6 Why Use Effective R-values? Nominal R-values are the rated insulation values provided by the manufacturer Effective R-values are the actual thermal resistances provided by the insulation in a given assembly Effective R-values can be much less than the nominal R-value of the insulation due to thermal bridging. 6
