2 January 2014 The Career Development Center is pleased to present Career Destinations Saint Joseph s University Class of 2013, our annual report of the postgraduate activities of this year s graduates. Data contained in the report was obtained through a Career Development Center survey of January, May and September graduates of Undergraduate Day, Professional and Liberal Studies and Graduate divisions of the university. Each graduate was contacted by between one and three times from July 2013 through September Graduates who did not respond via were then contacted by the Saint Joseph s University Survey Research Center; these surveys were completed via telephone. 3 CAREER DESTINATIONS SAINT JOSEPH S UNIVERSITY CLASS OF 2013 Compiled by the Career Development Center January 2014 THE 2013 UNDERGRADUATE DAY REPORT Information is based on 646 respondents: 86.9% of the graduating class for whom the University had accurate contact information, 68.9% of total graduates. 93.5% of the respondents are employed, serving in full-time volunteer programs or in the military, and/or pursuing additional education. Saint Joseph s University Class of 2013 includes recipients of some of the world s most competitive and prestigious global service programs; among them: acceptance into the Peace Corps, Teach for America, and the Teaching Assistant Program in France. Service continues to attract SJU graduates in increasing numbers. Among the class of 2013, thirty-three graduates have committed to full-time volunteer and service programs, such as Alliance for Catholic Education, AmeriCorps, City Year, Jesuit Volunteer Corps, the Peace Corps and Teach for America, while two graduates are serving in the United States Air Force and in the United States Marine Corps, respectively. The average total starting salary for the class of 2013 was $48,400, with an average base salary of $44,100 and an average bonus of $4,300. The average total starting salary for the class of 2012 was $46,800. Graduates who found their jobs through the Career Development Center s oncampus interviewing program had an average total salary of $54,300 (average base salary of $52,300; average bonus of $2,000). Graduates who started looking for a job prior to graduation and who utilized the services of the Career Development Center in their search had an average total salary of $49,100 (average base salary of $44,800; average bonus of $4,300), up from an average total salary of $47,200 in Graduates who reported that they began looking for a job after graduation had an average total salary of $44,300 (average base salary of $41,300; average bonus of $3,000), up from an average total salary of $39,400 in % of graduates reported having participated in at least one semester-long experiential education program; such programs include internships, cooperative education, part-time jobs resulting in the acquisition of transferable skills, service-based commitments and study abroad. Graduates who reported having completed at least one experiential educational opportunity prior to graduation had an average total salary of $48,600. Graduates who had no internship experience had an average total salary of $43,800. 2

7 Saint Joseph s University On-Campus Recruiting Program The On-Campus Recruiting Program at Saint Joseph s University utilizes SJUcareers, an online system, to connect students with employers. As shown in the table below, the program has experienced steady growth over the past five academic years. 9 Fellowship, Scholarship and Grant Information Class of 2013 With the assistance of the Saint Joseph s University Office of Fellowships, the Class of 2013 includes recipients of some of the world s most competitive and prestigious academic awards; among them: acceptance into the Peace Corps, Teach for America, and the Teaching Assistant Program in France, sponsored by the French Ministry of Education and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. Graduates of the class of 2013 who went on to graduate study and who were awarded scholarship or grant funding received an average of $13,600. Awards ranged from $2,000 to $100,000, with many graduates receiving grants for full tuition with room and board included. Nearly half of the graduates enrolled in continuing education were awarded some type of funding for graduate study, with awards totaling over $300,000. Of those not currently continuing their education, 262 graduates reported future plans for academic study. 63% indicated they planned to continue their education within 1-2 years, 29% within 3-4 years and 8% in 5 or more years. THE 2013 PROFESSIONAL AND LIBERAL STUDIES REPORT The following includes highlights from the survey of 2013 Professional and Liberal Studies graduates. Information is based on 53 respondents: 90.6% of the graduating class for whom the University had accurate contact information, 39.6% of total graduates. 11 Continuing Education Activity for the Professional and Liberal Studies Class of 2013 Nine percent of the Professional and Liberal Studies class of 2013 has chosen to further their education by attending graduate school on a full-time basis. Graduates will pursue master s degrees in such areas as Education, Physical/Life Sciences and Social Science. Plans to Continue Education In 5 or more years 6% Within 3-4 years 8% Within 0-2 years 69% No plans to continue 17% Eighty-three percent of respondents indicated they had plans to continue their education in the future. In addition, 15% of those who indicated they were employed are also continuing their education on a full- or part-time basis. 10
12 THE 2013 MASTER S AND DOCTORAL DEGREE PROGRAMS REPORT The following includes highlights from the survey of 2013 graduates of Saint Joseph s University master s and doctoral degree programs. Information is based on 332 respondents: 61.8% of the graduating class for whom the University had accurate contact information, 28.7% of total graduates. 95% of the respondents are employed and/or pursuing additional education. Those seeking employment totaled 5%. The average total salary for master s and doctoral degree program graduates of 2013 was $67,000 (average base salary of $61,900; average bonus of $8,300). Average total salary for 2012 master s and doctoral degree program graduates was $64,600. The average salary for graduates of Graduate Business programs was $81,700 (average base salary of $73,400; average bonus of $8,300). For graduates of Graduate Arts & Science programs, the average total salary was $58,000 (average base salary of $54,100; average bonus of $3,900).
