Arctic Fibre Submarine Cable System Desktop Study & Cable Engineering 10 February 2012
Desktop Study: Phase 1 Scope Philosophy March 7, 2012
DTS Phase 1 Scope of Work Goal: Identify feasible marine survey route and submarine cable segment for Phase 1 DTS will investigate: Landing sites Physical, political, cultural risks Schedule risks Possible impacts to survey, installation & maintenance
DTS TE SubCom Approach Iqaluit, Canada Segment 1 Generate Initial Route: Segment 2: BU1 Stub Utilizing current planning route Segment 3 Segment 5.1 Segment 4: BU2 Stub BU5 Stub: Optional Review nautical charts and available bathymetric Segment to Nain data Review maritime boundaries and permit requirements Avoid adverse seabed conditions Avoid heavily fished areas Provide adequate separation from other cables Segment 5.2 Position Branching Units & Final Splices in benign areas Select initial armor types Arctic Fibre Cable System Milton, Canada
DTS TE SubCom Approach Review Archival Data: Geography Geology Oceanography Meteorology Biology Environmental Issues Offshore Mineral, Oil & Gas Activities Shipping and Anchoring Fishing Activities Wrecks & Hazards Restricted Areas Military Activities Territorial Limits Permitting Requirements Regional Cable Systems Cable Fault Histories Local Resources Recreational Activities Landing Sites
DTS TE SubCom Approach Desktop Studies should focus on factors that directly impact the planning, installation, and maintenance of the proposed cable system. Hazard identification (HAZID) Process: Hazard analysis Review of hazards versus existing industry survey & installation techniques Engineering or procedural recommendation Discuss schedule impacts All disciplines within TE SubCom support the HAZID effort, including but not limited to: Permitting, Marine Liaison (fisheries and AIS analysis), Route Survey, Installation (Main Lay and Shore Ends).
DTS TE SubCom Approach Final Report should provide: Standard overview of geologic, oceanographic, meteorological, political, and cultural environment Route Position List & System Line Diagram for survey and construction planning purposes Initial Hazard Identification providing possible cable engineering, schedule, installation, or maintenance impacts Recommendations for implementing the project
Cable Engineering Known Risks Current Route Planning Implementation Considerations March 7, 2012
DTS Cable Engineering Known Risks or Hazards: Several risks are known at this time: Icebergs, bergy bits, and growlers Iceberg scouring Landfast ice Rocky seabed conditions Currents Possible fishing activities Possible harbor planning Additional risks may be identified once the DTS activities have begun.
Phase 1 Cable Engineering Milton Iqaluit: 2,463 km total 1,507 km surface lay 956 km burial (39%) 1,022 km armored cable 1,441 km unarmored cable Single main lay load 2 x Pre-Laid Shore Ends
Arctic Fibre Phase 1 Route Overview Cable out of both landings take direct route to deep water to reduce burial, armor, and minimize exposure to external aggression. Iqaluit, Nunavut Seg1 Seg3 Seg2: BU1 Stub Seg5.1 Seg4: BU2 Stub BU5 Stub: Optional Segment to Nain Seg5.2 Arctic Fibre Cable System Milton, Newfoundland
Phase 1 Cable Engineering Milton nearshore approach protected from iceberg scouring by a shallow bank (<100m WD) to the north of the route. Shallow areas inaccessible to main lay vessel
Phase 1 Cable Engineering Iqaluit nearshore approach protected by southern facing bay minimizing iceberg entry risk Shallow areas inaccessible to main lay vessel Possible Harbor Expansion
Phase 1 Implementation Considerations Engineering Cable protection nearshore (HDD, articulated pipe, burial requirements) BU & final bight placement (currents, ice) Survey Ice extents for smallboat operations Ice flows for main vessel operations Survey vessel class and insurance constraints Shore End Ice extents for installation timing Permafrost constraints for construction efforts Vessel requirements, heavy equipment availability Main Lay Installation Ice flows for lay operations
DTS TE SubCom Approach Generate Initial RPL Review Archival Data Perform HAZID Update RPL/SLD Final Charts Highlight Issues / Generate Recommendations Final Report
