2 COJEMS Training Academy City of Johannesburg MEDICAL TRAINING PROSPECTUS The Academy Of The Emergency Services have undertaken to ensure high level training where the mission is to create competitive standards in both the National and International setting, where the outcome result in world accepted levels of competence. 1. Registered Programmes: Basic Ambulance Assistant Course (BAA) Basic Ambulance Assistant Refresher Course Ambulance Emergency Assistant Course (AEA) Ambulance Emergency Assistant Refresher Course BLS for Healthcare Provider Course 1.1 FUTURE PROGRAMMES National Diploma: Emergency Care Technician Course (ECT) Aviation Healthcare Provider Course (AHCP) Advanced Life Support Refresher Course 2. Accreditation Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) University of Johannesburg 3. 3 3.2 Bookings (Internal applications) Course bookings are conducted through the Skills Development Officer representing the City Of Johannesburg Training Academy. Bookings are scheduled in accordance with the completed skill audit conducted for the relevant year. All completed skills audit forms to be forwarded to: Skills development Officer Florida Park Cnr Ontdekkers Avenue and Gold Club Terrace Roodepoort City Of Johannesburg Tel: Cancellation Training fees already paid are not refundable, whatever the reason. 4. Venue All courses will be conducted at one of the following venues: Medical Training Academy Florida Park 5. Dress The appropriate level of Personal Protective Equipment required is as per course specification. 6. Starting time All courses offered are scheduled to commence at 07:30. Experiential learning commences in line with each individual course requirements. 7. Lunch It is the responsibility of each learner to supply own lunch. Refreshments are provided for commercial training programmes only. 8. Programme fees Programme fees are determined as specified in the Government Gazette/Departmental costing procedure. Programme cost is available on request from the Academy. Courses will only be booked once proof of full payment is received. 2
4 The Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA) course will only be booked and learners will only be accepted once 50% of course fees have been paid. Certification will only be done once full payment is received. 9. Certificates Certificates will only be issued once a learner is certified as Competent in accordance with HPCSA/SAQA standards and requirements. 10. Programme application closing dates Programmes will be scheduled in accordance with the guidelines stipulates by the HPCSA. The period allowed for Academy readiness is no less than five working days. Note: Late bookings may be considered subject to availability of space. 11. Entry Requirements Abet level 4 requirement is essential for all learners wishing to take part in the Basic Ambulance Assistant Course. All other course as per the requirements stipulated by the HPCSA. All courses are conducted in English. Learner should be able to read and write. Due to the nature of the Emergency Medical Services, all candidates are required to be both medically and physically fit. 3

6 Medical Training Programs 1. Basic Ambulance Assistant Course (BAA) 1.1. Target population Employees within City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services Selection criteria This programme is designed as an entry-level programme into the Emergency Medical Services. Due to the course being offered in English only, literacy will place the candidate in good stead. Entrance is based up the guidelines set by the HPCSA Duration The course is scheduled over a 5 week period between 08:00-16: Contents Below is a broad outline of the contents of the course Course Planner/Roster Objectives, Ethics and Responsibilities Human Anatomy and Physiology Primary Survey/Examination Secondary Examination Cardio Vascular System Shock Airway Obstruction Muscular Skeletal System Wounds and Bleeding Fractures Burns Digestive System Poisons Epilepsy and CVA/Stroke Head and Eye Injuries CPR with the use of an AED Pharmacology a. Appropriate use of medications approved by the HPCSA for a BAA Ambulance Technology a. Use of appropriate medical equipment b. Use of appropriate extrication devices 5
7 Emergency Management of the above disorders to Basic Life Support level Course fees As per Provincial Gazette/Departmental costing 1.6. Lunch Learners are required to make provision for own lunch Dress Code Fully Approved PPE including: Safety Glasses Stethascope Pupil Torch Sphygmomanometer Gloves (Latex gloves are provided for by the academy) Learners are required to bring spare clothing, suitable to exercise in, as this forms an integral part of the course. 2. Ambulance Emergency Assistant Course (AEA) 2.1. Target population Employees currently working within the emergency medical services and are registered as a BAA with the HPCSA for a minimum of 1 year. Basic Ambulance Assistants, meeting the requirements stipulated by the HPCSA, wishing to further their knowledge and skills competency Selection criteria As per the guidelines stipulated by the HPCSA 2.3. Duration The course is comprised of: Theoretical Phase This phase is comprised of 7 weeks theoretical work from 07:30 to 16:00, followed by 2 week examination time. Successful candidates may then qualify to complete the experiential training. Experiential Phase 6
8 This phase is comprised of 7 weeks of on-the-job training in various medical training facilities under the guidance of trained and qualified professionals. Hours are dependent on the area of work scheduled to attend. 13 5. Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Course 4.1. Target population All emergency services personnel requiring update on their skills and knowledge. Nursing Personnel/ Doctors who require updated American Heart Association course access Selection criteria Although there are no selection criteria, people wishing ot complete this course must hold a medical qualification. Completion of the course is subject to entrance examination completion Duration The course is scheduled over a 1-day period between 07:30-16: Contents The focus of the course is based on the provision that the learner enters the course with prior knowledge and understanding of their scope of work and protocols. CPR for Adult, Child and Neonate in the emergency setting Use of an Automated External Defibrilator Choking Adult and Paediatric Approach to an emergency Use of advanced airway devices Recognition of common cardiac emergencies Recognition of a patient suffering from a stroke 4.5. Course fees NO COSTING HAS BEEN SET AS YET COJEMS WOULD NEED TO PROCURE THE BOOKS PRIOR TO DOING THIS COURSE. INDUSTRY STANDARD IS R Lunch Learners are required to make provision for own lunch. 12
