SCHOOL DISTRICT OF SHEBOYGAN FALLS ADMINISTRATION Jean Born District Administrator Mary Blaha Director of Business Services Ann Roy Special Education Director Luke Goral High School Principal Aaron May Associate High School Principal Lynn Bub Elementary School Principal Meloney Markofski Middle School Principal
JOB DESCRIPTION FOR SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS The philosophy of the Sheboygan Falls Public School System stresses a primary concern for helping each student acquire necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes in order to help him/her reach maximum potential. This involves providing an educational program which is sufficiently broad and varied in order to meet an individual s needs, so as to be able to succeed in a rapidly changing society. A substitute teacher has the important and challenging task of insuring continuity of instruction in the classroom this can be done more effectively if there is an understanding of the responsibilities and interrelationships between the substitute teacher and the school. This manual is intended as a guide for those who are called to serve as substitutes in the Sheboygan Falls Public School System. A. INITIAL STEPS Substitute teachers are urged to meet with the school s principal to become familiar with the school and its classroom procedures. In addition, those who are interested in serving as substitutes are required to: 1. Secure certification to teach in Wisconsin. A copy of this certificate is to be filed in the School District Office, 220 Amherst Avenue, Sheboygan Falls, WI Complete the necessary employment forms and submit them to the District office. B. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SUBSTITUTE TEACHER The Sheboygan Falls School District uses an automated service for finding and managing substitute jobs in the district. This service, called Aesop, utilizes both the telephone and the internet to assist you in locating jobs. You will receive a letter in the mail with an ID number and a PIN number to access the Aesop system. 1. Become familiar with the school s procedures and its general curriculum. You may wish to talk with the building principal before accepting substitute work to gain this information. 2. Report to the office upon arrival at the building and be present at the school in accord with its operational hours of 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. 3. Follow lesson plans for classroom activities and procedures left by the regular teacher as closely as possible. 4
4. Assume the duties of the regular teacher which may include corridor and restroom supervision, collection of monies, lunch period supervision, playground supervision, securing supplies, fire drill procedures, etc. 5. Seek guidance from the principal or associate principal in any unusual situation and notify him/her immediately in the event of an accident, severe problem or serious disturbance. 6. Maintain a proper classroom environment conducive to learning. 7. Make sure all students are safely evacuated out of the classroom during a fire or storm warning drill. 8. Leave student assignments and the classroom in order at the end of the school day. 9. Leave a note of explanation as to what occurred during the day. 10. Check out with the school office and ask if help will be needed the next day. 11. Attend faculty meetings and PTA meetings if the assignment is on a long-term basis (after three weeks). 12. Treat any information about the school and its students as confidential. 13. Report any illness, injuries, or accidents you have encountered with your students to the school office or the school nurse. 14. Return the room key to the office before leaving your last afternoon class. HIGH SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITIES: You will be asked to call the regular classroom teacher when you arrive at school to determine the daily teaching plans. ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITIES: You will be asked to utilize the information provided in the Emergency Folder and from the weekly lesson plans. Additional information can be obtained through phone contact with the regular classroom teacher, if needed. You will be asked to complete daily evaluation forms at the end of the substitute day. C. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PRINCIPAL 5
Each Sheboygan Falls School Administrator has a copy of the list of substitutes with preferences concerning grade levels and subjects. The substitute will be called at the earliest possible moment and be provided necessary information. Calls to persons on the substitute list will be made by a designated District Administrative Assistant. 1. Welcome the substitute and give information concerning program, policies, and procedures of the school. 2. Provide schedules of building routines and regulations as well as special assignments of the teacher and information concerning unusual situations in the classroom. 3. Help the substitute become acquainted with staff, classroom, and students. 4. Explain disciplinary procedures and give support in this area. 5. Give assurance of willingness to assist with any problems. 6. Express appreciation for co-operation and achievements of the substitutes. HIGH SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist the substitute in contacting the regular classroom teacher to determine the daily teaching plans. ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide the substitute with an emergency folder containing the regular teacher s assignments, duties, class list, an emergency lesson plan, etc. Provide daily evaluation forms to be completed at the end of the substitute day D. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE REGULAR TEACHER The classroom teacher should be prepared for another teacher to carry on in their place in case of illness or emergency. The teacher has the responsibility to: 1. Have in or on their desk: a) lesson plans for the day made out in sufficient detail. b) detailed weekly time schedule of classes (preferably fastened in the lesson plan book). c) list of student s names and seating chart. 6
d) lists of supervisory duties, etc. of the regular teacher. e) important information about any student - (physical disabilities, discipline problems, reliable helpers, etc.). f) fire drill and emergency procedures. 2. Have available teacher s copies of textbooks and workbooks used in the classroom. 3. Be available by phone, when possible, to answer questions or assist in any other way. Any teacher, especially those in the same department or nearby classrooms, should be willing to assist the substitute in any possible way. The success of the substitute teacher in carrying on the continuing educational process in the Sheboygan Falls School District depends primarily upon the principal, the regular teacher and above all, upon the individual substitute. When all cooperate to achieve and develop continuity, an effective school program for all students will be maintained. E. SALARY AND PAY PERIODS FOR SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS 1. Substitute teachers shall be paid as follows: a) The daily rate shall be set on a periodic basis by the Board of Education. Substitutes will be informed as the rates are adjusted. b) After twenty (20) consecutive days of teaching in the same position, the substitute teacher shall be paid $23.33 per hour. The rate of $23.33 per hour will be paid retroactively to day one of the subbing assignment. 2. High School substitutes may be called upon to substitute in additional classes during their professional period and preparation period, if needed. If this situation occurs, the one additional period will be pro-rated based upon the daily substitute pay. 3. The substitute teacher will be paid on the 15th of the month following each month during which he/she has taught. 4. All employees of the school district are paid through a direct deposit system. The name of your bank, savings & loan, or credit union and a checking or savings account number must be given to the payroll department prior to receiving your first check. The School District of Sheboygan Falls conducts a criminal records background check on all new employees. A form will be provided to obtain needed information as part of initial employment. 7
5. Required deductions will be made for federal withholding tax, state withholding tax, social security, and any other deductions as specified by Federal and State authorities. 6. Should an injury be suffered while on the job, the substitute teacher is covered under Worker s Compensation. The injury should be reported at once, and an accident report filed with the school office and Business Manager. s:\forms\subhand.doc 8
