AUSTRAC serves a dual role of Australia s anti-money laundering regulator and specialist financial intelligence unit. Working as an analyst, I investigate a range of financial and open source information with a view of preparing intelligence products for State, Territory and Australian Government law enforcement, security, social justice and revenue agencies. I have been employed at AUSTRAC for almost three years now. Starting as an Assistant Analyst I was able to learn the systems and establish a grounding of what the role of an Analyst would entail. I am lucky enough to be in a job that is always challenging me in new ways. Given criminals are always coming up with new ways of laundering money, there is always something to learn from each case I am involved with. 5

15 Fees & Charges Fees and charges The Navitas College of Public Safety is a private education provider and wholly self funded it receives no Government funding, and therefore full fees are required. Students may choose to pay these fees directly to the College or to apply for an interest free loan from the Commonwealth Government which will cover the entire cost of the tuition fees for the course. This loan scheme is called FEE-HELP. Students must be Australian citizens in order to be able to apply for FEE- HELP, and may be full or part time. The loan will be paid back to the Government through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), once the student begins to earn over a certain amount (around - $41,000 per annum). The loan incurs a loan fee, also payable to the ATO. For more information regarding FEE-HELP, refer to the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations website Overseas students Please refer to the NCPS website at for fee payment details. Annual tuition fee increases The College of Public Safety reserves the right to annually adjust tuition fees to take into account increases in costs. Textbooks Students are required to purchase their own textbooks. Typically the cost will be around $300 per teaching period. Fee refunds Refunds will be paid for cancelled enrolments, withdrawing, or deferring depending on the date the suspension of studies occurs. Charges may be incurred. Details are available from Student Administration on (03) or the NCPS website at Tuition Assurance Scheme The College is a member of the Australian Students Tuition Assurance Scheme (ASTAS) and the Overseas Tertiary Assurance Scheme (OSTAS). This ensures that, should the College no longer be able to provide the courses, students will be able to enrol in a similar course offered by another tertiary education provider, with full credit, and leading to the same or comparable qualification. The TAS also guarantees to refund tuition fees or transfer them to the new provider. For more information on the TAS, please refer to the operator of the scheme, ACPET, at Tuition fees are charged per enrolled unit of study. A full time student enrols in 12 units per year, so the annual fees will be unit price x 12. Students paying fees direct to the College will pay these fees prior to the start of each teaching period. Students with FEE-HELP loans will owe this amount plus the loan fee to the Government. Please refer to our website for current fees. Jessica completed the Bachelor of Social Science (Criminal Justice) degree which enabled her to pathway into further studies in Law. Since completing my degree, I have undertaken further studies in Law. My degree made the transition in to such a course very natural as it provided a substantial foundation for many legal principles and subjects. The subjects I studied allowed me to gain a substantial amount of credit for my law degree reducing it from four years to two and a half. It wasn t all work and no play for Jessica throughout her studies though. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at NCPS, making many great friends and having a laugh along the way. They really did make it a pleasure to learn. 13

Contact is usually divided into a 2 hour lecture and a 1 hour tutorial or a 3 hour seminar per subject per week. Subjects are usually timetabled on four days of the week with classes scheduled during the day, between 9:00am and 5:00pm. Part time students also attend daytime classes. Timetables change each teaching period. Who will be teaching me? The courses are taught by criminal justice, public safety and security experts with a wide range of current professional and academic experience, most of whom currently work in their area of expertise. This means students are exposed to teaching staff who are able to teach the theory as well as discuss current trends, practices and professional applications. What type of teaching can I expect? Mostly large formal lectures and smaller interactive tutorials as well as seminar style classes. Field trips, lectures by visiting experts, debates, practical workshops, class presentations and final year practical work placements are also incorporated into the teaching. What else is available at the College to help with my studies? Commencing students study an innovative and valuable subject, the Skills Enhancement Program, which is designed to teach many tertiary level skills such as academic writing, public speaking and exam techniques. The College has an excellent and well resourced library, staffed by qualified librarians. The library has the most up to date books, journals and electronic resources, and computers with Internet access. If I am having problems affecting my ability to study, where can I go for help? The academic and student support staff are happy to discuss any study related problems you may be experiencing. For students who feel that their academic performance is being adversely affected by personal problems, a student counselling service is available, staffed by psychologists and social workers.
