3 Welcome Note Welcome to the first edition of The Gulf Intelligence Women in Energy Summit, held in association with The Qatari Businesswomen Association. It is with great pleasure and anticipation, and immense honor that I have the opportunity to welcome such a distinguished group of speakers and delegates to this event, which I hope will become a perennial date on the regional energy industry s calendar.without a doubt, women in Qatar have come a long way since the country s independence in Women play important roles and make positive contributions to all aspects of life in the Gulf state, including in economic, social and political activities. Today, females don t just make up the majority of university students in Qatar; they are also graduating in ever-larger numbers in traditionally male-dominated subjects such as engineering and sciences. And rising numbers of females are entering Qatar s oil and gas industry to take on positions previously held exclusively by males. By any standard, these are tremendous achievements; yet more needs to be done. Female graduates may outnumber their male counterparts but fewer women than men end up participating in the national workforce. As Qatar pursues its national strategy of becoming a sustainable, knowledge-based economy driven by innovation, technology and research and development, it will be vital to ensure that Qatari women find equal opportunities in the local labor market, including in sectors such as oil and gas.this is of particular importance at a time when the global energy industry is confronted with a multitude of challenges ranging from having to improve efficiencies and adapt to new technologies such as big data to the need to access increasingly complex and remote reservoirs to having to plug a widening skills gap in oil and gas. Women will be needed and have the skills and ambition to play a central role in tackling these challenges, both on a local and on an international level. These, and other topics, will feature high on the Women in Energy Summit s agenda. I hope you will find that today s event will produce stimulating and thought-provoking lectures and debates, and will prove to be a platform of true knowledge exchange and a unique networking opportunity. With this in mind, I would like to wish you a successful day. Gulf Intelligence facilitates knowledge exchange between stakeholders. 13 Knowledge Exchange Breakout Sessions B1 Session: Hosted by ExxonMobil Technology: Clearing the Path for Women to Work in Technical fields? While the numbers of women working in the energy industry are still small, there appears to be consensus that there are few, if any, limitations on the type of jobs female employees can perform in the energy sector today. This is partially due to technological advances. Over the past decade, the industry has seen the widespread application of new technologies such as computer-assisted exploration and remote drilling that help increase operating efficiencies and boost productivity, profitability and safety and can be performed from onshore locations. The application of new technologies has been a trigger for greater diversification within the energy industry s workforce already as a new breed of engineers with backgrounds in information technology (IT) and computer sciences are increasingly in high demand. This in turn is also providing new opportunities for women to enter the energy sector. Featured Speakers Session Host: Dr. Jennifer Dupont, Research Director, ExxonMobil Research Qatar n Jeanette Forbes, CEO, PCL Group Moderator: Sean Evers, Gulf Intelligence B2 Session: Hosted by Maersk Oil Qatar Global Talent Shortage Closing the Gap with National Women? There can be little doubt that women have seen their career prospects in the energy industry improve over the past two decades and an increasing number of females are taking advantage of the opportunities available. Going forward, bolstering the female component in the oil and gas industry s workforce has the potential to go some way alleviating the existing talent gap, which is widening as a rising number of experienced engineers is retiring. This is certainly true in the Gulf and the UAE, where the majority of engineering students today are females. But more needs to be done to sustain a continuous and growing flow of females into the energy sector. This includes addressing the challenges and obstacles women may encounter in a male-dominated environment, in particular out in the field, on a day-to-day basis. Also, companies need to focus on introducing better work-life balance policies that allow flexible working hours and shared maternity leave between parents, as well as improving childcare facilities. Featured Speakers Session Host: Nathalie Rush, Head of Human Resources, Maersk Oil Qatar n Mishael Al Ansari, Board Member, Qatari Businesswomen Association n Dr. Todd Kent, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Texas A&M University at Qatar n Abdulla Al Mansoori, Director, Qatar Career Fair Moderator: Kate Dourian, MEES Dubai 11
14 Knowledge Exchange Breakout Sessions B3 Session: Hosted by ConocoPhillips Generation Y Meets Baby Boomers in the 21st Century Oil Industry An Opportunity for Female Professionals? At a time when the oil and gas industry is undergoing a period of deep change driven by the development and advancement of technologies such as horizontal drilling, it is also faced with the challenge of having to transfer key skills and knowledge from the many experts who are expected to retire in coming years to a new, less experienced generation of professionals. Commonly referred to as the great crew change, the Baby Boomer generation of engineers, technicians and geologists who were trained during the last oil boom that lasted from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s are gradually being replaced by a new workforce comprised of recent college graduates, who are all members of Generation Y. The divide between the two generations goes much deeper than purely a difference in age, however. These two generations grew up in very different times, which have imbedded in them diverse ways of thinking, learning, and working. Tech-savvy like no generation before, Generation Y is in constant movement and used to a fast-paced live and decision making, while also pursuing a different vision of work-life balance compared with the Baby Boomers. These differences can create friction if members of both generations maintain a mentality that their methods and ethics are always the right ones. How much of a challenge is the generational gap in today s day-to-day work environment in the oil industry? Featured Speakers Session Host: Sarah Mroueh, Communications & Public Affairs Specialist, ConocoPhillips Qatar n Katharina Gruenberg, Chair, Youth Committee, World Petroleum Council n Nawal Al-Fezai, OPEC Governor, Kuwait n Shirley Carroll, Associate Vice President, College of North Atlantic Qatar Moderator: Dyala Sabbagh, Gulf Intelligence B4 Session: Hosted by Gulf Intelligence How Will Correcting the Gender Imbalance Change the Energy Industry? The gender imbalance in the energy industry has been present for decades, but with a whole generation of experienced engineers set to retire over the next 10 years and the number of new entrants limited, building a diverse workforce that includes more women isn t simply a choice; it s essential if the energy industry is to meet the challenges that lie ahead whether on a global level or in oil and gas rich countries such as Qatar. At present, women still represent a small share of the oil industry s workforce and even fewer hold engineering or other technical positions. In the U.K., for example, women account for 51 percent of the population but only 8 percent of engineering professionals, according to a recent analysis from the Royal Academy of Engineering. While the numbers vary from country to country, the overall trend, however, appears to be slowly changing, with the number of women entering the industry constantly growing. Featured Speakers n Lady Barbara Judge CBE, Member of the UAE Advisory Board for the Development of Peaceful Nuclear Energy n Carolin Zeitler, Founder & CEO, Tataowar Moderator: Sindhu Nair, Qatar Today 12
15 Knowledge Exchange Series D1 Session: PR/Communications: (The Only?) Entry Point for Women to High-Level Corporate Positions in the Oil Industry Women are widely represented in the oil industry s PR and communications departments today. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, females make up 63 percent of public relations specialists in the oil industry and 59 percent of all PR managers globally. This stands in stark contrast to the industry s overall female participation. At present, women still represent only a small share of the oil industry s workforce and even fewer hold engineering or other technical positions. A survey conducted by the Centre for International Labor Market Studies shows that female workers make up just 4 percent of the total oil and gas workforce in the U.K. for example. As a result, oil and gas companies top decision makers today still are almost exclusively males. Against this backdrop it appears that PR and communications may be the oil industries only or most promising entry point for women seeking to climb the corporate ladder to the top. Featured Speakers n Dr. Shaukat Chandna, Managing Director, Qatar Center for Career Development n Christina Paschyn, Journalist and Lecturer at Northwestern University, Qatar Moderator: Gulf Intelligence D2 Session: Clean Energy: Drawing more females into its fold? The oil industry has always been a male domain. Continuous efforts are being made to replace the traditional hard-hat-wearing-man with women climbing high on rigs. But while there has been some success in attracting more women into the oil industry, over the last two years, an average of only 21 percent of women contributed to its workforce globally.
