2 Year-End Highlights New graduate programs began, including the M.A. in Applied Behavior Analysis, the M.S. in Homeland Security, and the 52-week, Saturday-only M.B.A. The School of Business and the School of Arts and Sciences partnered for a new B.S. in Latino/a and Business Studies degree program. Th ree new minors were launched, including graphic design, sustainability, and Latina/o and Caribbean Studies. Sister Rosemary Jeff ries welcomed Bishop David M. O Connell, former president of The Catholic University of America and the new bishop of the Diocese of Trenton, for Mercy Day 2010 and the Opening of School Mass. The Department of Religious Studies and Theology and the GCU-Meridian Health School of Nursing established the Healthcare, Social, and Environmental Ethics Distinguished Lecture Series. Ethicist Patricia Talone, Ph.D., RSM, was the inaugural speaker. Faculty members spearheaded Celebrate the Richness of India, three days of Indian culture, cuisine, commerce, and other topics that att racted visitors from across Monmouth and Ocean counties. Girls in Science and Technology (GIST), a summer program partly underwritten by the Verizon Foundation, Provident Bank, and TD Bank, offered hands-on instruction to 26 middle and high school students. Eduard Bitto, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry, continued researching the origins of the substrate specificity of Erythrocyte Pyrimidine 5 -Nucleotidase Type 1, funded by a $35,000 Research Corporation for Science Advancement award and a $10,000 GCU institutional match. The Office of Security took 4,176 calls in 2010, and officers responded, on average, in under two minutes. Emerging scientists majoring in fields from biology to criminal justice interned at Princeton University, Drexel University, Liquid Light, DPT Pharmaceuticals, and the Ocean County Sheriff s Department s forensics unit. GCU student-athletes volunteered with more than 30 organizations and nonprofit causes, including the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter, the Susan B. Komen Walk for the Cure, and the Tournament of Champions. The Lions also raised $1,500 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized GCU as the Individual Conference Champion for using more green power than any of its CACC peers. GCU used more than 6 million kwh, equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of more than 500 average American homes annually. GCU landed the Noel and Randi Levitz Retention Excellence Award for improving its overall retention rate from 70% to 78%. In 2010, retention of fi rstyear students also soared to 92%, an achievement att ributed to GCU s Early Warning System, in which at-risk students are identified by faculty and student support professionals. The 2010 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) found GCU students are more engaged than ever. Among GCU freshmen, 86% said the university places substantial emphasis on academics, and 90% had a favorable image of The Court. By their senior year, nearly 80% had participated in community service or volunteer work. More than 420 GCU students participated in service projects in 2010, up from 236 students in Much of their work was tied to 185 courses with service learning components. In addition, students donated about 3,400 hours to local and statewide community partners. The 2010 GCU Alumni Survey found nine out of ten GCU alumni still participate in activities that enhance their spirituality, a direct tie to their lifelong commitment to the Mercy core values. More than 200 people responded to the questionnaire, which also found that 70% believe it is important to invest in the next generation of students. Preservation & Rehabilitation work on the exterior of the Mansion continued as part of the $200,000 Save America s Treasures grant, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service. OceanFirst Foundation funded $50,000 in scholarships for scholarships that will help high school graduates from the Jersey Shore area pursue higher education. GCU entered Phase III of the Improving Partnerships and Active Collaboration for Teaching (IMPACT) Grant with Brick Public Schools. The $350,000 New Jersey Department of Education grant pairs university faculty with middle school teachers in math, English, and social studies. Common areas of Maria Hall and St. Joseph Hall were refurbished with updated seating, new carpeting, and other improvements. The new GCU library Learning Zone was created and equipped with coffeehouse-style seating, special study booths with wall-mounted flat-screen monitors, and an Internet-ready Smart TV. Georgian Court opened its doors to nearly 2,000 police officers and community guests from across the nation after the January 21 funeral of slain Lakewood police officer Christopher Matlosz. The GCU Office of Conferences and Special Events drew 19,250 visitors to campus for workshops, community lectures, theater events, concerts, professional meetings, and continuing education. 2 GEORGIAN COURT UNIVERSITY 62417L02.indd 2 12/2/11 10:37 AM
3 Graduate assistants earning their M.B.A. degree worked with faculty and staff to begin a financial literacy program for undergraduates. The GCU Lions won the 2010 CACC Women s Soccer Championship, their second in three years. Forward Kelly Lyons 12 was CACC Women s Soccer Player of the Year, and five Lions (Jennifer Molzon 14, Candace Seaton 12, Denisha Thomas 12, Skyler Eiceman 11, and tourney MVP Shealyn Sullivan 12) were named to the All-Tournament Team. The Department of Marketing and Communications garnered over 15,000 column-inches of media coverage for GCU, equal to $608, of press. Students and faculty traveled abroad, visiting Greece, Italy, and Spain. The campus community joined in letterwriting and campaigns to let New Jersey legislators know how important TAG funding is to their education. They also lobbied Congress to keep Pell Grant funding at current levels. The GCU Alumni Online Community launched, giving graduates a new way to keep current with news and events, class notes, job listings, discussion groups, and donor opportunities. GCU s 16 th Annual Scholarship Classic raised $127,000 in funding for students and organizers honored Joseph Buckelew with the GCU Distinguished Civic Service Award. GCU business students worked with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Maria Bolton 11 and Lauryn Hanrahan 11 assisted underserved and low-income taxpayers, including the elderly, those who are disabled, and those with limited English skills. GCU Women in Leadership Development members worked closely with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) on a range of issues, including international advocacy for women and women in politics. The GCU Office of Institutional Advancement cultivated $900,000 in grants; $396,000 in Annual Fund giving and other donations; and $547,000 in restricted and major gifts. Putting the year in perspective: FY11 FISCAL NOTE Georgian Court saw many accomplishments last year, even as the university met challenges on several fronts. Revenue from tuition and fees was down by $1.4 million as fewer students enrolled, and those who did choose to attend college arrived at GCU needing more scholarship dollars and financial assistance. At the same time, the state of New Jersey slashed its funding to independent colleges. There were fewer government grants, and overall, gifts and private grants were down slightly most likely a reflection of the economic uncertainty individuals and organizations are facing. In general, the costs of operating the university continue to outpace the net tuition revenue that comes into the university. At mid-year, university administrators adjusted budgets across all departments, and worked diligently to cut costs, streamline operations, and re-examine expenditures. By June 30, the university had a $195,000 surplus and saw a positive return on the GCU endowment. In recent months, the GCU Office of Admissions has implemented a more aggressive enrollment recruitment plan, and the GCU advancement team continues to engage donors and foundations to help close the gap between tuition revenue and operating expenses. Faculty and students continue to make the case for financial support to New Jersey legislators and to Congress, and new market-driven academic programs are being designed and implemented. Overall, all departments and offices across the GCU campus are working collaboratively to attract more students and enhance the university s offerings for future generations PRESIDENT S ANNUAL REPORT & HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 3
