Muller Street, Anaheim, CA October 2012 Great Park s Green Home Completed This is the House that ROP BITA (Students) Built S outhern California Edison s John Morton for years has had the dream of creating an affordable green home with all the bells and whistles solar powered electrical as a complete energy source, gray water plumbing, insulated windows, a roof and outer walls that have thermal protection and much more. Over the past two years, the dream has become a reality. UCI students designed the house, area vendors supplied materials, and North Orange County ROP BITA (Building Industry Technology Academy ) students worked with the professional crew to build it. 2 Pictured at right are stacks of framed walls created in spring, 2012, in North Orange County ROP construction yards at seven high schools. If you look closely, you can see school initials spray painted onto the wood frames. Below left, students met in June at ROP s Education Center Board Room to hear what they needed to do to sign up for the summer community classroom portion of their BITA classes. The display showed some of the equipment and protective clothing students needed on the job. Students learned all about grading the land, pouring cement, working to plans and so much more by working side by side with the professionals on the job. 3 Green Home (Continued from page 2) helped to build the home this summer, working alongside contractors and construction crews while earning credits for school. The students liked the work so much that they begged to stay and work (for free!) after the summer school community classroom session ended. North Orange County ROP instructors involved in the summer program included John Puckett and Mike Reed. Above, students and crew put the walls up on the site. At left, students learned soldering and other plumbing basics in the North Orange County ROP Education Center warehouse. As in any other community classroom, students met with their instructor once a week for several hours to learn new skills and talk about their experiences on the job.

4 With the walls up, next came wiring, ducting and any aboveground plumbing. To help students learn how to accomplish some of the wiring portion of the job, Lynne MacVean, president of Mammoth ElecTric, is shown at right with a student who completed the three-way switch. Lynne, her husband, and several of their employees helped students learn how to complete the circuitry for this common switch.

5 Wiring, ducting, joining, and even sinking pylons into concrete were a few of the details students learned on the job at the ABC Green Home site in Irvine at the Great Park. Above, students applied an outer insulating skin over the ThermalStar Rigid Insulation to provide an extra waterproof barrier. - Students made the three way switch work, thanks to Lynn MacVean and her crew from Mammoth Electric Company.

6 Recognition for a Job Well Done Students (top three photos) were awarded plaques from ABC Green Homes by Southern California Edison s John Morton and the construction project managers for commendable work. Students also earned Records of Competency, letters stamped with the official North Orange County ROP Seal, that detailed the skills they learned in their summer community classroom. Instructor John Puckett (kneeling, right) is holding an absent student s Record of Competency. North Orange County ROP students who earn grades of A or B for specified modules in a class will earn Records of Competency always great for the portfolio.

7 The Finish A Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony At left, Karen Nelson, North Orange County ROP assistant superintendent, Educational Services, expressed gratitude that students were given the opportunity be such an integral part of the Green Home construction process and to learn while working on the job. Below, left, proud students and their families posed for one last picture. Nicole Feenstra, ABC Green Home project manager and producer of the ABC Green Home video web series, interviewed student Destiny Delatorre at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. ABC Green Home publisher Nick Slevin presented a plaque to Spencer Smith, who was unable to attend the original ceremony. At the end of the day, joyful and playful students made good use of the Green Home s exercise equipment.
