8 General Description and Purpose Fiske Osmometers are devices for the measurement of the osmotic concentration of aqueous solutions with freezing points between 0 and -6 C. Some examples are serum, urine, parenteral infusion solutions, laboratory control solutions and fixatives. Application information is available upon request. The Service Manual This Service Manual contains: instructions for performing repairs. guides for troubleshooting operational and mechanical problems. circuit system illustrations. information about replacement parts and service repairs. This manual is designed to assist service technicians, and does not imply a license to perform repairs without proper qualifications. Use a telephone as close to the instrument as possible in order to facilitate making recommended diagnostic checks. A service technician may assist in making minor repairs over the phone, providing you with recommended parts (or part numbers), or may issue an authorization (RMA) to ship the instrument for factory repair. The RMA procedure is as follows: 1. Contact Fiske Associates to obtain an RMA. 2. Pack and ship the instrument in its original carton. Do not send instrument supply items. 3. 9 Safety / Regulatory Information To reduce the risk of bodily injury, electric shock, fire, and damage to your instrument, please read and observe the following precautions. If the product is used in a manner not in accordance with the equipment design, operating instructions or manufacturer's recommendations, the operation of the product may be impaired to the extent that a safety hazard is created. Do not attempt to perform electrical work if you are not fully qualified. This manual is not a substitute for electrical training. Symbol Conventions The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the presence of important operating and maintenance (servicing) instructions in the literature accompanying this product. The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the presence of uninsulated dangerous voltage within the product's enclosure that may be of sufficient magnitude to constitute risk of electric shock to persons. The static symbol within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the presence of internal components that could be damaged by static electricity. This static symbol is intended to alert the user to the presence of a specific component that could be damaged by static electricity. This symbol indicates the presence of alternating current (AC). General Cautions This product should be operated only with the type of power source indicated on the product s electrical ratings label. Refer to the installation instructions included with the product. If the power cord provided is replaced for any reason or if an alternate cord is used, the cord must be approved for use in the local country. The power cord must be approved for the product s listed operating voltage and be rated at least 20% greater than the ampere ratings marked on the product s electrical ratings label. The cord end that connects to the product must have an IEC connector. Plug the product into an approved grounded electrical outlet. Do not disable the power cord s grounding plug. If an extension cord or power strip is used, make sure that the cord or strip is rated for the product, and that the total ampere ratings of all products plugged into the extension cord or strip do not exceed 80% of the cord s or strip s rating limit. 10 lar attention to the plug, electrical outlet, and the point where the cord exits the product. Do not pull on cords and cables. When unplugging cords or cables, grasp the corresponding connector. Do not install or use this product in any area subject to extreme short-term temperature variations, or locations that exceed the specified operating environment temperatures. Never use this product in a wet area. To avoid injury or fire hazard, do not operate this product in an explosive atmosphere. Do not install or use the product on an unstable, non-level work surface. Do not operate this product with the covers removed or unsecured. Service & Maintenance Cautions Unplug the power cord prior to opening or removing covers, or else you may be exposed to electric shock, excessive temperatures, or mechanical hazards. Performing service or maintenance not detailed in the User s Guide, with or without this Service Manual, should only be done by a qualified service technician. Never restrict airflow into or out of the product. Occasionally, check the air vents for blockage. Wipe the exterior of the product with a soft, damp cloth as needed. Using cleaning products other than those specified, may discolor or damage the finish. If the product requires service for any of the following reasons, unplug the product from the electrical outlet and refer service to a qualified service technician. - The power cord, extension cord, power strip or power input module is damaged. - Liquid has been spilled into the interior of the product. - A foreign object has fallen into the product. - The product has been dropped or damaged by a falling object. - There are noticeable signs of overheating or a burning odor. - The product does not operate normally when you follow the operating procedures. - The main supply fuse(s) or any internal fuse(s) continually fail. A discharge of static electricity from contact with the human body or other conductor may damage system boards or static sensitive devices. Never perform internal maintenance without following recommended static protection procedures. The product is equipped with operator accessible fuses. If a fuse blows, it may be due to a power surge or failure of a component. Replace the fuse only once. If the fuse blows a second time, it is probably caused by failure of a component part. If this occurs, refer service to qualified service personnel. Always replace the fuse with one of the same rating, voltage, and type. Never replace the fuse with one of a higher current rating. When servicing the product, use only factory-specified parts. WARNING: When returning this product for service, or shipping this product to a second location, remove all hazardous specimens and decontaminate the product before packaging for shipment. 11 Hazardous Material Cautions WARNING: Handle all biohazardous materials according to established good laboratory practices and follow your institution s exposure control plan. Persons handling human blood and body fluid samples must be trained in blood-borne hazards and observe universal precautions. Universal precautions is an approach to infection control, where all human blood and body fluids are treated as if known to be infectious. Use personal protective equipment such as gloves, gowns, etc., to prevent exposure. Store biohazardous materials in regulated waste containers and dispose of these materials in a safe and acceptable manner that is in compliance with all country, state and local requirements. If a biohazardous material is spilled on or inside the equipment, decontaminate the equipment using a 1% bleach solution, or as outlined by those policies and procedures established within your institution. To avoid injury or fire hazard, do not operate this product in an explosive atmosphere. Symbol Conventions This symbol indicates conformity to relevant European directives. This symbol indicates the product was tested to conform to relevant Canadian and U.S. safety standards by Intertek Testing Services NA, Inc. The ETL mark is approved in the United States as a Nationally Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL) by OSHA, and in Canada by the Standards Council of Canada. In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Device complying with EU Directive 98/79/EC. EXAMPLES ONLY This symbol, depending upon its location, indicates the assembly, component, and/or product are free of lead. In respect to its inclusion on a circuit component or assembly, the following must be adhered to when servicing. Failure to do so may result in defects caused by dissimilar metals. 1. Do not repair or modify using a lead-containing solder. 2. Do not repair or modify using any soldering tools that have been in contact with lead-containing solders. 3. 18 Systems Overview Power Supply - Part No The power entry assembly interfaces the AC voltage presented to the instrument with the power supply. The power supply provides +15VDC to the main printed circuit board. The thermoelectric and solenoid operate at +15VDC. The fan operates at +12VDC. Keypad - Part No The keypad provides a two-button interface between the user and the instrument. The second line of the display is used to indicate the function of each key. The software changes the button description on the second line of the display. Back Panel I/O Board Description - Part No. PCB100/PCB140 This board contains all external connections for the printer, RS-232, and barcode ports. Application Board Description - Part No. PCB115 All input/output operations are performed by this printed circuit board. The board provides local regulation for the analog and digital portions of the instrument. There are two 24 bit sigma-delta analog-to-digital converters (ADC) that interface the sample and block probes to the microprocessor. The board also provides the interface to the keypad, display, and Back Panel I/O Board. Central Processor Unit (CPU) Board Description - Part No. PCB120 The microprocessor is a 16 bit 80C186EB, a member of the 80X86 Intel family of microprocessors. The microprocessor runs at 32MHz and has an address space of 1 megabyte. The microprocessor executes the program stored in the 256 kilobytes of Flash EPROMs. The board uses a real-time clock with battery-backed RAM for storage of operating parameters, and contains 256 kilobytes of static RAM. 210 Board Set Description - Part No This board set is made up of the following: PCB115, PCB120, and software. Instrument Software Update Your instrument software contained in two flash EPROMs on the main processor board may be updated via the RS-232 port. Such software updates are made available as new features and other improvements are added during the life cycle of the instrument. For information on the availability of software updates, contact Fiske Associates or an authorized distributor. 23 Maintaining the Instrument 1. Cleaning Air Vents Examine the air vents on the underside and rear of the instrument to ensure that they are unobstructed by dust or debris. 2. Cleaning the Instrument Exterior Use a mixture of warm water and soap. A mixture of Isopropyl Alcohol may also be used to further decontaminate the exterior. Do not use abrasive cleansers or scouring pads, as they may mar the surface. Do not allow liquid to enter the cooling chamber or other portions of the instrument. 23 Fiske Micro-Osmometer Service Manual

25 Solenoid Cleaning Procedure Use this cleaning procedure if your samples are not freezing properly and you suspect that the solenoid impactor is not moving freely, perhaps due to the accumulation of sample residue (an unlikely event) or some other form of debris within the freezing chamber. C 4. Loosen the Solenoid retainer mounting screw (B) and rotate the retainer out of the way. Tools Needed: Phillips screwdriver. Instruction: Warning-Hazardous Voltage Warning-Internal components may be damaged by static electricity. CAUTION: Improper connections may cause damage to the instrument. 1. Place a dry chamber cleaner in the cooling chamber. 2. Turn off the power and unplug the instrument. Remove the five screws securing the rear cover, and remove the instrument cover. 3. Remove the four screws (A) holding the Sample Handling Assembly to the housing. Tip the unit onto the back panel and loosen the screw securing the shroud to the base. Return the unit to the upright position and remove the Sample Handling Assembly. A D 5. Withdraw the solenoid plunger (C) while leaving the solenoid body (D) in place. CAUTION: Care must be taken when removing the solenoid plunger, to not lose the spring or spring retainer. 6. Clean the smaller-diameter tip and the solenoid plunger with a 70% isopropanol solution. Do not use any abrasive for this cleaning procedure. 7. Dampen the wooden end of a cottontipped applicator with a 70% isopropanol solution, and insert it through the solenoid body into the smaller-diameter plunger hole until it reaches the chamber cleaner. Move the applicator in and out to scrub the sides of the hole. 8. Return the cleaned solenoid plunger to the solenoid body, secure the retainer, and remove the chamber cleaner. 9. Replace the Sample Handling Assembly and reassemble the unit by reversing steps 2-3. B 25 Fiske Micro-Osmometer Service Manual

27 4. Troubleshooting

29 Introduction All troubleshooting must be performed by qualified service technicians who have basic electrical troubleshooting skills and the proper equipment (i.e., voltage meter). This manual does not imply a license to troubleshoot or perform repairs without proper qualifications. CAUTION: Some troubleshooting requires the instrument to be turned on while the cover is removed. Use extreme caution when operating the instrument without the cover. Hazardous voltages are present at the AC input and power supply. The troubleshooting chart in this section lists problems that may occur while operating the instrument. The left column describes the symptom, the middle column lists checks to determine what is causing the problem, and the right column suggests an action to resolve the problem. Follow the checks in the order they are listed. If you perform checks out of order, you risk replacing the wrong part. If, after performing all checks, there is still a problem, call the Fiske Associates Product Service Department. See Service Assistance (Section 1 - Introduction) for the appropriate phone number to call. Diagnostic Menu The Diagnostic Menu [DIAG] contains items that allow discrete testing of each component of the instrument. Enter the Diagnostic Menu by scrolling to it, and pushing the [DIAG] button. A description of the available tests follows. 1. A/D Tests A/D Tests are designed to check the performance of the cooling assembly, and the efficiency of heat transfer between the components of the cooling assembly. The result of an A/D Test gives a "duty cycle", expressed as a percentage indication of how much power the thermoelectric cooler uses to reach an operating temperature sensed by the block probe. An increasing duty cycle indicates deteriorating performance of the cooling assembly. Pressing the left button will change the set or selected cooling assembly temperature. Pressing the right button will change the display from resistance to temperature. The sample probe readings are also displayed. 2. Probe Bin Test The bin test is used to determine the resistance of the sample probe at a specific temperature. ( C is used for convenience, which corresponds to the 50 mosm/kg calibration standard.) When a new sample probe is installed, the bin number must be determined and entered into the instrument from the Setup Menu. With age or hard use, the resistance of a probe may change. It is therefore useful to recheck the bin test as part of a routine diagnostic check. 3. Solenoid Test The Solenoid Test will manually trigger the freeze solenoid. The solenoid should give an audible impact immediately on pressing the [START] button. 4. Display/Print Test This test sends a complete character set to the display, serial port and printer port. This test will identify any problems with these areas. 5. Key/Beeper Test Proper function of the keypad can be confirmed by this test. As each button is pressed, [*******] appears above the button and a beep is heard. 29 Fiske Micro-Osmometer Service Manual

30 6. Barcode Test This menu selection is for testing a barcode scanner. Scanned information will appear on the display, and a short beep will occur. Additional scans may be performed until the test is cancelled. Please note that the barcode scanner may also beep, if its beeper is not disabled. 38 5. Notice the length of probe cable as you remove it from the block. Cut any tie wraps used to create the service loop, and then remove the block probe cable from the Cooling Assembly. 6. Insert the tip of the syringe (filled with thermal grease) all the way into the block probe hole (D). Inject grease into the hole while slowly withdrawing the tip, so that there are no air pockets. Fill the hole with grease. (The thermal grease should surround the probe when it is inserted.) 7. Insert the new block probe cable into the block probe hole until it will not go any further. Insert slowly so the probe is not damaged, allowing the thermal grease to be displaced by the probe. Once fully inserted, hold the probe cable in place until excess grease has stopped oozing out and the block probe remains in place. Wipe away any excess grease. 8. Note the block bin number located on the block probe cable (see step 9). Reassemble the unit by reversing steps Set the new block bin number. 10. 40 5. Remove the Dress screw (F) that attaches the sample probe cover to the probe mount. Pull the probe cover forward to remove it. G H I 6. Unplug the sample probe cable from the two-terminal connector (G) at the top of the probe housing (needle-nose pliers may facilitate this step). Note: Do not pull the connector by its cable. 7. Remove the two Phillips probe-mounting screws and washers (H), and pull the sample probe up and out of the head. Place the sample probe cover and the sample probe aside, to be reassembled later. CAUTION: The sample probe tip is very fragile. Extra care must be taken to prevent breakage when out of the instrument. 9. Note the block probe bin number located on the block probe cable (see step 13). 10. Secure the probe alignment fixture in the probe mount and lower the fixture into the well of the new Cooling Assembly. Hold the fixture in place and tighten the mounting screws to the heatsink brackets. Test for proper alignment by sliding the probe fixture in and out of the well, and adjust if necessary. 11. Remove the probe alignment fixture and remount the sample probe. 12. Replace the Sample Handling Assembly and reassemble the unit by reversing steps Set the new block probe bin number and recalibrate the instrument. 8. Remove the four 6-32 screws (I) that mount the Cooling Assembly to the 210 heat sink brackets. Clean the top surface of the probe mount. Replace the spacer (E). Being careful to avoid damage to its thermister tip, mount the new probe using the front probe mounting screw and nylon washer. Tighten the screw enough to prevent the probe from moving up and down, but still allowing the probe to move from side to side. 60 6. Plug the sample probe cable connector (C) firmly into the two pins at the top rear of the sample probe housing. Replace the nylon washer at the rear probe mounting hole. 7. Guide the end of the retaining clip between the red and black leads at the back of the sample probe cable connector. Position the ring end of the clip on top of the nylon washer, then reinstall the rear probe mounting screw. Again, tighten the screw enough to prevent the probe from moving up and down, but still allowing the probe to move from side to side. Refer to the illustration for proper orientation of the retaining clip. 8. Place a sample tube in the sample well. Move the sample probe head so that the sample probe is inserted into the tube. Apply firm downward pressure on the top of the sample probe to automatically center it in the sample tube and well. Tighten the front probe mounting screw. 9. Using a finger to restrain the retaining clip from turning, tighten the rear probe mounting screw. Move the head up and down, while observing the sample tube. When properly centered, the probe should slide out of the sample tube without pulling it up, and then should slide into the sample tube without pushing it to the side. If necessary, loosen screws and repeat step 7 to properly center the sample tube. 10. A factory-determined sample probe bin number is marked on the probe (F). Compare the bin numbers on the new and the old sample probes. If the bin numbers are not the same, record the new bin number in the Service Log, located in the back of the Service Manual. 11. Raise the sample probe head and replace the probe cover and its mounting screw. 12. Make sure an empty sample tube is in the sample-cooling well and lower the sample probe head all the way down. 13. Plug in the instrument and turn on the power. Select the option to Run Diagnostics. 14. If the bin number on the new sample probe is the same as the bin number on the old sample probe, it is not necessary to reset the probe configuration. If the bin number on the new sample probe is not the same as the bin number on the old sample probe, enter the Setup menu and select the Set Probe Bin # s option. Remove and save the probe mounting screws and nylon washers (B). A 4. Pull the sample probe (F) being replaced up, then unplug the sample probe cable connector (C) from the two-terminal connector at the top of the sample probe housing (needle-nose pliers may facilitate this step). Once disconnected, finish removing the probe from the probe mount. Remove and save the spacer (E). Note: Do not pull the connector by its cable. CAUTION: The sample probe tip is very fragile. 62 5. Clean the top surface of the probe mount. Replace the spacer (E). Being careful to avoid damage to its thermistor tip, begin to insert the tip through the hole in the probe mount. Plug the sample probe cable connector (C) into the two pins at the top rear of the sample probe housing, then complete mounting the new sample probe in the probe mount using the probe mounting screws and nylon washers. Tighten the screws enough to prevent the sample probe from moving up and down, but still allowing the probe to move from side to side. 6. Make sure the wires from the sample probe cable are down in the slot provided in the probe mount. 7. Place a sample tube in the sample well. Move the sample probe head so that the sample probe is inserted into the tube. Apply firm downward pressure on the top of the sample probe to automatically center it in the sample tube and well. Tighten both probe mounting screws. 8. Move the head up and down, while observing the sample tube. When properly centered, the probe should slide out of the tube without pulling it up, and then should slide into the sample tube without pushing it to the side. If necessary, loosen the probe mounting screws and repeat step 7 to properly center the sample probe. 10. Raise the sample probe head and replace the probe cover and its mounting screw (A). Make sure that the wire from the sample probe cable is captured within the slot in the probe mount. 11. Make sure an empty sample tube is in the sample cooling well and lower the sample probe head all the way down. 12. Plug in the instrument and turn on the power. Select the option to Run Diagnostics. 13. If the bin number on the new sample probe is the same as the bin number of the old sample probe, it is not necessary to reset the probe configuration. If the bin number on the new sample probe is not the same as the bin number on the old sample probe, then enter the Setup menu and select Set Probe Bin # s option. Set the sample probe bin number, accordingly. 14. Recalibrate the instrument. 9. A factory-determined sample probe bin number is marked on the probe (F). Compare the bin numbers on the new and old sample probes. 68 Installation Please follow the precautions listed below when setting up your printer. They are designed to help you keep your printer working at its best. 5. Slide the paper through the slot between the paper compartment and the printer compartment. You can slide the paper in about one-quarter inch before it stops. Plug your printer into an appropriate grounded outlet. Place your printer on a flat hard surface, like a tabletop. Keep your printer out of direct sunlight. Connect the centronics cable to the 36-pin centronics connector on the printer, and then connect the DB25 cable to the female DB25 connector on the back panel of the instrument. Connect the DIN cable to the printer power jack on the back panel of the instrument, and then to the DC input on the printer. Installing the Paper 1. Remove the printer cover by pressing on the groove pattern to pop the front edge up. Lift off the cover. 2. Press the rocker switch to the left. The light will go off. 6. While holding the paper in place, press the rocker switch to the paper feed position. The printer will activate, and a rubber roller will pull the paper into the printer compartment. Hold the switch in the paper feed position until the paper emerges from the top of the printer mechanism. 7. When an inch of paper has emerged from the top of the printer, release the paper feed button and pull the paper through the printer until several inches are exposed. 3. Unroll several inches of the paper. 4. Cut a straight edge on the paper roll if it is jagged. This will facilitate inserting the paper into the printer. 8. 69 2. Push down on the embossed grooves on one or both sides of the printer cover until the printer cover tilts. 9. Push the back of the printer cover down and into place. 10. Press the front of the printer cover down to lock in place. 3. Lift off the printer cover. Push down on the right side of the ribbon cartridge where it is marked PUSH, and remove the cartridge. 4. Install the new cartridge. Be sure the ink cartridge is inserted firmly to prevent weak or irregular printing. The cartridge must be properly seated and aligned for best printing. Changing an Ink Ribbon When printing becomes faint or difficult to see, the ribbon may be dried out or in need of replacement. Before replacing the cartridge, try advancing the ribbon to a new section by holding down the paper feed switch for several seconds. 5. Turn the cartridge clockwise (marked by an arrow) to stretch the ribbon. If the print impression is still weak, purchase a new ribbon cartridge (Product #330541) and install it using the following instructions. 1. 70 Printer Test and Setup The printer can be tested and setup using the steps described in this section. However, please note that the printer has been setup to work with your instrument, as shipped. No setup changes are necessary for correct operation. Before attempting to change your printer settings, be sure to disconnect the data cable from the instrument. Printer Test Follow these steps to test the printer: 1. Unplug the printer at the outlet or at the back of the printer. 2. Press and hold the right side of the rocker switch as you plug in the printer. The printer will print out a list of the current configuration settings, and then run a continuous print test. To stop the print test, press either side of the rocker switch. Below is a sample of what is printed when you do the print test. Setup Menu Follow these steps to access the Setup Menu: 1. Unplug the printer at the outlet or at the back of the printer. 2. Press and hold the left side of the rocker switch as you plug in the printer. The printer will advance the paper. 3. After the paper advance has stopped, count 3-5 seconds and release the switch. The following is printed: *** SETUP MENU *** CONFIGURE...
