1 Summit High School Summit, NJ Grade 10/Health Education Length of Course: 9 Weeks Course of Study Driver Education Course Description: Driver s Education is scheduled for students during their sophomore year. The course runs for an entire Marking Period. The class meets every day. The New Jersey Driver Manual supplied by the state of New Jersey is frequently referred to during the class. The objective of the course is to prepare the students for the state exam and to promote Defensive Driving Habits. The students are graded in several areas. Class Participation, Writing Activities, Group Worksheets, Group Discussion, Oral Presentations, and a Final Exam. The Final Exam is given at the end of the Marking Period. It is known as the Motor Vehicle Commission s Written Knowledge Exam. To earn a passing grade on the test, a student must score 80% or better. The Knowledge Exam is also offered at the Motor Vehicle Commission in Springfield for those students who do not earn at least an 80%. Passing the Knowledge Exam is the first step in the process of getting the Student Learner s Permit. The next step is enrolling in a state approved Driving School for driving lessons. The student must be 16 years old to start the driving lessons. (16 year old students must enroll in a driving school to get their permit, 17 year old students do not need to enroll with a driving school, it is optional) Once the student completes the lessons, the Driving School will give the student their permit. Driving Schools range in price. There are many reputable companies in the area. Standard 2.1 WELLNESS All students will learn and apply health promotion concepts and skills to support a healthy, active lifestyle. Big Ideas: Develop a process to identify safe paths of travel while performing basic driving skills. What would happen if roads didn t have Students will understand that

2 markings? How would the lack of knowledge about signs impede the driving process and tie up traffic? How would looking in one spot hinder or help your driving? All roadways are regulated by specific roadway markings that make the driving task safe and efficient. The warning lights in the vehicle illuminate when the vehicle needs maintenance. Making safe driving decisions help to keep traffic moving safely and efficiently. (Cumulative Progress Indicators) D1 Students will determine the causes and outcomes of intentional and unintentional injuries in adolescents and young adults and propose prevention strategies. Instructional Focus: Recognition and understanding of signs, signals and roadway markings and their affect on safe driving practices. To become familiar with traffic cues and strategies to prevent accidents. Sample Assessments: Quizzes, group discussion. Instructional Strategies: Learners will make signs to be displayed in the classroom, and discuss other ways of managing traffic. Big Idea: Summarize New Jersey motor vehicle laws and regulations and determine their impac on the incidence of crashes and injuries. If there were vague rules and consequences related to the driving task, what would traffic look like? How does differentiating the severity of the penalty encourage compliance? Students will understand that Following the rules and safety procedures creates a safer roadway. It is essential to recognize the ramifications of their actions when behind the wheel D 5 Students will: Develop an appreciation for law enforcement as a way to keep themselves and others safe on New Jersey roadways. 4 national or global health issue including but not limited to organ/tissue donation. What current book/movie recently enlightened many on the struggles of tissue and organ donation within a family? If you could live with out a kidney and have a normal life would you be a donor? What would be a reason not to donate your organs once you were brain dead? D 5 Summarize New Jersey motor vehicle laws and regulations and determine their impact on health and safety (e.g., organ/tissue donation, seatbelt use, and the use of hand-held devices). Students will understand that Tissue/organ donation has a positive affect on multiple individuals. By being proactive and declaring that they wish to be an organ donor they have the ability to enhance the life of another individual. Instructional Focus: Learners will become familiar with organ/tissue donation and how it affects more than one family. Sample Assessments: Active discussion on the pros and cons of organ donation. Instructional Strategies: Learners will participate in a program that discusses the need for organ donation and how it can help save many lives. How do you determine your target group when developing a marketing strategy about organ donation? People need to become familiar with the goals associated with organ donation and how their participation in the project will make a positive impact. No matter how old a person is they have a gift within their bodies and can make a difference in the lives of others if they donate their organs if they become brain dead. Developing a marketing strategy can show the positive side of the donation process. (Cumulative Progress Indicators) D.1 Students will: Plan and implement an advocacy strategy to stimulate action on a state, national, or global health issue, including but not limited to, organ/tissue donation. Students will understand that driving is a social task and they are responsible for the safety of other roadway users and their own safety. Student will understand that the ramifications of negative behavior on the roadway impact not only them but also many others.

6 (Cumulative Progress Indicators) C.2 Students will: Judge how individual or group adherence, or lack of adherence, to core ethical values impacts the local, state, national, and worldwide community. Instructional Focus: Discuss core ethical values and how there is a multitude of values throughout the world and all regions in the state and nation. Sample Assessments: Use of the internet to examine the cause and affect of group adherence, or lack of adherence, to core ethical values impacts the local, state, national, and worldwide community.
