Department of Graphic Design 25.5 linear feet The records consist of student degree projects, portfolios, and other student work created for the Graphic Design department. English Collection number: Scope & content Organized by academic year and arranged alphabetically by student, the files may include project abstracts or thesis statements, CV's, reports, examples of a student's class work, and publications. Slides dominate the collection. Other media used by the students include negatives, VHS, CDs, floppies, and zip disks. Computer media were created on the Macintosh platform. Most files from the 1990s contain a CV, a degree project abstract, and a collection of slides illustrating the student's work produced during his/her academic career. Files after 2004 contain only a CD or DVD. Though organized by the year, the date does not necessarily represent a student's graduation year. The Archives maintains a searchable database containing the student's name, date, title of degree project (if any), existence of a written statement, slides, and other media, and the number of slides. There are 27,355 slides in the collection from 1974 to Arrangement The records are organized into one series: I. Student work,
3 Page 3 of 5 Historical note Created in 1958, the Graphic Design Department evolved from advertising design evening classes first taught in 1921 as part of the Decorative Design Department curriculum. RISD began a four-year Commercial Design course within the Day School in 1930, which dealt "directly with Art in Advertising and Printing." RISD organized a separate Graphic Arts Department in 1933 that became part of the Fine Arts Division, Reorganized as Advertising and Industrial Design in 1943, the two courses split into separate departments under the Division of Product Development, Advertising Design included the Fashion Illustration course, Returned to Fine Arts in 1952, the department, influenced by the work of John Howard Benson, underwent a pedagogical shift during the 1950s from its commercial advertising artist roots toward printing, lettering, and typography. Faculty members including Alexander Nesbitt, George Pappas, and Malcolm Grear transformed the curriculum into the present Graphic Design Department. Harry Callahan, who created the Photography Department from within Graphic Design beginning in 1961, strongly influenced the development of the new curriculum. RISD began a two-year graduate program in 1976 and introduced a five-year BGD program in Moved to the Division of Design in 1963, Graphic Design became part of the Division of Architectural Studies and Design in Access & use Access to the collection: Use of materials: Preferred citation: Contact information: The use of certain documents and collections may be restricted.
