Talking or writing about the desire to end one s life. A recent loss of a loved one, particularly someone in the family. Giving away personal possessions. Abrupt (and subtle) changes in behavior, such as cutting off friendships. Change in eating and sleeping patterns. Declining school performance, coupled with expressions of helplessness and apathy. Family disruptions, such as divorce, or other changes within the home. A sudden lifting of sadness, depression, or withdrawal, which may indicate that the decision to commit suicide has been made. If you know someone who is talking about suicide, care enough to get help. Suicide Hotline SUICIDE Region 1 Mental Health Crisis Line Kootenai County Crisis Hotline Suicide Prevention Lifeline TALK
9 Page 24 Suicide Many people go through life hiding their problems and feelings from the world, their families, and friends. Occasionally, these feelings can lead to serious depression and even thoughts of suicide if you feel seriously depressed or suicidal, please reach out for help. Talk to a friend, parent, teacher, counselor or religious leader. Or call a suicide prevention hotline. If someone talks to you about suicide, take it seriously. A friend may tell you about suicidal feelings and ask you to keep it a secret. Being a good friend means that you will not keep this secret. You must tell someone you trust. Also, encourage the person talking about suicide to talk to an adult he or she trusts. Suicide threats are cries for help from people who don t realize that they have other choices. If you think someone may be suicidal, don t be afraid to ask. Mentioning suicide will not give the person the idea or push them over the edge. Talking about it can prevent it from happening. The period of crisis usually lasts a short time. With help, a person can start to work through the feelings and problems that led to this place.
