10 Research has shown that 3 things will help your child survive! 1. GDL Legislation 2. Parent involvement in the learn to drive process and continued involvement after licensure 3. Provide Advanced Driving Skill Instruction.

11 CO Driver Permit 2 Forms of ID Certified Birth Certificate, SSN card, passport, etc. Additional Documentation Proof of Insurance 2 documents proving your residency Must be within 1 year of date of issuance Documentation of enrollment in state approved Driver Awareness Program DMV Vision and Written Test Affidavit of Liability DR 2460

12 CO Driver Permit Types Driver Education 15 years of age to 15.5 Affidavit of enrollment in a driver education course (36 hours). Driver Awareness Permit 15.5 to 16 Documentation of attendance at a state approved Driver Awareness Program.

13 Colorado GDL Laws for Permits No Cell Phone Usage while driving No Texting at any age. Under 16 YO can only drive with persons signing the affidavit of liability and one other predesignated adult with a CO license. At 16 YO, youth can operate a vehicle with a licensed driver of 21.

14 To Obtain a Restricted Drivers License- Must hold learners permit for 12 months. Show 50 hrs driving with 10 hr. at night (signed log sheet) Must pass DMV driving test (By Appointment) All learner permits expire after 3 years.

15 Rules applying to licensed drivers under age 18. Restricted License. No passengers under age 21 until the driver holds valid driver s license for at least 6 months. (siblings and passengers with medical emergencies excepted. No more that one passenger under age 21 until the driver holds a valid driver s license for at least one year. Exceptions: If your parent or guardian is in the car with you, or if there is an adult with a valid license over 21, or if the passengers under 21 are immediate family members and all wearing seatbelts.

16 Restricted License Driver Requirements until 18 YO. No more than one passenger in the front seat of a vehicle driven by a person under age 18 All passengers with drivers under eighteen must wear seatbelts.

17 Curfew No driving between midnight and 5 a.m. until the driver holds a valid driver s license for at least one year, unless accompanied by a parent/legal guardian. (There are some exceptions.)

20 Driving Basics Seating Position By Audi Club SEAT UPRIGHT KNEES BENT Seat Belt Position Sit in the seat. Adjust seat to allow full extension of clutch & brake pedals with 15 degrees of bend in the legs. With arms extended, wrists should drape over the steering wheel. Hands should be a 9 and 3 o clock. Adjust mirrors. Tighten safety belts once situated.

31 Off-Road Excursion Reduce speed to under 25 mph Turn wheel ¼ turn to climb back on to road surface If road edge is rubbing tire, move a little further off the road (less than 6 inches) until speed is under 25 mph and you can climb back onto the road surface.

36 Colorado Teen Distraction 51% of teens admit to sending or receiving text messages while driving. 66% admit to talking on their cell phone while driving. 97% of CO teens believe text messaging while driving is dangerous. 38% of CO Teens admit to taking their eyes off the road when texting while driving. 37 Legal Liability The Driver can be charged with misdemeanors or felonies as a result of a crash. Incarceration Removal of driving privileges Fines Removal of other privileges

38 Civil Liability-until 25 YO if receiving some support. Civil awards can force the family to pay for medical expenses of victims. Compensate families of victims. Civil liability can also award other damages. Results All family assets confiscated, income garnished for as long a necessary to pay award. (Family left enough money to live at the poverty level.)

39 Insurance State minimum is not enough, consider an umbrella policy for a minimum of $1 million. Evaluate assets and ability to pay judgment. Parents citation history and teen driver history affect ability to obtain an umbrella policy. Type of vehicle to rate the teen on: Vehicle with the safety systems. No SUVs, pickups, or minivans. In good repair with good tires. One that you can pay cash for and not put comprehensive on it. Need liability!

40 Parent Involvement A key factor in saving teen lives!

42 ..The Checkpoints Program teaches parents about the need to establish initial restrictions on teen driving, but also helps keep the restrictions in place at least 12 months if not longer.

49 WHAT HAPPENS TO MY INSIDES? All of your organs move forward towards the crash. What stops your organs? Your bones and skin. This is why so many people break their ribs because their heart and other organs crash into the ribs with such force that it breaks them.

50 The only thing between the car and the road is the small contact patch on each tire. Tread Depth is Critical Only replace the original tires with the exact same size tire. Tires need to be properly inflated at all times.
