1 CUA THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA Office of Alumni Relations Washington, DC CUA Alumni Association Board of Governors Semi-Annual Meeting Friday, October 23, 2015 Meeting Minutes I. Call to Order The semi-annual meeting of the CUA Alumni Association Board of Governors was called to order at 4:05 p.m. II. Opening Prayer The opening prayer was offered by Rev. James Sabak, National Chaplain. III. Approval of Meeting Minutes from April 10, 2015 Rev. Frank Donio, S.A.C., National President of the Alumni Association, asked the Board for approval of the minutes from the spring meeting on April 10 as distributed. One misspelling was noted. The minutes were approved unanimously. IV. University Advancement Report Scott Rembold Father Donio introduced Scott Rembold to the board. Mr. Rembold noted that this is the start of his fifth month with the University, that he was pleased to join the Board of Governors and was here to provide information about current Advancement activities and our plans to build on recent successes and bring the University to the next level. He noted that we raised $30 million dollars in our last fiscal year, which is a historic high, and presented his six goals for the fiscal year coming up. Goal 1: Raise $35 million dollars, including: $1 million in commitments for the Papal visit (as of 10/16/15, we have $850,000); $2.2 million for the CUA Fund while also increasing alumni participation from 8.5% to 10%; $1 million in commitments for a new residence hall; $500,000 in new gifts for Murphy's; and launch the fundraising campaign for the School of Business building renovation of Maloney Hall. As of last week, we have just about $13 million, which means we are 36% to goal. We are a little bit behind last year, but that had to do with the Cardinal Dinner revenue from 2013 and We expect to catch up by January or early February. The aim for the program is that we should be at about $50 million in the future.
2 Goal 2: New embedded gift officer model to increase fundraising efforts across the institution. Right now, we are a centralized office with major gift officers on assignment to schools and regions. We are moving to a model where major gift officers are embedded in schools. The effort is to empower major gift officers to work directly with deans and to establish funding priorities on a school-based level. Key features of this initiative include co-investing between Advancement Office and schools, including athletics. So far, Architecture, TRS, NCSSS, A&S, and Engineering, and Athletics have expressed interest in hosting full-time gift officers. Traditionally, the School of Law and the School of Business and Economics have had embedded fundraising. Goal 3: Staff up to support increased activity. In addition to supporting school-based fundraising model, we are planning to hire gift officers in planned giving, corporate foundations, as well as staff in data management and communications. Goal 4: Improve operations and performance metrics. We are developing career trajectories for our staff, as well as upgrading our performance system and databases, as well as adopting new discovery and relationship-building software. These efforts will help us to reach out to new individuals who are in positions to be major contributors and make sure we have the staff and tools needed to cultivate and steward those relationships. Mr. Rembold also added that the Advancement team will move to O Connell Hall in the spring of Goal 5: Increase alumni engagement. There are a lot of activities around this goal. We are working on an alumni survey to touch base with our current constituency. Our a new data services position within the office of alumni relations will help to support better tracking of our graduates and improve the quality of our data, and increase and address collection. In addition, we are: implementing a student/alumni shadow program; recruiting young alumni as college admissions representatives; elevating the reunion giving program to the next level. We are also extending our alumni regional groups. Goal 6: Begin Campaign Planning. We hope to launch a capital campaign in With the prioritization of the strategic plan initiatives, we plan to take a fresh look at our trustee leadership and board composition, and develop mechanisms to build the pipeline of principal prospects. Mr. Rembold mentioned how blessed he is to have joined CUA with the coming of our Holy Father. It was a moment of visibility for the institution that we have not seen before, and he hopes we can use the energy gained to deepen our existing relationships, secure new support, and attract students. He also reported that 500 of our top donors joined us to celebrate the Mass. V. Alumni President s Report Father Frank recounted the story of meeting Ned Dwyer in 1999 in Baltimore, when he was first invited to serve on the Board of Governors. He said it has been a tremendous opportunity to serve alma mater and to work pastorally on campus.
3 Father Frank thanked the past governors, the office of alumni relations staff, and Frank Persico and the executive committee. VI.
