Design for Environment as key element for anticipatory environmental protection Design Production Utilization Recycling The design defines the ecological performance at an early stage. Design for Environment However the actual environmental burden evolves from production, utilization and disposal. The impact of the production process and of the product on the environment have to be judged in advance and entirely considered within business decisions. Roadshow 6

Life Cycle Assessment: Integral Part of our DfE Strategy Areas for Application Vehicle level comparison of predecessor/ successor models comparison of alternative drive-systems and fuels System level comparison of different parts and materials comparison of production processes Roadshow 9
Life Cycle Assessment new C-Class New C-Class (C180) Predecessor model 2013 Predecessor model 2007 (reference) GWP 5% 0% -5% -10% Fuel consumption: 117gCO 2 /km; 5,0l/100km 136gCO 2 /km; 5,8l/100km 177gCO 2 /km; 7,4l/100km Primary energy consumption -15% -20% -25% -30% Acidification potential (AP) Environmental impact of new C-Class compared with its predecessor market entry/-exit, entire life cycle (mileage 200,000 km). Photochemical oxidation potential (POCP, summer smog) Eutrophication potential (EP) Roadshow 10
Life Cycle Assessment: Alternative propulsion systems smart electric drive versus gasoline Closing the loops Renewable energy Over the entire life cycle contributions to the greenhouse effect made by the smart electric drive with renewable energy is almost 60 percent less than the smart gasoline. Roadshow 11
Lightweight construction Life Cycle Assessment of component manufacturing GWP [kg CO 2eq./ kg component] challenge Comparison of material- and component manufacturing (functional unit : 1 kg steel component) technology progress higher energy efficency use of secondary material higher process efficiency use of renewable energy today Primary energy consumption [MJ/kg component] CFK Pultrusion CFK RTM Aluminium cast Aluminium sheet Magnesium Pidgeon Magnesium electrolysis Steel sheet ø Lightweigt potential vs. steel (reference): Al 30%, Mg 40% CFK 50% Steel: Only small improvements are expected for future scenarios. Overall, the lowest effort for the production - despite extra weight. Aluminium: Reducing energy consumption in electrolysis (scenario "trend ) is compensated by higher import mix especially from China. Use of renewable energy results in a significant leap in the Life Cycle Assessment into the direction of steel. Magnesium: Significant difference between today's Pidgeon-process (thermal energy) and electrolysis. CFK: Significant improvement with hydroelectric power and optimized production processes. Roadshow 12
Resource consumption and implications The world wide production of raw materials has increased during the last 100 years by the factor 5 to Resource efficiency % World production Weltprodukstandardized on normiert (auf to 1910) % 1000% 100% Iron ore Steel Eisenerz Stahl Aluminum Aluminium Bauxit Bauxit Kupfer Copper Seltene Erden (gesamt) Rare Earths Silizium PlaSilica ngruppenmetalle Platin Group Metals Source: 10% Jahr Source: Wikipedia Clear need to enhance resource efficiency Roadshow 13
