GUIDE Canadian Health Care Program #993 (2 Year Certificate) Many internationally trained health care professionals are interested in a study abroad experience that complements a career in the health sector and helps facilitate students who may want to explore a career in health care in Canada. This 2 year program helps expose internationally educated professionals to the Canadian Health Care System. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply for a three year post graduate work permit. IMPORTANT OVERVIEW This program is designed to provide a critical understanding of the important elements of the Health System in Canada, a cultural orientation to Canada and the language/communication requirements to be effective in a Canadian health care setting. Communication, problem solving and teamwork are part of every course in the program. A considerable amount of emphasis is dedicated to the development of effective communication skills as it is considered a critical skill requirement for transition to working effectively as a health care professional in Canada. A wide array of topics for includes: Federal and provincial government jurisdiction in health care, Funding in Canadian Health Care, Ethics and Values for health care professions in Canada Regulatory Practice and Health Care Professions in Canada Guest lectures from a variety of health professions Inter-professional team and collaborative practice in Canadian health care system The role of public and private sector health care providers. Autonomous practice evidence-based decision-making, clinical reasoning and problem solving. Computer fundamentals used in Canadian health care systems, Effective and Efficient use of resources in Canadian health care. Health Informatics covers fundamental skills required by health professionals to appropriately retrieve and document client health information using technology such as Meditech and Telehealth to support health care. Students attending this program come from a variety of health disciplines and may have similar long term plans to transition or bridge to a designated health care profession while considering settlement in Canada. This program does not offer employment, nor immigration, as this is outside the scope of our role as an institution. The chapters covered in the class have helped me to improve my writing and oral communication skills. I can see a different personality in myself. I noticed this change recently when I went for an interview. I got a very positive feedback regarding my communication skills. I got praised for understanding the Canadian Health System. Scany The JOURNEY Many health care students are interested in a study abroad experience that complements a career and getting a good job after graduation. Choosing the right course or program, is the first step in developing the Knowledge, Skills and Expertise as a skilled professional. This GUIDE references many of the areas you may need to consider, before making a decision to study abroad. At Mohawk, our goal is student
2 success and we want our students to be Futuready. We want you to be successful and accomplish your personal, educational, social and professional goals. Most importantly, as an outcome of this program, we will help you develop an individualized career plan to transition into a health care field within Canada. CAREER PLANNING Practical elements of career planning will be covered in this program as most health professionals will not be able to work in their area of specialization until they get their credentials recognized and obtain Permanent Resident status. As a result, many students will be seeking jobs to support their goals as they work towards employment in the health sector. One year s work experience will increase the number of points awarded for Canadian work experience and therefore increase the students total score in the pool. If immigration is an objective, it is important that a student understand the Express Entry protocol along with the rules and regulations that highlight qualifying employment opportunities. We suggest you contact a registered ICCRC immigration consultant for advice. (To compare the immigration objective under important overview) In addition, our program will include support and advice related to immigration consultation, as you move through the program and develop your individualized transition plan. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS This 2 year, certificate program, has 4 semesters, requiring applicants to have a degree or diploma in a health related field. A minimum English proficiency of 6.5 IELTS with a minimum of 6.0 in Speaking and writing is required. Communication skill development is also a key focus for this program and students will be expected to improve their level of proficiency in English by the end of this program. Effective communication is a critical component for health professionals in the Canadian context. It is wise to get a Police Clearance Certificate and an international drivers licence before you leave your home country. There are a number of Mohawk authorized study abroad agents that can assist you with your submissions contact our office to find an authorized agent nearest to you. Visa Applications must be clear and without error as it is easy to refuse a file that does not conform or meet requirements for studying abroad. Mohawk College course delivery uses an on-line learning platform elearn that adds learner flexibility to the learning experience. If you need help using elearn, visit our Support page. We will also support you in the development of online learning skills as part of our program of study because health care professionals in Canada are often required to participate in professional development activities using online technology. LOCATION: McMaster Campus, Hamilton, Ontario Great location: The program will be offered at Mohawk s Institute of Applied Health Sciences - IAHS at McMaster University Campus which is a scenic campus. The interior of the campus, which is open only to pedestrians and cyclists, is located at the western end of Lake Ontario in Hamilton, Canada. Nearby attractions include the Cootes Paradise Sanctuary, the Bruce Trail, the Niagara Escarpment, the Waterfront Trail, and the Royal Botanical Gardens. The IAHS campus is minutes from downtown Hamilton by bus, regional transportation systems, or automobile. The program will be offered at the same campus where all of our health science programs are taught, including Nursing, Pharmacy, OTA/PTA, Cardio-Vascular Technician programs. This program has helped me to understand Canadian culture and the health care skills required to
3 be successful in Canada. Another important point is to use your time wisely, actively participate in class, ask questions from teachers, clarify your doubts and be open minded. I would advise the new cohort to be punctual and check elearn daily because it is the integral part of education in Canada. I will also advise them to seek extra help for English as it is available for international students. In conclusion if you find yourself in a situation where you think you need a help, just ask for it from your professors and counsellors. Mom The real value of this location is that students will be able to interact with other students in various health disciplines as both Mohawk College and McMaster University health science programs are offered on the McMaster University Campus. Directions: This location provides students with an opportunity to network with people that have been on a similar journey in their past and may be able to share insight as to career options. Volunteering and networking is a very important aspect to get involved in the community. CREDENTIAL RECOGNITION Most health care professions require credential recognition. You will need your credentials assessed for Canadian equivalency by the various health care regulatory bodies in Canada. All health care professions have their own rules and regulations to practice in Canada and you will require a methodical approach to ensuring your credentials meet the requirements. Many professions are government regulated and your credentials will have to be recognized by the provincial and national bodies governing your area of practice. Often this will require additional coursework and qualifying exams to verify equivalency and obtain regulatory licence in Canada. Some of these courses are on-line and may be pursued concurrently. Some of these rules are changing and will require further research and investigation. Our program can help you develop an individualized transition plan to become a regulated health professional in Canada. PROGRAM COST The cost of tuition and fees for this two year, 4 semester program is estimated at $7,650 Canadian per semester, payable in four parts prior to the start of each semester. Fees are subject to change as approved by our Board of Directors. First Semester Tuition & Fees $ 7,650 (Includes Health Insurance, Bus Pass, ancillary fees and government taxes) Second Semester Tuition & Fees $ 7,650 Total program cost 1 st Year $ 15,300 Additional costs are: Books Approx. $900, incidentals $500, accommodation can range from $300 to $500 for shared accommodation and other incidental living expenses need to be estimated based on your family situation and lifestyle. My new course at Mohawk is very interesting and requires a lot of research. When I was working on one of my research papers this week, I remembered you and the way you taught us was really helpful and applicable now. We are required to use APA Referencing throughout our course. I feel blessed that I have already learned how to apply a thorough APA styling.
4 Thanks Prachi Our program is very cognizant of the language and communication skills required of health professionals including cross-cultural communication competency in health care. These skills are emphasized in throughout the curriculum. The meaning of therapeutic communication is explored by examining body language, tone, pronunciation, vocabulary, cultural behaviours and interactions within the health care team. Our program will simulate interprofessional communication opportunities to help graduates develop the essential communication skills required for effective health care provision in Canada. E-Health Understanding how to access web based health resources and various health software interfacing is a necessary skill set in today s health setting. Informatics, technology and being able to survive and thrive in this 'e' world is crucial to student success. The Informatics class offers skill development using Meditech, PointClickCare and Wix web site creation skills that render students so much more employable. P. Perrault EXPRESS ENTRY, IMMIGRATION & EMPLOYMENT It is important to note that immigration and employment are outside the scope of this program. Have a look at the rules defined by immigration as they often change: A two year program at Mohawk College often results in a three year post graduation work option which gives the student more time to seek qualifying employment under skill level O, A, or B. Immigration rules are complex and are part of the decision to study abroad. We suggest you talk to a registered immigration consultant to help weave you through the paperwork. Study the CIC web site in detail as a new Express Entry Invitation to Apply for PR requires due diligence. Getting your credentials recognized in Canada may require additional research as many disciplines require different procedures. Our program can help you develop a plan to transition into a health care profession, but additional course work is often required after this program is completed. DRAFT PROGRAM OF STUDIES (POS) At the time of this publication the POS was not finalized and is subject to change. Some classes will be mixed with other health disciplines offered at Mohawk to facilitate integration and perspective. A few pathway options will be considered for some health professions to facilitate discipline specific streaming (Prac. Nsg, PSW and Retail Pharm Assistant).
