an Wine Regions Four hundred-fifty years ago Spanish settlers found to be a winemaker s paradise. This long, thin country has diverse geography: the Atacma Desert, the Andes Mountains, the Pacific Ocean and Antartica. In the centre, more than 112,00 hectares of high-quality wine grapes benefit from sunny days, cool nights, a Mediterranean climate, diverse soil types and talented winemakers: everything needed to produce a wide range of excellent wines. The traditional home of an wine is the large expanse of fertile flatland in the centre of the country known as the Central Valley, where grapes grow well and ripen easily. Today s search for terroir has led winemakers to experiment with new varieties and seek out new and generally cooler places to plant them. Central Valley growers climb into the Andean foothills, and others move west toward the Pacific, north to the semi-arid mountainous regions and southward to the country s austral agricultural extremes. The result is greater diversity and a large selection of exciting wines from. [email protected]

9th September 2009 Wines of the natural choice... Welcome to the Royal Horticultural Halls. The Nielsen data charts on the following page graphically illustrate the substantial progress is making in all sectors of the competitive UK wine market and it is especially pleasing to see the growth of s premium wines retailing at over 5. The amazing diversity of s wines stems from the extraordinary geography and unique climate that this country possesses. Natural growing conditions create increasing opportunities to grow grapes organically, but the emphasis is now on how can embrace sustainability, in all its forms, effectively and responsibly. It is a major objective for to lead this particular field and many wineries are making strong progress. With regionality the key to s stylistic development, winemakers are striving to reflect the different terroirs that the country can offer, especially in the cooler, coastal areas and those in the Andes foothills, but keep a watch out too for exciting styles coming from traditional regions. The Focus Tasting area highlights a selection of wines in three categories: Trophy and Gold medal winners from the major 2009 wine competitions Pinot Noir Organic, Biodynamic, and Fairtrade certified wines Experience why must be the natural choice... 5 The 2009 vintage in Overview: Total production of wine with a D.O. in 2009 was 8,593,609 hectolitres a 24% increase on the 2008 harvest. A mild spring with no major incidences of frost and warm, dry conditions during summer and autumn resulted in a generous crop for in 2009, especially in the central and southern regions. There was little or no rainfall during the spring and summer seasons and higher than average temperatures during the ripening period tempered by cool nights. The lack of water did not affect most wine regions with the exception of some areas of the Maule. However, the conditions made carefully controlled irrigation and good canopy management even more important to achieve good fruit quality. White varieties were harvested at the usual time (mid February onwards). Grapes were healthy, though bunches were larger and heavier than usual resulting in higher yields, especially for Sauvignon Blanc. Favourable warm, dry weather with some very hot weather meant that the harvest for red grapes was extended. Sometimes growers opted to pick early to maintain freshness or, for later-ripening varieties such as Carmenère, conditions allowed growers to wait for grapes to reach optimum ripeness. Most red varieties were harvested somewhat later than in Grapes were generally harvested in good condition across all regions with the exception of some outbreaks of botrytis at the very end of the harvest and there are some reports of unwelcome visits from red mite spiders. s viticulturalists also worked hard and successfully to keep the lobestia botrana grape moth at bay this year. Region by region: Elqui Valley There were no adverse climatic conditions during the growing season in northern Elqui which benefits from over 300 days of annual sunshine. Quality is reported to be good across all grape varieties and yields were moderate. Syrah and Carmenère are strong performers this year as well as Sauvignon Blanc from vineyards benefiting from a coastal influence. The increasingly wide choice of contemporary wines from Elqui includes dry, aromatic Pedro Ximénez wines. This traditional grape for the area is now one of the first varieties to be picked at vintage time to achieve a refreshing style. Limarí Valley In Limarí a warm spring, free of rain and frost, advanced the crop. A good vintage for whites especially Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, and red varieties ripened well and show good balance thanks to the cooling maritime influence, especially Syrah. Marcelo Retamal, winemaker for De Martino, describes Chardonnay from Quebrada Seca as outstanding. Sauvignon Blanc volume is up by 10%; Viognier and Merlot by 15%. Aconcagua Valley Aconcagua experienced a dry, hot summer similar to most other regions. Merlot picked in mid March ahead of higher temperatures shows good fruit intensity and colour. Cabernet Sauvignon is also good from well managed vineyards, and Syrah where yields were kept in check. Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Carmenère stand out. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines from cool-climate Aconcagua Costa coastal region show great promise.

Maipo Valley Ample winter rains left Maipo well placed during the key ripening period and the harvest was rain-free. Small areas of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards suffered from excessive heat exposure but less than in Better fruit quality was achieved by advancing harvesting dates and irrigation was an important factor. Carmenère and Syrah performed best in Maipo Central. The same varieties and Cabernet Sauvignon stand out in higher altitude Maipo Alto. Casablanca Valley Unusually, frost was rare and of no major concern and the growing season started well in Casablanca after good flowering and fruit-set. Volumes are higher, especially for Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay (around 15-20% more than an average year). Average temperatures were lower during the growing season compared to resulting in a longer ripening period. However, the smaller temperature variation day-night impacted on freshness and flavour concentration for whites in general. A good year for Chardonnay from cooler sites and a particularly good vintage for Pinot Noir and Syrah. The best Sauvignon Blanc wines are likely to come from vineyards where yields were restrained. San Antonio Valley including Leyda Conditions favoured long, slow ripening and grapes showed good concentration as well as a good balance between acidity and ph. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir performed well in terms of both quality and quantity and Syrah also stands out. Cachapoal Valley The season was largely unproblematic. Despite high summer temperatures, the vines performed well and rain-free conditions resulted in a good crop. In some cases harvest dates for Merlot and Cabernet were brought forward to avoid dehydration. Syrah and Cabernet Franc stand out for colour, aroma and tannin and a good year for Viognier too. Colchagua Valley There were some incidences of dehydration in Merlot, Cabernet and Carmenère varieties. Good overall condition of the crop and slightly lower volumes than anticipated. Low acidity but good aromatic quality for whites; reds show soft and ripe tannins for most varieties and Carmenère excels. Good weather allowed us to have longer hang times and full ripeness in the grapes. We have seen a dramatic increase in the quality level of Malbec Aurelio Montes. Curicó Valley Excellent climatic conditions bring out the best in reds wines are concentrated with fine ripe fruit character. No spring frosts and no morning mists during the harvest resulted in healthy grapes with good acidity across the board. Very good aromatic Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blanc best from cooler areas, expressive Gewürztraminer, good Cabernet Sauvignon, even better Syrah and Malbec is reported to be excellent. Maule Valley Spring frosts resulted in some loss to the Chardonnay crop in the Cauquenes area closer to the coast and the same area was particularly susceptible to drought this year especially vineyards without irrigation. The crop was healthy with low levels of acidity and medium-high ph levels. Red wines show good colour and fine tannins. Musts are particularly concentrated and alcohol levels are slightly higher due to the dry conditions. Syrah performed well, Carmenère even better.

Bío Bío and Malleco Valleys Annual rainfall was significantly lower than average in these southernmost wine regions causing water shortages over the summer months and into early autumn. Harvest dates were up to two weeks early and this was related to water issues rather than heat temperatures were moderate. Pinot Noir wines show good colour and fruit profile and Chardonnay wines have attractive honey aromas. Riesling also shows good aromatic intensity. Report compiled by: Patricia Langton

Justerini & Brooks 12, Brick Street London W1J 7ET Tel: Fax: Website: [email protected] Contact: David Brown The award-winning Loma Larga, the Spanish name for Long Hill, is a boutique estate in maritime-influenced Casablanca Valley of. Owners, the Diaz Family, spent 10 years researching the production of top quality wines from Casablanca before embarking on this project. A careful study of their vineyards has revealed the most prime plots on this 700 hectare estate. Only 40 of the 148 hectares planted in hills and piedmont are for Loma Larga wines. The yields are kept low to allow grape maturity, vital in this cool zone where the pacific breezes force extreme variations in day/night temperatures, which together with the poor soils of their hillside vineyards result in intense cool climate style wines that are fermented in 5,000 litre tanks and with the exception of Sauvignon Blanc are aged in French oak barriques. 1. Sunny days and night breezes create the temperature variability needed to reach optimal ripeness of colour and structure of the grapes. A pioneer in hillside-vineyard planting, our Paidahuen estate offers the rocky soil and unique solar exposure necessary to obtain grapes rich in structure and character. The riverbanks present soil of fluvial origin, consisting of fragments of drift stones from the Andes. The sandy texture of the soil restricts water retention, favouring the concentration of aromas and tannins in the grapes The total vineyard area is 120 hectares, including: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenère, Syrah, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Mourvèdre, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. They had the belief that the Maule Valley held huge potential for the cultivation of high quality grapes for wine production. In 1940, the company was bought by Victor Henríquez Solar - a well-established grape grower and a man very much at home on the land. Nowadays, his sons, Arturo and Manuel, are working to establish Viña El Aromo as one of the most respected wine suppliers in. More recent developments in modern technology and viticultural practices have helped El Aromo harness their potential and create high quality wines for the market. Efforts to reduce yields and increase ripeness have resulted in stunning new releases at all price levels giving the perfect balance of quality, price and volume. From the outset the aim was to produce the very best wines while working with nature: in 2004 all 90 planted hectares were certified organic by BCS, and since then the vineyards and winery have progressed to biodynamic practices. The EQ label stands for equilibrium and seeks to highlight the balance this approach to the environment achieves. With a strong costal influence in the vineyards the range of wines show an obvious theme of freshness throughout them. The epitome of this is the Syrahs, which have won countless trophies and awards, proving Matetic to be s leader with this grape variety. 1.
