1 Content Management Plans for A Short Survey on CMS and CMIS RESULTS February GENERIS info@generiscorp.com

2 Content Management Plans for Introduction We decided to follow up on our survey on CMS plans and see how things may have changed since then. We launched a short survey on plans for Content Management in, and 65 companies responded from a variety of industries. These are the results - we do not claim they are more than a smallsample indication of some industry trends. Some raw data is available at the end of this report. Our conclusions are our own, although we hope we have avoided mistakes in analyzing the data! Question 1 What current ECM platform(s) does your company use? reduce the number of platforms that they have. We did not collect data on which platforms were to be added or removed - something for our 2013 survey! Question 3 Reduce platforms Add new platforms Move to common platform Stay as is For any ECM projects planned during, what is the focus? Also, a majority of respondents selected more than one response as companies clearly have multiple CMS systems in place today. Among the Other category were listed eroom, Cindoc, SDL Drupal and Typo3. Question 2 Are you looking to merge / move / reduce / expand ECM platforms in? More good news for, perhaps in line with some improvements in the global economy (or companies having put off work as long as possible) a smaller proportion than last year are not planning any CMS projects at all. For those who are planning projects, the focus on upgrades / new systems outstripped migrations, which were more prominent last year. Question 4 Have you heard of / worked with CMIS (Content Management Interoperability Services) yet? Overwhelmingly, companies are still looking to stay as is - and since almost every respondent specified more than one in-house platform, that means the trend of having multiple-platforms looks set to continue. shows far less planning to add new platforms, though - by contrast some companies are actively looking to COMPANY Knowledge of these standards seems fairly well established, down a little from but not significantly: Yes: 72% (77% in ) No: 28% (23% in )

3 Question 5 How important do you think CMIS and a common access to multiple repositories will be for your company during? Interestingly, out of all 15 requirements, the same top 5 came up in as almost identically important: Workflow capabilities What can we say - the results this year were identical to last year. CMIS is somewhere between being a moderate factor and major factor / essential. We developed Questions 6 and 7 to work as a pair, so we analyzed the results together. Here are some summary points and conclusions. Unlike last year, we are including the raw data at the end of this report so you can perform your own analysis. Out of all the aspects listed, the one that stood out as Critical was Security Model (63%). Beyond that, taking Critical and High together, these are the top 5 features, and how companies felt their existing CMS platforms scored on those: Feature Critical / High requirement Existing system: Excellent Existing system: Excellent / high Usability and UI 91% 6% 40% Performance 91% 6% 46% Security model 91% 29% 69% Configurability 83% 26% 49% Workflow capabilities 74% 54% 54% Apart from Security, most companies feel their CMS platforms perform pretty poorly on these counts. In our experience, Usability / UI and Performance are two of the most critical factors in user acceptance and therefore ROI on such systems, and the results are really no improvement on. This might be a key area for CMS platform vendors to really focus their development efforts in. Usability and UI 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 100% and with almost identically poor evaluation on the abilities of the current CMS to handle them: Workflow capabilities Configurability Security model Performance Usability and UI 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 100% The brand name of the CMS vendor was rated as Medium priority, although people rated the brand of their CMS as Medium - Excellent. Social media integration (wikis, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) were once again rated as relatively unimportant, although more respondents this year felt their CMS systems performed well here. and MS Office integration was felt to be of High importance (51% and 60% respectively) - the majority of respondents went for Medium / High scoring in this area so this appears to be something CMS vendors are getting right. Records Management climbed slightly in importance in (68% high/critical vs. 61%). Giving third parties access and integrating with other ECM systems did not seem, surprisingly, as important as we sometimes hear from customers. Thanks to all those who took part in the survey, and we hope the results provide some useful insight into trends among respondents for. We look forward to seeing how next year s responses compare!
