IPTV is a typical component of 3Play offers TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 11
! On-Network Mobile TV methods Contents are delivered on the same Access Network of the Mobile Terminals. Most current systems are over 3G (EV-DO, UMTS) Contents of short duration (~2 minutes) video clips are streamed to the terminals. Some networks already provide longer duration broadcast )News Meteorology, Sports...etc.! Off-Network New methods for delivery of Mobile TV service are currently under development (with some live tests), providing larger number of content choices/channels, higher resolutions, etc. : With specialized chip for signal decoding Using the mobile network radio channels for program selection and control TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 12
Mobile TV technologies! Current Off-Network Mobile TV technologies: MediaFLO Proprietary Overlay technology (based on OFDM) Dedicated radio spectrum of 6 MHz, allowing 6 Mbps No capacity problems (downstream broadcast only) Radio stations reach a coverage radius range of ~50 Km DVB-H (Hand-held) Extension of the DVB-T standard ISDB-T (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting) Technology based on OFDM in 6, 7 or 8 MHz Uses MPEG 2 and supports HDTV, SDTV etc. IP Wireless A TD-CDMA technology (3GPP standard) Uses 5 MHz of unpaired spectrum for 50 SDTV channels de or 15 HTDV channels TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 13
Content Distribution Services! Traditional content distribution:! Online distribution of software, music, movies, etc! Downloads from centralized servers are prone to performance bottlenecks! Distribution methods for performance gains:! Content Suppliers: Replication, with sites distributed on the Internet! Content Consumers: Use of Caching to minimize Bandwidth! By third parties: Content Distribution Networks (CDN) TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 14
CDN Content Distribution Network! CDN is a Service their customers are the content providers! A CDN company installs servers on the Internet and customers contract their services when content provider updates contents, the CDN updates its servers. TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 15
Specialized Service Platforms! Mobile Shop - online purchase and download of Applications, Ring Tones, Music, Movies, Games, etc.! Push-To-Talk (PTT) Instant Group Voice Communications, like walkie-talkie.! Location Based Service (LBS) provides georeferenced information with precision that can be close to 1 meter. TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 16
Specialized Communications! M2M (Machine-to-Machine):! Tele-Surveillance - fixed or mobile surveillance (may include video)! Telemetry, Tele-Control - for remote metering and control of devices.! Emergency and Medical Monitoring! Mobile Commerce - Point-of Sales, Express Courrier, Remote Maintenance/Assistance.! Fleet Management - Transportation, Parcel Delivery, HealthCare, Security, Sales, etc. TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 17
Implications for Regulation! Convergence is not a clear-cut phenomenon! But many cases of pairs of things coming together exist! Regulatory environment needs changing! From vertical to horizontal! What does the framework tell us about how to approach regulation? TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 18
Changing Regulatory Models TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 19
