Outline TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 2
Characteristics of Evolving Networks! Proliferation of Terminals, Access methods, Networks, Telecom and Internet Services TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 3
Characteristics of Evolving Networks! Terminals and Access Networks:! The 4G network envisages multiple, heterogeneous Access Networks with mechanisms for seamless access to an IP Core.! Convergence takes the form of interworking mechanisms to give seamless roaming rather than merging of actual Access Networks! Core Network Types:! Managed Multiservice Networks supporting both realtime and information services with QoS are required for Next Generation Networks! Managed IP Networks use both QoS mechanism (DiffServ) and Virtual Circuit Switching (MPLS) TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 4
Characteristics of Evolving Networks! Evolution of Service Architectures:! A Service Architecture is an arrangement of computing elements, control logic, data and communications protocols intended to support a Service or Category of Service! PSTN did not succeed on the evolution of ISDN! Packet Networks and Internet Standards provide integration of Computers and Telephony! IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is part of 3G! 3GPP standards evolved out of the GSM 2G! 3GPP2 standards aimed directly to All-IP, where all IP means using standards of the IETF! ETSI s TISPAN to harmonise NGN and 4G TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 5
Convergence! Fixed-mobile: future distinctions will be between types of mobility in a single network: user, terminal and service.! Telecom-Internet: related to infrastructure, regulatory and business model convergence.! Services and applications: telecom, computing, information, entertainment and broadcasting.! Technology and Infrastructure: common switching and transmission! Business models: can depart from the binary telco-isp form! Regulatory framework: traditionally separate! Body of knowledge and practice. TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 6
Features of Convergence! Multiservice: Multiple services, new or formerly separate, are supported on single set of facilities! Multifunction: Multiple services are supported on a single terminal! Interworking: Facilities interwork to perform or extend functions! Versatility: The same service or content can be delivered by different types of infrastructures or media:! Composition of services or content: exploiting multiple services (content types) for more powerful services (complex content)! Points of integration: diverse equipments can work into a single, common standard interface to supporting facilities.! Layering: More than abstractions give separations for business and regulation! Technology neutrality: designing applications independent of implementation technology - allows multi-platform incarnations. TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 7
Dealing with Complexity! The Telecommunications Network is the largest system man has ever made! With convergence of Telecommunications and Information Technologies, the system gets larger and more complex! We deal with the complexity by one or more of the methods:! Classical 7-layered Protocol Models! Using Physical and Functional Abstractions! Using network and software Layering Methods! Identifying Domains and Business roles TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 8
Modelling & Abstracting the NGN Framework! The NGN Framework is concerned with the Building Blocs of an Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) system! Physical Entity Abstraction: Presents an abstract view of the network showing:! physical entities, drawn from an agreed list! connections! protocols.! Functional Entity Abstraction: Presents an abstract view the network showing! functional entities, drawn from an agreed list! application layer protocols, possibly abstracted TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 9
Modelling & Abstracting the NGN Framework TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 10
Modelling & Abstracting the NGN Framework! The NGN Framework is concerned with the Structure of an Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) system! Structure Classifiers within the framework! Layers: separations of functions that have a clientserver relationship! Domains: grouping of technical functions, business interests or regulatory concerns! Planes: capture a particular concern that curs across layers or domains TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 11
