1 May 26, 2015 Dear AP World History Students, Congratulations on your decision to take the AP World History class! You are about to embark upon the most rewarding, rigorous, intensive, and thought-provoking Social Studies courses so far in your life as a student. The focus of this class is to help you pass the AP World History exam in May, If you score a 3, 4, or 5 then you will have earned college credit (please check with individual colleges for their rules regarding AP credit). In order to accomplish this goal, we have a lot of work to do! We will develop your ability to assess historical materials - their relevance to a given interpretive problem, their reliability and their importance and to weigh evidence and interpretations present in historical scholarship. This means that there will be lots of essay writing and document analysis. The emphasis is placed on critical thinking and evaluating history, not simply memorizing dates or events. You can also count on nightly homework readings of 10 to 15 pages of college level material. Nightly homework reading is absolutely essential to the course! You will not be able to get by without reading these assignments. You must plan on minutes of homework a night for this class or 1 ½ to 2 hours every other night (based on the block schedule). As a reminder, AP World History is a COLLEGE class. It has been designed by College Board and approved by college professors throughout the country, which means that the demands upon students are equivalent to those made by full year introductory college courses. Hence, the stress level will always be high and at times overwhelming. This course will be extremely challenging and comprehensive. The course is not necessarily difficult, but it is time-consuming and is no comparison to an honors class. I can guarantee that if you continually come to class and try with the attitude that you can do the work, you will be successful. Thus, your success in this class will correlate to effort, not simply your intellectual ability. Accordingly, because of the level and pace of the class, it is imperative that you come to class (on time) every day! In fact, missing one day in an AP course is equivalent to missing three days in an honors class. In order for you to prepare now for this class, I have included some information regarding the class. In addition, there is a summer reading assignment outlined on the following page. Please read over these directions carefully. Please know that in order to prepare you for the rigor of this class and to help you be successful, I will give 110% every day. I will stay daily after school for any extra help that you

2 may need. I will be there for you every step of the way. I love what I do and my goal is to be there for all of my students! 3 General Course Information and Requirements Summer Reading Assignment. There is a summer reading assignment, which is due the first day of school. Please find all the details on the back of this sheet. School Supplies. Please purchase the following items for the course: 2-1 Binders One for each semester 1 set of 8 dividers/ tabs 2-3 packages of loose leaf paper (300 sheets) for nightly homework/ notes and daily classwork Lots of pens (blue and black ink for essays) and pencils (multiple choice) Colored pencils for map projects 3-4 Posterboards You will be assigned a group posterboard project for each unit (6 time periods). Optional - Notecards, post-it notes, and highlighters may be other helpful study tools for you. Also, markers would be helpful for titles in your notebook. Extra Credit - One pack of Xerox paper (500 sheets) for copies of other homework reading assignments (1 extra credit option per quarter) Wish List Kleenex, Hand Sanitizer, Clorox Wipes Computer Access. Students must have access to a computer and printer. If you do not regularly use one at home, then you must be prepared to use the schools computers in the Media Center during lunch and/or after school. I regularly post assignments on classjump.com. Students can access work for when they are absent as well as additional resources on this site. In addition, there will be other research-based projects assigned in class in which students will need to use a computer for their research. Grading and Other Policies I will give you a full description of all other class policies and procedures when school begins.

4 Directions 1. Please read the AP WORLD HISTORY SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT Purpose The summer reading assignment is designed to accomplish several things: First, it will familiarize students with some important terminology. Second, it will help students to become familiar with the important transition from Hunting and Gathering to Agriculture, which is known as the Neolithic Revolution and build upon their prior knowledge of Ancient Civilizations. Third, it will provide students with an introduction to book that will be used throughout the course as a review guide to better prepare for the AP World History Exam. Because annotation and highlighting the text dramatically increases reading comprehension, it is extremely helpful for students to have a book that they can make their own. Although it is not a requirement, I strongly recommend that you purchase a copy of this book. Finally, because the curriculum is so enormous (10,000 years of history), this gives us a head start so that we can have a bit more time for the review before the exam. Introduction to Unit 1 and Chapters 1-2 from Ethel Wood s book (pdf file on Middleton High School s website link will be on the left side of the home page). If you do not have a computer at home, I suggest you access this file at your local public library. **You may want to purchase a copy of this book ( AP World History: an Essential Coursebook by Ethel Wood, 2nd edition, published by Woodyard Publications (ISBN 13: ). It can be ordered from your local Barnes and Noble or other bookstore or purchased online directly from Woodyard Publications or Amazon.com. 2. How were changes in the social structure of the society connected to trends in government, economy, art, literature, philosophy, and religion? Political Structures: State-Building, Administration, Expansion, and Conflict What kind of government existed and why was that particular kind of government formed or adopted/adapted in this society? City-states, kingdoms, empires, nations, theocracies, democracies, nationalism, imperialism, colonies What factors contributed to its success and expansion? What kind of administration existed? What factors contributed to long-term stability? What factors contributed to its weakness or failure? Revolts, revolutions, social or cultural changes What regional, trans-regional, and global structures and organizations existed and why? Interaction Between Humans and the Environment How did the environment (geography, rainfall patterns, climate, available flora and fauna, available animals) affect human activity? Did the environment hinder or help human activity? How did humans interact with the environment? (Demography: migrations and patterns of settlement, technology, trade routes, populations) What were the consequences of the interaction? (Diseases, pollution, depletion of resources ) Culture: Development and Interaction of Cultures What were the beliefs, ideas, and religions of the society? How or where did the beliefs and religions originate? Did they originate with that society or were they adopted or adapted because of interaction with another society? What was significant about the art, architecture, literature, science, and technology of the society and what did they reveal about the society? Economy: Creation, Expansion, and Interaction of Economic Systems How did this society use its resources to satisfy its needs? How did it produce, distribute, and consume food, goods, and services? Hunting-foraging, agricultural, pastoral, industrial production, labor systems, command economies, free market economies, mixed economies, mercantilism What were the patterns of trade and commerce between societies, regions, and global networks? What factors contributed to increased trade? (technology, demand for products, availability of raw resources) How did trade and commerce affect economic growth or weakness within the society?
