Introduction Created: May 2014 The purpose of this document is to provide the stylistic guidelines for community translators who contribute to Facebook Hungarian localization. The scope of this style guide includes general Facebook content standards, Hungarian language conventions and localization specific guidelines. Approach Content Principles All Facebook content should follow these 3 simple rules. This keeps people's experience consistent, builds trust and strengthens our brand. 1. Keep It Simple Use short words and sentences, and keep the number of words to a minimum. 2. Get to the Point Clearly explain how things work and give people enough information to make good decisions. 3. Talk Like a Person Keep things friendly, conversational and respectful, like you re talking to a neighbor. The Facebook Voice The Facebook voice is our personality. Our tone may change in different contexts, but we always sound like Facebook: simple, straightforward and human. Simple: Stick to common words that people use in everyday speech. Be concise. Write short sentences that are easy to understand. 4
Straightforward: Keep terms and messaging consistent across all channels, on and off Facebook. Don't bury information or gloss over it. Don't use language that s vague or possibly misleading. Human: Translate like you re talking to someone one-on-one. (Read your content out loud if you re not sure it sounds natural.) Stay neutral. Avoid language that s opinionated, cutesy, irreverent or otherwise over the top. Don't sound like a robot. Even the smallest bits of interface content should be approachable. Basics Be Brief Use as few words as possible while still being clear. Make sure every word has a job to do Replace jargon with everyday terms Consider Your Audience Facebook reaches people of all ages and backgrounds in nearly every country around the world. While most websites have a target demographic, we want to help people around the world connect each other on Facebook. This means our audience is truly everyone. Exceptions: When translating for specific audiences (ex: advertisers, developers, people in security checkpoints, and so on), you may need to incorporate special terminology or adjust your tone. However, the basic standards above still apply. 5
Make it Readable Readability is a measure of how easy it is to both read words and understand them. With an audience of diverse ages, cultures and literacy levels, readability helps make Facebook usable and accessible. Use Active Voice In an active sentence, the subject of the sentence is doing something. In a passive sentence, something is being done to the subject (making the subject passive). Your work info has been updated. Munkahelyi adataid frissítve lettek. Munkahelyi adataid megváltoztak. Your response will be used by Facebook to improve your experience. Style Abbreviations Válaszod a Facebook részéről a használati élmény javítására kerül felhasználásra. Válaszodat a Facebook a használati élmény javítására fogja felhasználni. An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word. Abbreviate text if space is an issue or to make the text easier to read at a glance. Units of time: Century XXI. évszázad (use Roman numerals and the period) Decades 80-as évek Months jan., febr., márc., ápr., máj., jún., júl., aug., szept., okt., nov., dec. (with periods, lowercase) Dates jan. 9. vagy feb. 1. 6
Days Avoid abbreviating the names of the days, use H, K, Sze, Cs, P, Szo, V space is really tight (no periods). When days are not abbreviated, use lowercase. Hours use the 24-hour format, i.e. 23:00 for 11pm) Other common usages: Examples Use Pl. or pl. (only one period) to abbreviate például etc. Always include a period after stb. Do not use a comma in front of stb. in lists. info (no period) Spell out information unless space is very limited Facebook Don't abbreviate Facebook USA Do not use U.S.A. or U.S. March már. márc. cf. v.ö. vö. Acronyms Acronyms are abbreviations formed using the first letters of a compound term. URL, SMS and PC are common acronyms. Since acronyms aren't universally recognized, replace them with common words. Bad PC Good számítógép 7
Exceptions: Use an acronym only if it helps clarify meaning and there s no common word to replace it. Then: Define the acronym in parentheses the first time you use it. Ex: API (Application Program Interface) Don t use periods. Ex: API, not A.P.I. Use acronyms in Hungarian that are common use even if the English original does not use them and the meaning is absolutely clear from the context (example: text message = SMS, when used in the mobile context but not in the Messenger context). API API API (alkalmazásprogramozási felület) U.S. U.S.A. USA Capitalization Do not follow English capitalization in titles or UI items. Capitalize only the first word in links or on buttons. Report/Block... Jelentés/Tiltás... Jelentés/tiltás... Get Started on Facebook Az Első Lépések A Facebookon Az első lépések a Facebookon Consistency The general rule is to keep consistency in translating the same terminology with the same concept. It is also important to precisely match the translations for items in the user interface and references to these items (e.g. buttons) in corresponding descriptions. 8
If you click 'Mark as Spam', this person will not be able to send you any more friend requests. Ha a Megjelölés kéretlenként hivatkozásra kattintasz, ez a személy többé nem fog tudni Ha a Megjelölöm kéretlenként hivatkozásra kattintasz, ez a személy többé nem fog tudni Reenter your code or click 'My Code Doesn't Work' in Code Generator Contractions Not applicable Gender Not applicable ismerősnek jelölni téged. Add meg újra a kódot, vagy kattints a Nem megy a kódom hivatkozásra a kódgenerátorban Numbers (includes currency, dates and times) ismerősnek jelölni téged. Add meg újra a kódot, vagy kattints a Nem működik a kód hivatkozásra a kódgenerátorban We use numbers in text, when referring to currency, and in time stamps and dates. Numerals in headlines and text: Use numerals for numbers greater than ten. Numbers one through ten should be written out in full. From 0 to 9999, digits should be together with no separator, while from onwards a nonbreaking space should be used to set off groups of 3 digits
Use a comma as decimal separator. Percentages There should be no space between the percentage value and the % symbol: 60%. Measurement and conversions Use the metric system for Hungarian and add a non-breaking space between the number and the sign: 30 m. Currency Use the numerical form: Game: 10 kredit, 1 dollár értékben Ledger/payment flow: 1,00 dollár The currency symbols should follow the amount, not precede it: 450 USD/ 450 $. Space permitting, Hungarian currency names can be also used: 450 dollár. By default, do not convert any currency values unless specifically instructed. When using currency symbols, please remember to include a non-breaking space between number and sign Time stamps and dates Use the numerical form and write the numbers as concisely as possible. Use the 24-hour format whenever possible, if not, lowercase am/pm indicators (de./du.) must precede the time value. 5 perce január 9., de. 10 óra In the Hungarian date format, the year (written numerically) is followed by a full stop, the month (Roman or Arabic numbers or spelled out, using lowercase), a full 10
stop if not the entire name of the month is spelled out, then the day followed by a full stop. Hearing Date: June 28, 2013 A meghallgatás dátuma: A meghallgatás dátuma: at 10:00 a.m június 28., 10:00 de június 28., 10:00. Pronouns As a general rule in Hungarian, pronouns tend to be omitted in translation since they decrease readability and the person is indicated by the verb. When possible, avoid the use of possessives since in English they are used more frequently than in Hungarian. Note that when the user s gender is not set on the profile, the personal pronouns they and them and the possessive adjective "their" are used. Please translate this using a singular form when the next word or the context indicates that it is actually singular. Please note that the őket personal pronoun can be used not only for living grammatical objects and its use is preferable to ezeket in these scenarios. The meaning of objective pronouns is often carried by the definite verbal conjugation; please omit the use of the pronoun in these cases. (See the example.) {name1} commented on their photo. {name1} hozzászólt a fényképükhöz. {name1} hozzászólt a fényképéhez. 12 Punctuation The general rule is to follow the standard punctuation rules set by the Hungarian Academy of Science ( A magyar helyesírás szabályai ). Colon After a colon, capitalize the first word of a full sentence. When the text preceding the colon is integral to the sentence after the colon, use lowercase. Comma In general, no commas should be placed before the Hungarian és and vagy when the conjunction is used to link two related terms. Quotation Marks Use Hungarian-style quotation marks (ALT+0132, ALT+0148). Em Dash Do not use the em dash in Hungarian translations, replace with a simple dash (ALT+0150), a colon, commas or brackets, as required. Use the regular dash symbol (ALT+0150) for number or date ranges and for negative numbers. Note This may take a while. Megjegyzés Ez eltarthat egy ideig. Megjegyzés: Ez eltarthat egy ideig. 15 to Note: Dealing with punctuation rules is a little different in UI translations. Make sure to follow the English source strings to avoid any potential issues. For example, a source string may not include a period after a full sentence though the general rule is that we should add a period after a full sentence in Hungarian. Some strings are structured this way on purpose, so please follow the punctuation used in source strings, except when the context is clear (e.g. when using inline translation) and the full stop would be missing from the end of the sentence. In this latter case, add the full stop. 12
{name} and {=[number] others} invited you to like {name} és {=[number] others} ajánlott oldalakat {name} és {=[number] others} ajánlott oldalakat. Pages Update Status Frissítsd az állapotodat Állapot frissítése Spacing Please don t add a space between a word and an opening/closing parenthesis or quotation mark. Please do not leave more than one space between sentences, even if the English source includes several spaces. Use non-breaking spaces to prevent improper division of elements such as product names, part numbers, page number references, numbers, dates, etc. No space should appear between the Plus and Minus sign and the following numeral. Space should always appear after a punctuation mark, and not before it. In Hungarian there is no space between the parentheses and the text inside them. The placement of a full stop with the parentheses depends on what they refer to: if they enclose a part of the sentence, the full stop is placed after the closing bracket; if they enclose the full sentence, the full stop is placed inside the parentheses. The same applies to quotation marks. Make sure not to leave double spaces between words. Make sure not to leave a space before colons, commas, full stops, semicolons. Titles and Subtitles Titles and subtitles help you organize information, introduce ideas and highlight key concepts. Interface content Dialogs and pop-ups usually have just one title and subtitle. 13
Titles and Subtitles Please capitalize the first word in titles. Do not follow the English title case rules. Full stops are not required at the end of titles except in the rare case when the title includes more than one full sentence. Do not omit exclamation marks or question marks. Delete Post Bejegyzés Törlése Bejegyzés törlése Please note: Facebook will never request your login information through . Megjegyzés: a Facebook soha nem kéri ben a bejelentkezési adataidat. Megjegyzés: A Facebook soha nem kéri ben a bejelentkezési adataidat. Tone The tone of most Facebook translations will be informal ( tegezés ). Use formal tone ( Ön ) only in legal texts not targeting general users, e.g. contracts for advertisers, cease and desist notes, etc. Overall style should be clear and concise to help readability. Literal translations should be avoided, as they impair comprehension and make the target text sound unnatural. Ideally, the translated text should be easy to read, convey the same information as the English and be able to pass as a text originally written in the target language. Use an informal, direct and friendly tone while avoiding slang and local words. 14
You may also delete your account or disable your application at any time. Te is bármikor törölheted a fiókodat vagy letilthatod az alkalmazásodat. Ön is bármikor törölheti a fiókját vagy letilthatja alkalmazását. By clicking "{button label}", you agree to the {=Facebook Statement of Rights and Responsibilities}, including your obligation to comply with the {=Advertising Guidelines}. Az {button label} gombra való kattintással vállalod, hogy betartod a {=Facebook Statement of Rights and Responsibilities}ában foglaltakat, beleértve a {=Advertising Guidelines}ben foglaltakat is. Other Language Conventions Bullet Lists Az {button label} gombra való kattintással Ön vállalja a {=Facebook Statement of Rights and Responsibilities}ában foglaltak betartását, beleértve a {=Advertising Guidelines}ben foglaltak kötelező betartását. When an item in a bullet list is a full sentence, add the end-of-sentence symbol (full stop, question mark, exclamation mark) even if it is omitted from the source sentence. If each sentence in a bullet list is the continuation of an initial sentence, the first letter of the first word should not be capitalized, even when the source word is capitalized. Add a semi-colon at end of each sentence and a full stop at the end of the last sentence of the list. 15
Now it's easier to: Monitor what's working and not working on your Page. Understand the people who like your Page and engage with your posts. Make decisions about the best ways to connect with your audience. Könnyebbé váltak a következő műveletek: Az oldal jól működő és nem bevált elemeinek figyelemmel kísérése. Az oldaladat kedvelő és a bejegyzéseiddel kapcsolatban aktív emberek megértése. Döntéshozatal a célközönség megragadásának legmegfelelőbb módjairól. To qualify for a bounty, you must: - Adhere to our Responsible Disclosure Policy (above) - Be the first person to responsibly disclose the bug A jutalomra való jogosultság előfeltételei: - Be kell tartania a felelős közlésre vonatkozó szabályokat (lásd fentebb) - Önnek kell lennie az első személynek, aki felelős módon közli a felderített hibát Könnyebbé váltak a következő műveletek: az oldal jól működő és nem bevált elemeinek figyelemmel kísérése; az oldaladat kedvelő és a bejegyzéseiddel kapcsolatban aktív emberek megértése; döntéshozatal a célközönség megragadásának legmegfelelőbb módjairól. Calls for Action When a sentence calls for action in the source, its objective is often to focus the attention on a feature. These sentences can be rendered in Hungarian using can/may structures as Hungarian cultural traditions tolerate imperatives to a lesser extent. Create a Facebook Page to build a closer relationship with your audience and customers. Hozz létre saját Facebook-oldalt, hogy szorosabb kapcsolatba kerülhess közönségeddel vagy ügyfeleiddel! Get answers in the Help Center Keresd meg a választ kérdéseidre a Súgóközpontban Ha saját Facebook-oldalt hozol létre, szorosabb kapcsolatot alakíthatsz ki közönségeddel és ügyfeleiddel. A Súgóközpontban választ kaphatsz kérdéseidre. 16
Definite Articles As the Hungarian language uses different definite articles depending on the first sound of the succeeding word, the conventional solution in localization for variables is to use a(z). However, this approach results in a very technical style which should be avoided on Facebook. There are several techniques to handle these structures. Turn off notifications about Kikapcsolod a(z) {page} új Kikapcsolod az oldal ({page}) new likes for {page}? kedveléseire vonatkozó új kedveléseire vonatkozó {name1}, {name2} and {name3} like {page}. értesítéseket? {name1}, {name2} és {name3} kedveli a(z) {page} oldalt. értesítéseket? {name1}, {name2} és {name3} kedveli: {page}. Use of Quotation Marks When providing instructions, button names, menu names, section names, etc. should be written between quote marks, except if the text already highlights them by using bold formatting or any other means. In the menu that appears, click Information to display relevant data. A megfelelő adatok megjelenítéséhez kattints a megjelenő menü Információ pontjára. A megfelelő adatok megjelenítéséhez kattints a megjelenő menü Információ pontjára. 17
Localization Guidelines General Information Product Names Product and feature names should be consistently translated. Some product and feature names are translated and others are used in English based on strategic decisions. For example, Messenger was translated in many languages, but now changed back to English in all languages. Messenger Üzenetküldő Messenger Ads Manager Ads Manager Hirdetéskezelő business manager Vállalkozáskezelő vállalkozáskezelő Facebook-specific nouns should not be capitalized: Page, Wall, etc. User Interface Buttons Buttons are one of the main ways people take action on Facebook, so they should be clear, active and specific. Button names and action links are translated using gerunds. The exceptions are the links that refer to social actions, ex: Share, Like, Comment. Button text should not include full stops. Comment Hozzászólás Hozzászólok Export Results Exportáld az eredményeket. Eredmények exportálása Please see below an example of common buttons, translated using a gerund form: 18
When there is more than one word in a button, every word tends to be capitalized in English. Such capitalization should be avoided in Hungarian and only the first word should be capitalized. Delete Message Üzenet Törlése Üzenet törlése Mobile Mobile UI localization has more space constraint than regular UI localization. Mobile strings sometimes come with specific description about the allowed number of characters. It is important to keep translation within this limit in order to avoid any truncation issues, e.g.: in SMS-related translations. If possible, try to put the most important information at the front of the sentence so that it won t be buried with other information. However, translations should not deviate from the English source unless instructed otherwise, since this may cause accuracy issues. Third Party UI If you encounter third party UI terms, please check if they were localized. For example, please check the existing translations on iphone if they refer to iphone UIs. Also, it is very important to keep consistency with relevant OS UI options. Endusers are to be presented with accurate information when they need to perform concrete actions, such as deleting browser s cookies. In light of this, consistency with actual UI options, also when they refer to third parties, is to be carefully ensured. 19
Tokens UIs often include tokens which are a portion of full sentences and represent the bricks of what will be seen by the users. Note that text in { } are placeholders and replaced by either a variable or another string. For example, {name} is replaced by a user name and {count} is replaced by a number. If the placeholder contains the = sign right after the opening bracket, it means that it will be replaced by exactly the same text that it contains. {user} edited his {=changed relationship status} that you followed. The {user} token will be replaced by the name of the user, while the {=changed relationship status} token will be replaced exactly by the words changed relationship status, and this will look like Jane edited her changed relationship status that you followed. {name} commented on their {=changed relationship status} {name} hozzászólt az {=changed relationship status}éhez status}ához {user} shared a {=link}: "{title}" {user} megosztott egy {=link}et: {title} {name} hozzászólt a {=changed relationship {user} megosztott egy {=link}t: {title} 20
