Encourage the children to repeat them. Name the flashcards again and encourage the children to repeat the words and copy your mimes: for snowing, mime looking up at the sky and wriggle your fingers like snow falling slowly; for raining, mime putting up an umbrella; for windy, mime flying a kite; for cloudy, draw a cloud in the air; for sunny, draw a big sun with outstretched arms; for foggy, wrinkle your forehead, put your hand over your brow and mime feeling your way. Repeat several times until the children are confident. 3 Play The pirate dance! (CD 2 track 29) Stick the weather flashcards around the class. Play the CD. Encourage the children to dance on the spot or around the class. Pause the CD when the children hear It s snowing and encourage them to mime holding a telescope as they focus on the snowing flashcard. Repeat with the rest of the weather flashcards. Play the CD again and encourage the children to mime each kind of weather when they hear the corresponding phrase. CD2 29 The pirate dance! Play the CD and encourage the children to listen and point to the correct flashcards as they are mentioned. Play the song again and do the actions. Encourage the children to do the same. Give out the Pupil s Books and help the children find the worksheet, or give out the separate worksheets, depending on which you prefer. Point to the first small weather picture at the bottom of the page. Say What s the weather like? Look! It s sunny! Encourage the children to point to the sunny picture on their worksheet. Repeat It s sunny! and encourage the children to join in. Say Trace the sunny picture! Demonstrate this by tracing the picture with a pencil or your finger. Encourage the children to trace the sunny picture on their worksheet. Repeat with It s windy, It s snowing, It s foggy, It s cloudy and It s raining. Encourage all the children to name it and do the mime. Repeat with the remaining flashcards. 4 Play Let s go on a treasure hunt! (Flip over Book page 3) Put the foggy flashcard in the treasure chest. Put on the puppet. Point to the map at the beginning of the Flip over Book and say Look! It s Captain Jack s treasure hunt! Get Captain Jack to fly around in excitement. Repeat with all the flashcards until the children are confident. 3 Play Pass the secret! Optional activity Put the weather flashcards in the treasure chest. Encourage a volunteer to choose a weather flashcard and look at it without letting the others see. Encourage the child to put the flashcard back into the treasure chest and to sit in the circle and whisper the weather phrase from the flashcard, e.g. It s windy, to the child at their side, who continues to pass the secret around the circle. The last child says It s windy! aloud and finds the correct flashcard in the treasure chest. Encourage all the children to say It s windy! and do the mime. Repeat with all the flashcards and different volunteers. 4 Sing The story song. (CD 2 track 35) Before singing The story song you may wish to revisit the story as outlined in Lesson 2, Activity 6. Play the song and do the actions. Encourage the children to copy you. Play the song again. Encourage the children to stand up, sing along and do the actions. (See Lesson 2, Activity 6 for the audio script.) 5 Play Captain Jack s phonics! (CD 2 tracks 36 & 37) Show the children the windy and wet flashcards and encourage them to name them. Flash the flashcards at the children and ask them to name them. Speed up the process as the children get more confident. Repeat the words after the children, exaggerating the /w/. Stick the flashcards on opposite sides of the board. Play Windy and wet. The children dance to the music. Pause the CD when either word is spoken. Get Captain Jack to fly around in excitement. Mime waving a magic wand over the treasure chest and get Captain Jack to say Abracadabra, 1, 2, 3! What s in the treasure chest? Let s see! Take the wet and dry flashcards out of the treasure chest and show them in turn to the children. Name them several times. Encourage the children to repeat Wet! and Dry! Put one flashcard behind your back and gradually reveal it. Get the children to shout Wet! or Dry! Alternate the flashcards. Show the wet flashcard. Make Captain Jack say Wet! Mime shaking off dripping water. Encourage the children to say Wet! several times and to do the mime. Show the dry flashcard and make Captain Jack say Dry! Pretend to be wearing a big towel and put your arms round your shoulders as if giving yourself a hug. Stick the two flashcards on different walls. Say Wet! Encourage the children to point at the correct flashcard and do the mime. Repeat with Dry! Repeat several times. When the children are confident, speed up the activity. 4 Play Wet and dry clothes! Show the clothes flashcards from Captain Jack 1. Encourage the children to name them several times and mime putting on each item of clothing. Put the clothes flashcards on the board and encourage the children to name them as you do this. Put on the puppet. Say Close your eyes! Get Captain Jack to hide the wet flashcard behind the trousers flashcard. Ask the children to open their eyes. Encourage them to say Wet (hat / jumper, etc.)! Point to the sun on your worksheet and ask What s the weather like? Encourage the children to say It s sunny! and to point to the sun on their worksheet. Point to the picture of the rain and ask What s the weather like? Encourage the children to say It s raining! and to point to the rain picture on their worksheet. Point to the first jumper hanging on the line on your worksheet. Say Is it wet or dry? Encourage the children to say Dry! Point to the trousers hanging on the line and repeat the question. Encourage the children to say Wet! Repeat for the rest of the clothes on the line. Say Point to the sun and encourage the children to point to the sun on their worksheet. Say Match the sun to the dry clothes and demonstrate drawing a line from the sun to the first jumper with either your finger or a pencil. Encourage the children to do the same on their worksheet. Continue in the same way with the other dry clothes. Repeat the process with the rain and the wet clothes. Point to the first jumper and say Blue! Then point to the trousers and second jumper and say Red! Blue! Encourage the children to point to the clothes on their worksheet and say the colours. Point to the second trousers and ask What colour are the trousers? Encourage the children to say Red! Say Colour the trousers red and demonstrate on your worksheet. Encourage the children to do the correct action before you reveal the whole flashcard. Speed up the activity as the children become confident. You may need to use The calm down chant if the children become too excited (see Introduction page 20). 3 Play Captain Jack s whispering game. Organise the children into a circle. Put on the puppet. Tell the children that Captain Jack has a secret that he wants to tell them. Put the spring, summer, autumn and winter flashcards in the centre of the circle. Get Captain Jack to whisper It s autumn! The child whispers this to the next child, who passes it on. This continues around the circle until it reaches the last child. This child stands up and picks up the correct flashcard from the middle of the circle. Encourage the child to show it to the rest of the class and ask them what the secret is. Encourage them to say Autumn! If they get it wrong, give them the correct answer and congratulate them for trying.
