5 Psychoacoustics 5 and 6 June 015 Dik J. Hermes Summary It is a truism to say that one of the most important ways of communication between humans is by sound. The role of speech and music in human communication can only be underestimated. However true that may be, speech and music consist physically of acoustic waves, and before the listener can interpret these incoming waves, they undergo a complex series of perceptual transformations. These transformations lead to the emergence of auditory attributes of sound such as its pitch, loudness, and timbre. In this lecture series on psychoacoustics, the focus will be on the formation of the percepts of loudness and pitch. The course will consist of lectures illustrated by auditory demonstrations, and a few assignments The series starts with an overview of the human peripheral auditory system, since the structure of this sensory organ will appear to have a very direct impact on the way we perceive sound. Anatomy and physiology will be summarized. Based on this, two computational models will be presented, one for loudness perception and one for pitch perception. I m sure that after the course you will all agree with me that the auditory system is a surprisingly intelligent and highly sophisticated system, possibly more than you might have thought before.
