2 Future Energy Mix Improved Livelihoods: Energy is the limigng factor for improving livelihoods. Current forms of energy for cooking, running farm machineries are unsustainable. Understanding the energy and agricultural producgon linkages, buffering communiges against climate change shocks. InnovaGve energy mix need to be developed. Improved Women Health: WHO esgmates that indoor air pollugon in houses contributed 1.6 million addigons, deaths per year worldwide, which was equivalent to 3% of the world s disease burden. Energy access and Food Security: To feed the populagon of 9 Billion people by 2050, the food producgon needs to increase by 70%. ProducGve agriculture has become dependent on energy and requires energy inputs at almost all stages in the form of farm machinery, water management, irrigagon, culgvagon and harvesgng. Electricity generated out of biomass and liquid biofuels have the potengal to address this very effecgvely.
3 Our Working Hypothesis Food vs fuel: A false dichotomy The choice cannot be between food and fuel. We can make good use of both. Biofuels, if produced sustainably, can be an effecgve means to increase food security by providing poor farmers with a sustainable and affordable energy source. IdenGfying the right balance needs harnessing our collecgve knowledge that includes smallholder farmers and aims at reducing poverty.
4 ROAD MAP 27% of transport energy needs worldwide could be met with biofuels by 2050, saving a cumulagve 20 billion tonnes (Gt) of carbon dioxide emissions over the next 40 years all without affecgng food security. By 2050, the roadmap assumes 32 exajoules of biofuel producgon, split 50:50 between crop-based and waste-based fuels, and that the crops will require 70 million hectares (Mha) of land to grow. How to get 70 Mha of land carbon free?. 70 Mha is more than the area of Germany and Poland together.
5 Where can they come from? AGROFORESTRY Agriculture Forestry Nearly a billion hectares of agricultural landscapes already have more than 10% tree cover and 1.6 billion hectares of land worldwide has the potengal to be under agroforestry (Nair and Garrity, 2012).
