2 Trento Muse A museum in the heart of the Alps designed by Renzo Piano, whose architecture echoes the distinctive shapes of the mountains. The museum has become synonymous with research and the discovery of nature and science through an innovative, creative and experimental approach. EXHIBITIONS CULTIVATING TASTE 27 MAY 31 OCTOBER Palazzo delle Albere reopens with an exhibition on food production in Trentino: science, art, ethnography, creative workshops, tasting sessions, and green spaces for close encounters with the land. EX AFRICA - EXPLORATIONS IN ART AND SCIENCE BY JONATHAN KINGDON 18 JULY 10 JANUARY 2016 The exhibition explores the prolific research career and scientific and artistic production of leading expert in African mammals, Jonathan Kingdon. It covers his early documentative approach to morphology and anatomy, his investigations into visual communication in animals, and his free artistic interpretations. 3 Rovereto Mart This prestigious Museum was designed by architect Mario Botta and engineer Giulio Andreolli, its circular piazza under a steel and glass cupola standing out amidst Rovereto s 18th century palazzi. Once a cradle of the futurist movement, today Rovereto is still a centre for the arts and contemporary expression. Other branches of Mart are the Casa d Arte Futurista Depero in Rovereto and the Galleria Civica in Trento. EXHIBITIONS #COLLECTIONMART TO 8 NOVEMBER A journey through the collections of Mart in two stages covering one century. In #amodernclassicism the narrative is woven around masterpieces by artists such as Medardo Rosso, Mario Sironi and Giorgio de Chirico. #contemporarycanon presents major works of the post-world War II period by artists such as Lucio Fontana, John Baldessari and Alberto Burri. THE WAR THAT IS COMING IS NOT THE FIRST ONE GREAT WAR TO 20 SEPTEMBER This exhibition at Mart, sponsored by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, marks the anniversary of the start of the Great War, yet goes a step further taking an interdisciplinary perspective on the war to bring the conflict up to the present day through various viewpoints. 4 Trento Castello del Buonconsiglio The Castello del Buonconsiglio is an excellent synthesis of the history of art and of Trentino. Its architecture embraces medieval armed fortress, government palace and Renaissance residence, while inside can be found numerous works of art and wide-ranging collections including the spectacular Ciclo dei Mesi, a masterpiece of international Gothic art. The Museo del Buonconsiglio is at the centre of a network that includes Castel Beseno, Castello di Stenico, Castel Thun, Castel Caldes. EXHIBITIONS EUROPE AT WAR TRACES FROM THE SHORT CENTURY 18 APRIL 6 SEPTEMBER This exhibition looks at the causes which sparked World War I, but also how it was narrated in the art of interventionists enraged by shock and their discovery of the trauma. Paintings, drawings and etchings by Otto Dix, George Grosz, Mario Sironi, Giacomo Balla, Giulio Aristide Sartortio, Italico Brass, Fortunato Depero, and others... LIFE DRAWING/PAINTING SCHOOL. 5 San Michele all Adige Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina Established half a century ago in a dismissed old monastery of the Tyrolese Augustinians. It is considered one of Italy s most important museums of local traditions. A series of wonderfully fascinating displays designed by ethnographer Giuseppe Šebesta, embracing every aspect of the traditional mountain culture of Trentino, from agriculture and handicrafts to folklore and music, take the visitor on a veritable journey into the heart of our region s past. EXHIBITIONS A NETWORK OF TRENTINO ETHNOGRAPHY 1 JUNE 31 OCTOBER The water-powered mill, the maul, the sawmill and the noria reconstructed in the Museum are intended to motivate visitors to explore the other archaeoindustrial machineries in the region, some still in working order. Every year the Museum organizes a tour of these sites, the ethnographic collections, house-museums, and relics of the old agro-silvo-pastoral system in collaboration with eight ecomuseums : Valsugana, Lagorai, Val di Pejo, Valle del Chiese, Vanoi, Tesino, Dolomiti-Garda, Argentario. 6 Museums to explore Trentino is a region framed by the Alps, receptive to the cultural exchanges, ideas and movements that move across Europe now as in the past. A wide variety of museums can be found in the towns and in the valleys offering the visitor unforgettable experiences to nourish the heart and mind. Gallerie di Piedicastello Two disused road tunnels, one white and one black, have been turned into an imaginative, original venue run by the Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino (Trentino Museum Foundation). Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra One of Italy s most important historical museums, the Italian War Museum is housed in Rovereto s 15th century castle and boasts a vast collection of World War I exhibits. Museo Diocesano Tridentino The Diocesan Museum houses works of art and memorabilia of the Council of Trento and of the ancient city of Trento. A branch in Villa Lagarina complements the main museum in Piazza Duomo. Museo Civico di Rovereto Founded in 1851, the town museum looks both to the past and to technological innovation. In addition to the main building, the museum has branches in Palazzo Alberti Poja and the Monte Baldo Botanical Garden. MAG Museo Alto Garda Located in the Rocca di Riva del Garda, the Upper Garda Museum has sections on history, archaeology, landscape and contemporary art, while the Galleria Civica in Arco is dedicated to the painter Giovanni Segantini. Campana dei Caduti Constructed in Rovereto after the Great War in memory of the fallen of all conflicts, it has now become a symbol of peace and dialogic education. Managed by the Campana dei Caduti Works Foundation. Museo Casa De Gasperi The house in Pieve Tesino where statesman Alcide De Gasperi was born is now a museum, a rich repository of Trentino, Italian and European history. Museo Ladino di Fassa Collections and multimedia installations narrate the material and spiritual culture of the Val di Fassa and the language of the Ladin people.

7 SASS Spazio Archeologico Sotterraneo del Sas The most ancient and secret side of Trento is revealed through Roman remains, mosaics and frescoes in this underground archaeological space. Museo Nazionale Storico degli Alpini Located on Doss Trento, the museum displays relics, weapons, photographs and documents relating to the history of the Alpine Corps. Museo delle Palafitte di Fiavè This museum of pile dwellings exhibits archaeological finds and types of dwelling in the Giudicarie Valleys dating back to 3800 BC, with films and reconstructions to complement the visit. Museo Retico di Sanzeno A journey in the Val di Non from prehistory to the period of Christianisation, with an interesting section on the Rhaetians during Roman times. Centro d Arte Contemporanea di Cavalese The historic Palazzo Firmian in Cavalese in Val di Fiemme is home to a vibrant art gallery, which holds numerous exhibitions focussing on contemporary creativity. Centro di Documentazione Stava 1985 A powerful memorial invoking the dramatic mass of water, mud and trees which hit the villages of Stava and Tesero in Val di Fiemme in Arte Sella Works, performances and contemporary art creations in dialogue with the natural environment of the Val di Sella in Valsugana, displayed in the open air. Museo dell Aeronautica Gianni Caproni Founded in the early 20th century by aviation pioneer and native of Trentino Gianni Caproni, the Aeronautical Museum houses a permanent collection of historic aircraft. Museo delle Palafitte del Lago di Ledro The Lake Dwelling Museum houses numerous objects and tools from the Bronze Age. Next to it is a reconstruction of a pile dwelling.

8 Castles to be experienced Wherever you go in Trentino your eye will sooner or later fall upon the crenelated walls and towers of its numerous castles, the legacy of a border land. Over the centuries they have been residences in addition to serving military functions, and are now veritable treasure chests of stories and art objects waiting to be discovered. There are also many ruins, crumbling walls bearing the imprint of time and history, and these, too, are being carefully restored. Castello del Buonconsiglio Imposing military fortress and sumptuous residence of the Prince Bishops, it also houses the collections of the Museo del Buonconsiglio. Castel Beseno The largest ancient fortress in the region, it stands out like a giant ship on a promontory above the Vallagarina. Castello di Rovereto Its walls rising above the town of Rovereto, the castle now also houses the Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra, an important repository of memories. Rocca di Riva Austere yet elegant, this medieval fortification is located right in the heart of the town and is also home to the Museo Civico. Castello di Arco A spectacular castle clinging to a rocky spur above Arco and surrounded by an enchanting landscape of olive groves. Castel Drena Its mighty crenelated medieval tower high above the Sarca valley offers a captivating sight to passing travellers. Castello di Stenico An impressive manor house between Lake Garda and the Brenta Dolomites, with elegant decorations, frescoes and installations.

9 Castello di San Giovanni Rising sheer above Lake Idro, the castle still guards the entrance to the Giudicarie valleys. Castel Thun The architecture retains its appearance of military might, yet inside can be found the extraordinary treasures of a noble residence that has changed little over time. Castel Caldes Majestic manor house at the entrance to the Val di Sole bearing the traces of numerous enlargements between the 13th and 15th centuries. Castello San Michele A manor house with ancient - probably Lombard origins, its importance in the Middle Ages came from having control over the Ossana district in Val di Sole. Torre di Regola Palazzo Assessorile Located in the town of Cles, this is a cluster of several buildings and a medieval tower, a fascinating amalgamation of different epochs. Castello di Avio The gateway to Trentino on the river Adige, the castle has presented a striking spectacle to passing travellers since the 11th century. Castello di Pergine Built in the 12th century, the castle guarded the road to Trento and to the Valle dei Mocheni with its rich mineral deposits. It is now in private ownership housing a hotel and restaurant. Castel Toblino A rare example of a fortified lakeside site. Almost surrounding it, Lake Toblino adds enchantment to the castle. Now a restaurant, the grounds and restaurant are open to visitors.

10 Castles open by appointment Castel Pietra Standing guard over the line of the river Adige at Calliano, it has borne witness to battles between the Venetian Republic, the Imperial army and the Prince Bishops of Trento. Castel Noarna Now lying peacefully amid its splendid vineyards, it was first documented in 1189 and became notorious for its witch trials. Castel Ivano This impressive structure towers over the Valsugana, the reason the most powerful feudal dynasties in the area fought over it between the 12th and 15th centuries. Castel Belasi Set amid coniferous woods in Campodenno, the castle is protected by double walls and an impressive pentagonal tower. The ground floor and inner courtyard can be visited with a guide. The Castle Tourist Train Take a day out to discover the most fascinating manor houses in the Val di Non and Val di Sole and their surrounding landscapes. Journey like a traveller from times gone by along a railway line steeped in fascination and history. Board the train with special carriages in Trento and enjoy the ride up Alpine valleys to Castello San Michele below the white peaks of the Presanella mountains. Then it s on to Castel Caldes, which for centuries stood guard over the entrance to the Val di Sole. The day ends with visits to Castel Valer, with its distinctive tall hexagonal tower, and Castel Thun with its refined atmosphere. On the way, you will have the chance to enjoy a snack along the Apple Road, an aperitif and lunch prepared by the Trentino Association of Chefs, and watch the sun setting over the Dolomites while sipping an evening infusion and getting acquainted with medicinal herb growers. 11 Forts open to the public An entire region transformed into a fortified border, with trenches, military paths, strongholds and fortresses protecting the area from all potential lines of attack. No longer places of devastation, these forts are now repositories of memory, the focus of architectural restoration and preservation. Places worth visiting, standing now amidst silent nature which has healed the once lacerated land. Batteria di Mezzo Artfully camouflaged at the top of Monte Brione overlooking the northern end of Lake Garda, it can be reached by a charming footpath. Forte Belvedere Built between 1909 and 1912, it is one of the fortresses on the Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna plateaux built by order of the Emperor. The fort remains intact and is now a museum. Forte Cadine This classic valley barrier near Cadine, built to defend Trento, is now open to the public with interactive, multimedia displays illustrating Trentino s entire network of fortifications. Forte Corno The fort, which has undergone successful restoration, stands on the right flank of the Valle del Chiese, near Praso. It was built to complement the nearby Lardaro barrier. Forte delle Benne An outpost of the Trento fortress. Located opposite Forte Tenna, the two citadels closed off the Valsugana at Levico like a pincer. Forte Garda Part of the Monte Brione defensive system near Riva del Garda, the fort was built into the contours of the land making it almost invisible. Forte Larino Guarding access to Trentino along the axis of the Valle del Chiese, the fort is near Lardaro, which lent its name to the barrier formed by Forte Larino and two other fortifications. Forte di Nago Part of the Upper Garda defensive works built to block potential infiltration into the Adige Valley through Passo San Giovanni, Mori and Rovereto. Forte Pozzacchio The whole structure, which was recently restored, was carved out of a rocky promontory standing guard over the Vallarsa and access from Vicenza province. Forte Strino Built with the aim of blocking the Tonale road, this nineteenth century fortification soon proved to be inadequate for its purpose. It was decommissioned in Forte Tenna Built at the end of the 19th century on a hill separating Lakes Levico and Caldonazzo, it helped bar the entrance to Trento and watched over the road leading to the Lavarone fortifications.
