3 UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND School of Nursing BSN Transfer Student Prerequisite Guide Admittance into the upper division nursing coursework for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is dependent upon the following: A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above* A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in the required sciences Calculation of your cumulative science GPA will be based on the following courses: General Biology, Anatomy with lab, Physiology with lab, and Microbiology with lab Completion of all prerequisite courses. Lower division credit may be taken at any accredited college or university. All prerequisite courses must be graded with a C or higher. Pass/No Pass is not allowed. Computer experience/literacy (ability to use a PC for word processing, , and access to the Internet) is required. *Please note these are the minimum requirements. Transfer student admission to the upper division program is very competitive with average GPAs significantly higher than the requirement. Transfer students' cumulative GPA for admission to upper division nursing courses is computed from all college level coursework. 4 of Portland School of Nursing Frequently Asked Questions Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Transfer Program Q: How can I apply for admission to the School of Nursing as a Transfer Student? A: To apply to the of Portland (UP) School of Nursing (SON), complete a Transfer Student Application for Admission. Applications are available through the UP Office of Admissions ( or ). You may also apply online. The online application can be found by visiting and selecting Admissions. The will begin accepting applications for the Fall 2015 semester and the Spring 2016 semester on September 1, The deadline for both semesters is February 1, Check the SON website for application deadline and submission information. Decisions for both semesters will be made in March Q: Are there prerequisites for students applying to transfer to the School of Nursing? A: Yes. The prerequisite list is available on the SON website. To view the list of prerequisites visit nursing.up.edu. Once there, select Baccalaureate Program, then Transfer Students and select Prerequisites at the bottom of the page. At the bottom of this page you will also find a link called BSN Course Equivalency Guide and Program Information. This provides a list of suggested courses from local colleges and universities. Q: Do I need to have each prerequisite completed in order to apply for admission? A: No. You may apply to the SON while you are in the process of taking the prerequisite courses. Please include a plan for completing the prerequisites in your application. All prerequisite courses must be completed prior to starting school at UP. NOTE You will be more competitive if you have all/the majority of your science courses completed when you apply. Q: Do I need to submit transcripts from each college I have attended? A: Yes. Official transcripts from each college you have attended are required. Please submit official transcripts showing completion of current coursework by the application deadline. Q: Can I apply to transfer to the of Portland as a sophomore? A: No. Transfer students in the SON are only accepted into the junior year and cannot transfer as a freshman or sophomore. Q: I already have a bachelor s degree. Do I need to complete all the prerequisites? A: Yes. To be admitted to the upper division nursing courses (junior year), each prerequisite must be completed before starting the nursing program. Q: Is there an age limit on prerequisite courses? A: No, however if you are accepted to the SON, you are expected to have a solid understanding of Anatomy and Physiology, Foundations of Biology, Microbiology, Statistics, Human Development, and Nutrition. 4
5 Q: Are transcript evaluations available prior to applying for admission? A: At this time, the does not offer transcript evaluations. Prospective transfer students are encouraged to attend an information session (see nursing.up.edu for upcoming dates) to learn more about the application/admission process as well as ask specific transfer questions. You may also contact the SON with specific questions about your transfer credits Informational meetings with an Admissions Counselor can be arranged by contacting the UP Office of Admissions ( or ). Q: When does the Nursing program begin? A: The upper division nursing courses begin in the Fall semester (late August) and in the Spring semester (mid January) each year. Applications for either semester of entry are available beginning on September 1, 2014 and are due by February 1, Note: Seats in the fall semester are reserved for our 4-year students; however, seats may become available to transfer students. Typically transfer students are accepted into the spring semester and will be notified directly if they are granted approval to begin in the fall. Q: How long is the BSN program? A: The upper division coursework of the BSN program is 5 semesters in length (including summers). Students that become out of progression are readmitted into the program on a space available basis. Q: Is the BSN program full-time? A: Yes. Students in the BSN program are required to follow a set curriculum. During the Fall and Spring semesters, students take at least 12 credits. In the summer, students take at least 6 credits. Q: Are BSN transfer applicants eligible for the Providence Scholarship? A: Yes. Students applying to the SON as transfer students are eligible to apply for the Providence Scholarship. For more information about the Providence Scholars Program, visit nursing.up.edu, then select Financial Aid Opportunities, then Providence Scholars Program. Q: Are other scholarships available for nursing students? A: Yes. Contact the UP Office of Financial Aid ( ) or visit then select Services, select Financial Aid, then Scholarship Links.
